J. L. Moore, 88, Walnut Lane, Richmond, IN, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 in Richmond, IN.
Born January 2, 1914 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Minnie Pearl Lay Moore.
He was a retired Gibson Greeting Cards salesman in Hamilton, NY, a member of the Hamilton Baptist Church, a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University Richmond Teachers College and a member of the Hamilton Rotary Club.
Survivors include: his wife, Lola B. Sims Moore, Richmond, IN; one son, Ronald (Kathy) Moore, Richmond, IN; one daughter, Ann (Richard) Wolf, Brewster, MA; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lyda Moore.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 28, in Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. James Harley officiating.
Grandchildren will be pallbearers.
Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
GEORGE PENIX
George W. Penix, 77, 215 South Depot Street, Burgin, died Saturday, September 21, 2002 at his residence.
Born December 9, 1924 in Burgin, he was the son of the late George Penix and Nannie Poe Penix.
He was a retired truck driver for The Brick Yard of Harrodsburg, a Past Master and member of the Silver Cord Lodge #23, Harrodsburg, St. John chapter Holy Royal Arch in Danville, Cyrene Commandary Knights of Temple #17, Danville, and KY Club of Danville. He was a long time member of the Little Zion Baptist Church in Burgin.
Survivors include: his wife, Willie B. Doneghy Penix, Burgin; four sons, Charles W. (John Etta) Penix, Burgin, William H. (Patricia) Penix, Harrodsburg, Michael A. Penix, Richmond, and George Lee (Mary) Penix, Harrodsburg; two daughters, Ann (Steve) Garvin, Louisville, and Vicki (Charles) Davis, Harrodsburg; one sister, Annell (Paul) Duerson, Louisville; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, George Penix, Jr.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 24, at the Little Zion Baptist Church with Bro. Phillip A. Yates, officiating. Burial was in the Robinson Roe Cemetery in Burgin.
Pallbearers were James Dunn, Greg Bowman, Roy Cochren, Kevin McKitrick, Larry Gayton and Alvin White. Honorary bearers were Brothers of Silver Cord Lodge #23 and James M. Peavler, Brent Peavler, James R. Payne, John “Skeeter” Reed, Philip Slaven and Cecil L. Bartleson.
Parks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
EDITH SHEWMAKER
Edith Shewmaker, 89, formerly of Cardinal Meadows, Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the North Hardin Health Rehab in Radcliffe.
Born August 17, 1913 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mamie Best Bottom. She was the widow of Fred Shewmaker.
She was a homemaker, attended Cornishville Baptist Church and Fellowship Baptist Church. She was active in the Mercer County Senior Citizens and Widow to Widow.
Survivors include: one daughter, Violet Cowden, Rineyville; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Freddy Wilson Shewmaker, one daughter, Wilma Shewmaker, three brothers, Albert “Casey” Bottom, Aaron Bottom and James Bottom, one sister, Virgie Votaw.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 21, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial was in the Peters Cemetery in Mackville.
Pallbearers were Gary Baker, LaRue Huffman, Richard Tingle, Alan Harlow, Tommy Adams and Tony Highbaugh.
JUDY WINE
Judy Faye Wine, 49, East Lane, Mercer County, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at her residence.
Born January 3, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Virginia Sayre West.
She was a former assembly line worker for Sylvania, a member of the Harrodsburg Church of God where she worked with King’s Kids.
She loved to play softball, was a former member of the Butch’s Girls of Willisburg Softball Team, and had been a member of Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church softball team.
Survivors include; her husband, Ronald Wine, Mercer County, two daughters, Amanda Jean Wine, Harrodsburg, Christy Best, Bardstown; one brother, Charlie West, Anderson County; one sister, Carol Waldridge, Lawrenceburg; three grandchildren, Jordan Ganns, Katie Froelicher and Bridgette Satterly.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 20, at the Harrodsburg Church of God with Rev. Glenn Daugherty and Rev. Bertha Brown officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mark Froelicher, Mark Adams, David Vinyard, Benny Williams, Weslie Williams, and Allen Best. Honorary bearers were Howard Carpenter, Jimmy Whitehouse, Larry Drury, Travis York, Larry Richards and Billy Nevius.
Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
ELIZABETH WRAY
Elizabeth Wray, 86, of Danville, died Monday, September 23, 2002 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born April 30, 1916 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Pearl Leonard Martin. She was the widow of William Wray.
She was a former nursing assistant for Kentucky State Hospital in Danville, was a Baptist and enjoyed cooking.
Survivors include: three daughters, Thelma White, Danville, Faye White, Harrodsburg, and Nancy Stamper, Danville; one sister, Ella Mae (Nooie) Long, Harrodsburg; 39 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, James Allen Wray, Billy Wray Jr. and Bennie Lee Wray, and one daughter, Alma White.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 26, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Charlie White officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mitch Long, Larry Long, Giles White Jr., Arnold White, Herbert White Jr., Mark Whittaker and Donnie West.
Visitation will be after 8:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
MILITARY RITES
Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post # 6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Military Rites for Cleo W. “Click” Baker at Spring Hill Cemetery on September 18, 2002.
Those attending were Chris Stine, Lucian Landers, Tommy Denny, Gene Couley, Zenah Teater III, Joe Harlow, Kyle Pankey, Howard H. Howells, Tom Rappleye and Jim Tewmey.
Representatives of the U. S. Army were SSG. Luis Rodriguez and Sgt. Dawn Fiegel.
Buglers were Jennifer Baker and Chad Ellis.
KELLY COLEMAN
Kelly Coleman, 31, of 420 Robin Street died Sunday, September 29, 2002.
Born November 21, 1970 in Xenia, OH, he was the son of Larry and Jennifer A. Stout Coleman of Junction City.
He worked in quality control for Florida Tile. He was a member of Berea Christian Church and was a little league baseball and football coach.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include: his wife, Amy Lea Coleman, Harrodsburg; two sons, Jordan Coleman and Austin Coleman; two daughters, Brittany and Alanna Coleman, all of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Brian Coleman, Danville, Josh Coleman, Lexington, and Aaron Coleman, Danville; two sisters, Stephanie Gaddis, Junction City, and Shashona Hawkins, Harrodsburg; his grandmother, Nancy Coleman, Dayton, OH.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 2, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with Gary Allen officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Josh Coleman, Brian Coleman, Aaron Coleman, Kevin Tyler, Johnny Ashburn, John Cooksey, David Bowlin and Tim Rogers.

RODGER GOODWIN
Rodger William Goodwin, 90, of Lexington, husband of Susie Etta Allen Goodwin, formerly of Mercer County, died Thursday, August 15, 2002 at Richmond Place.
He owned and operated Kentucky Ornamental Iron Company for over 25 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member and past elder of the Noble Road Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, OH, the Lions Club, Lexington Club, Spindletop Hall, Oleika Shrine Temple.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: two daughters, Deedie Goodwin (Daniel) Lutz, Lexington, and Sarah Goodwin (John) Lisco, Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 17, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Main Street, by Dr. Donald R. Herren. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery.
LELA GRAHAM
Lela Ray Graham, 90, of 325 Litsey Avenue, died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg.
Born May 29, 1912 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Bennie Earl and Paralee Durr Graham.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mayo Christian Church.
Survivors include: two brothers, Marshall Graham, Nicholasville, and Lyle Graham, Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Laverne Graham, Lima Graham, Vera Graham, Wanetta Royalty and Hallie Johnson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 2, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with Jerry Perry and Rex Graham officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
JESSE JAMES
Jesse James, 85, of 676 Cane Run, died Monday, September 30, 2002 at Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born October 24, 1916 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Chris and Ina Royalty James.
He had worked as a postal employee for the Harrodsburg Post Office, was a member of Bohon Church of Christ and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.
Survivors include: his wife, Lula Mae Terhune James, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Rita (Jim) McGlone, Harrodsburg; two sons, Connie (Christine) James, Grand Rapids, MI; Terry (Elisa) James, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Don Chase officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Wayne Peavler, Jackie Springate, Billy Grider, Carlos Lester, Orbon Mayes, Marvin Robinson and John David Lane. WILMA JAMES
Wilma Helen James, 89, of 361 College Manor, died Sunday, September 29, 2002, at her residence.
Born August 19, 1913 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lula Brown James.
She was a retired teacher for the Mercer County School System and a member of Bohon Church of Christ. She was a former secretary and treasurer of Mercer County Retired Teachers Association and Hopewell Homemakers Club.
Survivors include: one brother, Henry L. James, Harrodsburg.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 1, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Kenneth Preston officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Carroll Burton, Paul Preston, Jimmie Dean, Doug Hendrix, Jackie Springate, Lee Dean, Allen Whitenack and Jerry Burns.
