John Smith Alexander, 69, of Lexington and Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003 in St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
A native of Harrodsburg, he was the son of Gladys Davenport Alexander and the late James M. Alexander.
He had been a horse show photographer, having photographed American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking Horses, hackney and road horses throughout the region, and Standardbred horses on the race track. He was a former writer and editor for the Lexington Herald-Leader.
He was a member of the Mercer County Fair Board, a vice president of the Kentucky Walking Horse Association, a board member and past president of the Ohio Valley Walking Horse Association and a member of the Lexington Lions Club. He was a Mason and a Shriner.
He had served as pastor of Camp Nelson Presbyterian Church, Nicholasville, for 45 years. He had been associated with the Sweet 16 Boys High School Basketball Tournament and helped to start the All-A State High School Basketball Tournament.
He was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School and the University of Kentucky and did graduate work at the Lexington Theological Seminary.
Survivors include: his wife, Sue Alexander, Lexington; one daughter, Rebecca (Dale) Sweet, Lexington; one son, John (Christina) Napier, Lexington; two brothers, Andrew Alexander and Dr. James G. Alexander, both of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren, Dillon Sweet and Bethany and Jack Napier, all of Lexington.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 28, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home.

DANNY BAST
Danny Bast, 49, Bondville Road, Salvisa, died Sunday February 23, 2003 at his residence.
Born June 9, 1953 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late William Jennings Bryan and Bessie Opal Smith Bast.
He was a construction worker and a veteran of the U. S. Army.
He was a Methodist and liked to fish and collect arrowheads.
Survivors include: one son, Eric Daniel Bast, Harrodsburg; four brothers, Roy Bast and Donnie Bast, both of Harrodsburg, Connie Bast, Frankfort, and Tony Bast, Salvisa; three sisters, Betty Olszanski, Temple, CA, Anita Bottoms and Judy Hurst, both of Harrodsburg; and one granddaughter Makayla Ann Barker, Lexington. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Patterson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 26, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bryan Hurst, Donovan Bast, Larry Merriman, Scott Hurst, Brad Hurst and Anthony Bast. Honorary bearers were Tony Bast and Eddie Bast.
BRUCE BOTTOMS
Robert Bruce Bottoms, 61, of Texas Road, Springfield, died Wednesday, February 19, 2002 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born June 3, 1941 in LaPorte, IN, he was the son of Alma B. Ryan Bottoms of Harrodsburg and the late Albert “Casey” Bottoms.
He was a graduate of Campbellsville College and received his master’s degree and Rank I certification from Georgetown College.
He was retired from the Scott County school system, having coached girls basketball and other sports, and had been named coach of the year several times. He was a member of Mackville Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday School teacher at Gano Avenue Baptist Church in Georgetown.
He was a member of Magnolia Masonic Lodge 201 in Mackville.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Ella Rose Deringer Bottoms, Springfield; one son, Donald Bottoms, Georgetown; two daughters, Rebecca Bottoms Hall, Georgetown and Roberta Bottoms of Lexington; two brothers, Glen Bottoms, Frankfort, and Donald Bottoms, Groveport, OH; one sister, Linda B. Riney, Harrodsburg, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with David Gifford, Mark Stewart and Sherman Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery, Mackville.
Pallbearers were Mark Wilkerson, Robert and Bill Deringer, John Logue, Vince Sams, Steve Bottoms, Allen Harlow and Jeff Hamblin.

BESSIE HARRISON
Bessie Harrison, 86, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Danville.
Born June 13, 1917 in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Eunice Nokes Anderson. She was the widow of Bennie Harrison.
She had worked in the kitchen at Shakertown, attended Herrington Lake Pentecostal Church, loved to dance, quilt, and embroider.
Survivors include: two daughters, Myrtle Jean Cutter and Betty Jane Johnson, both of Danville; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held. Sunday, February 23, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Steve VanHook officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were great-grandsons, Jeffrey Cutter, Bobby Cutter, Dewayne Wright, Johnny Lee Johnson, Matthew Louallen and Jim Lopez. Honorary bearers were great-great-grandsons, Damyan Young, Josh Johnson, B. J. Johnson, Shae Anderson, Nicholas Anderson, Adam Shumate, Tyler Reynolds and Justin Shumate.
IRENE HORN
Irene M. Horn, 86, of 901 Mackville Road, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born November 27, 1916 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Minnie Kurtz Vaught. She was the widow of Bush Horn.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 24 years and was a member of the Willing Workers.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 40 years, was a past president of the WMU, and a lifetime member of the Mercer Extension Homemakers.
She was a former member of the North Mercer Concerned Citizens, Town and Country homemaker and an avid quilter.
Survivors include: two daughters, Nancy Jean Fluhr, Louisville, and Glendon Rose Followell, Harrodsburg; one step son, Maurice Allen Horn, Campbellsville; one step daughter, Virginia Ann Chumbley, Mercer County; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Hobert Reynolds, Don Reed and Greg Humpert officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the chapel from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and after 7:30 a.m. Friday. An Eastern Star service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Byron Followell, Brice Followell, Michael Wolchik, Mark Wolchik, Leroy Burns and Rodney Thompson. Honorary bearers will be Willie B. Horn, Chester Scott, Morris Yocum, Kermit Logue, Raymond Watts, Larry Lowe, Jim Newby, Shelby Tyler, Richard Smith and Connie Chumbley.
PAMELA MAGNUS
Pamela Gayle Magnus, 64, of Louisville, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at her residence.
The former Pamela Bonta, she was a native of Mercer County.
She was an employee of Churchill Downs and a member of Hot Springs, AR, Showman’s Club, Jefferson County, FOP Lodge #14, and a member of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Churchill Downs VFW Post #2921, AFL-CIO Local 181 and the Okolona Democratic Club.
Survivors include: one brother, Charles W. Bonta, III, two half-sisters, Marlene Erickson Nicholasville, and Debbie Shearer, Danville.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 21, at Arch L. Heady and Son-Okolona, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
RUTH MARTIN
Ruth Fleckinstein Martin, 87, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, February 24,2003 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born in Weebo, ND, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Eliza McClanahan Fleckinstein.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: her husband, Jess Martin, Harrodsburg, two daughters, Judy Sanborn, Georgetown and Louise (Earl) Prewitt, Harrodsburg; one son, John Thomas (Sandra) Parrish, Lawrenceburg; one sister, Angie Wagoner, Paris; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 27, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington. Burial will be in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Charles Fleckinstein, Ricky Fleckinstein, Tommy Parrish, Blaine Sanborn, Robert Cowan, Tolly Henry and Mark Henry.

NETTIE ROACH
Nettie Frances Roach, 90, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, February 21, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born November 21, 1912 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Bailey and Naomi Bast Roach.
She was retired from Palm Beach in Danville and a member of the Mayo Christian Church.
Survivors include: her sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Christine) Trimble, Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Eugene Roach and Vernon Roach.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 23, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Matthew Atha officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ken McCoun, Bill Releford, Stephen Trimble, Mike Sheperson, Bill Robinson and Wendell Johnson.

Wayne G. Taylor, 45, of 599 Greenwood Drive, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at his residence.
Born March 11, 1957 in Norfolk, England, he was the son of Shirley Moss Taylor and the late Owen W. Taylor.
He was the former owner and operator of Barr’s Food Mart in Harrodsburg and was in retail management.
Survivors include: his mother, Shirley Taylor, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Loren Taylor, Georgetown, three sisters, Belinda Houston, Connersville, IN, Sharon Blankenship, Harrodsburg, and Melanie Taylor, Lexington.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Sam Stow and Brackie Willoughby officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
