Former Football Star Found Dead In Pool
A well-known athlete from Harrodsburg died early Tuesday morning at the University of Kentucky Medical Center after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool in a Lexington apartment complex.
Venus O. Meaux Jr., 43, was found at about 1:15 a.m. by Lexington police in the pool at Cedar Run apartments on Loch Ness Drive.
The death is being investigated by the Fayette County Coroner’s office. The cause of death will not be determined until the coroner’s office receives toxicology and autopsy reports from the state, according to Fayette County Deputy coroner Larry Owens. Those results could take as long as two to three months. Meaux, son of Ruby Mae Shy Meaux of Harrodsburg and the late Venus O. Meaux Sr., was a 1977 graduate of Harrodsburg High School where he was well-known for athletics in football, basketball and track. Meaux went to UK and played football under UK Head Coach Fran Curci. He was a defensive cornerback.
Meaux was coached at Harrodsburg by Alvis Johnson, David Feeback and Genie Sims.
“Athletically, Venus had two sides,” said Sims. “off the field he was a gentlemen, a friend and always had a smile. On the field, Venus was probably the hardest hitter I’ve ever seen play football. He would hit you with every ounce of his body. You knew when you’d been hit by Venus.
“He was probably one of the fastest players we’ve ever had,” said Sims, adding that there have been several fast athletes at HHS, but Meaux stood out for his sheer speed. Sims said Meaux speed was never really checked, because the athlete “only went as fast as he had to go.”
“He was a real dynamic kind of guy.”
The funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Harrodsburg Baptist Church,. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
In addition to his mother, Meaux is survived by two sons, Earl Matthew Sims of Burgin, and Maurel Duncan of Louisville, and a daughter, Venus Griffin of Lexington.
