Raymond Earl Cates, 84, went to be with the Lord, Friday, June 10, 2005, with his family by his side, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Rockport, Ky. April 27, 1921, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Central City and was retired from Ken underground coalmines. He was a Veteran of World War II, served with Battery C 979 Field Artillery Battalion with battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Among his decorations and citations were the EAME Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars, Good conduct ribbon, The Purple Heart (wounded in Germany Sept. 27, 1944) and a Bronze Star Metal. He enjoyed quail hunting, bird dogs, gardening, Atlanta Braves baseball and The University of Kentucky basketball. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Jessie and Harvey (Nick) Easton and his father and stepmother, Smith and Mary Cates.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Annie Jenkins Cates; a daughter, Becky (Richard) Holtzclaw of Central City; three sons, Lynn (Cindy) Cates and Mike (Regina) Cates, all of Central City and Jackie (Jeanie) Cates of Carrolton, Ky.; six grandchildren; four great - grandchildren and two step - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 13 at Tucker Funeral Home with Roger Skipworth officiating and assisted by Earnest Bean Jr. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Marion Ann St. Pierre Cyr
GREENVILLE - Marion Ann St. Pierre Cyr, 71, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Limestone, Maine May 2, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Otis Alfred St. Pierre and Anna Cyr St. Pierre. She was a member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Depoy. She was a filing clerk for the Muhlenberg County Clerk’s Office and secretary for the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Probation Muhlenberg County. She was preceded in death by her son, Albert Cyr in 1991 and a granddaughter, Alysha Danielle Drury in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Craig) Kirtley of Owensboro and Lorrilee (Freddie) Drury of Graham; two sons, Robert Cyr of Greenville and Jeff Cyr of Henderson, Ky.; four sisters, Jeannette Weidner of Jacksonville, Fla., Annette Bloomer of San Antonio, Texas, Joan Cyr of Pembroke, Mass. and Margaret Griffeth of Limestone, Maine; four grandchildren, Adrienne Snyder, Jeremy Cyr, Chastity Cyr and Tahnee Cyr and a great - grandson, Camron Snyder.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 9 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Drury officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Depoy.
J. Rogers Badgett, Sr.
MADISONVILLE - J. Rogers Badgett, Sr., 87, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pettus, Arkansas July 27, 1917, he was the son of the late Russell and Mary Rheaetta Rogers Badgett, Sr. He graduated from Messick High School in Memphis Tenn., attended the University of Tennessee and was a member of the Buntyn Presbyterian Church in Memphis. He moved to Madisonville in 1938; he owned and operated Badgett Construction Company, performing various construction jobs in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Nebraska, Illinois, Kentucky and Georgia. In 1943 Badgett Mine Stripping Corporation began mining bauxite in Missouri for our nation’s war effort. In 1944 Badgett Mine Stripping Corporation began strip - mining coal in Kentucky and continued in the strip mining business in Hopkins and Muhlenberg Counties until 1976. He was widely known for the “Badgett Big Walk” in 1955, moving a 650 - ton dragline and a 250 - ton dragline across land and waterways from Earlington, Kentucky to the St. Lawrence Seaway in New York for a dredging project on the seaway. He was also involved with highway and bridge construction on the Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida (Alligator Alley) Turnpikes and in Kuwait. He was a partner in port dredging in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and was also involved in oil and gas exploration locally and in Texas and Louisiana. Mr. Badgett leased and operated the Madisonville Municipal Airport for over 30 years and was a Limited Partner of the Boston Red Sox Baseball Team for eight years. For many years he owned Cadiz Motor Company, a Ford dealership in Kentucky. He was an Eagle Scout having joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1933 and in 1991 he received a “Distinguished Eagle Scout” award, the second time this award was presented in the state of Kentucky. Other recognitions include Badgett Center for Educational Enhancement, Badgett Athletic Complex, Madisonville Community College, Madisonville - North Hopkins “Hall of Fame”, Lions Club “Man of the Year” and Western Kentucky Coal Producers “Coal Miner of the Year”. Rogers was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Smith Badgett in 1972.
Survivors include his wife, Whayne Ann Crick Badgett; a son, Rogers (Candace) Badgett, Jr. of Fairfield, Iowa; a sister, Julia B. Badger of Grand Rivers, Ky.; two brothers, Russell Badgett, Jr. and Brown Badgett, Sr., both of Madisonville and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. June 9 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel.

Barbara N. Steele
VERO BEACH, FLA. - Barbara N. Steele, 70, died Wed., June 8, 2005 at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla.
Born in Beech Creek Nov. 25, 1934, she was a former employee of Steele’s Hunting and Camping Supply and owned and operated Ace Masonry. She was preceded in death by her son, James G. “Jimmy” Steele.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Carl Steele; four daughters, Pamela S. Canady, Susie S. Gay, Diane S. Blais and Katherine S. Hamilton, all of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Emma Doris Stacey of Beech Creek; five grandsons; a granddaughter; a great - grandson and a niece.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 13 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Rice officiating. Burial followed at Jackson Cemetery (Leigh’s Chapel).

Kathy Elaine Cottoner
EARLINGTON - Kathy Elaine Cottoner, 49, died Saturday, June 4, 2005 at her residence.
Born in Tampa, Fla. March 26, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Ben Dukes and Molly Garrett Dukes, she worked as a cook for several restaurants in the area and her most recent employer was Denny’s Restaurant in Madisonville.
Survivors include her husband, Carlton Wayne Cottoner; three brothers, Tony Dukes and Larry Dukes, both of Earlington and Johnny Dukes of Graham and a sister, Debbie Cissna of Earlington.
There were no public services. Elliott Mortuary in Madisonville was in charge of the arrangements.
Ola Clardy O’Neal
GREENVILLE - Ola Clardy O’Neal, 93, died Sunday, June 12, 2005 in The River Bend Retirement Community in Kuttawa, Ky. after several months of illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Feb. 28, 1912, she was the daughter of William Judson Clardy and Monie Belle Robinson Clardy and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Greenville since 1937, a member for 68 years. She retired from General Electric in Owensboro in 1973 after 29 years of employment. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Columbus (J.C.) O’Neal in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna Joe (Cooper) Frederick of Grand Rivers, Ky.; two sisters, Floella Clardy and Lanella Carver, both of Greenville; two grandsons, Kevin (Alice) Frederick of Possum Trot, Ky. and Scott (Jackie) Frederick of Crown Pointe, Ind.; two step - grandchildren, Bobby Neuman of Barstow, Calif. and Debbie Neuman of Conn.; four great - grandchildren, Senchal, Brian, Tyler and Paige and two step - great - grandchildren, Lucas and J.J.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. June 14 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. E.W. Greenwalt officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery in Greenville.
Mary Ruth Bryant
Mary Ruth Bryant, 70, died Monday, June 13, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Butler County Dec. 13, 1934, she was a homemaker and a member of Forest Oak Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Winford Bryant of Greenville; a sister, Betty Cain of Belton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in Union Chapel Cemetery in Browder.
Visitation will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. June 14 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home.
David M. Bowling
MANITOWOC, WIS. – David M. Bowling, 49, died Friday, April 14, 2006 due to a massive heart attack.
Born in Montgomery, Ala., July 5, 1956, his survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bowling Sr.; two brothers, James M. Bowling, his twin and John L. Bowling Jr.; two sisters, Susan Ann Gunderson and Tammy Ann Fuller; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. April 17 in Manitowoc, Wis. His remains are buried between his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bowling, in New Cypress Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Timothy Wade Spears
POWDERLY – Timothy Wade Spears, 48, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Aug. 5, 1957, he was a sheet rock worker and a member of Mercer Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Rice Spears; a son, Anthony Spears of Powderly; his mother, Madge Spears of Powderly; two brothers, Terry Spears of Greenville and Ronnie Spears of Taylorsville, Ky.; five sisters, Glyna Wice of White Plains, Diane Randolph, Peggy Ford and Connie Bryan, all of Greenville and Sandra Hatcher of Knoxville and a granddaughter.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. June 8 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly with the Rev. Wayne Rice officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Louise Wright Brown
ELIZABETHTOWN – Ruby Louise Wright Brown, 82, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 8, 1923, she was a housekeeper at Hardin Memorial Hospital and volunteer at the hospital for 20 years after she retired. A member of Woodson Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Brown.
Survivors include two daughters, Myrna (Charles “Danny”) Lile of Elizabethtown and Virginia “Kitty” (Ronnie) Burden of Bremen; two brothers, Frank Wright of Owensboro and Bobby Wright of Highland, Ind.; a sister, Inez Gossett of Madisonville; eight grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; three great - great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 9 at New Cypress Baptist Church in Greenville with the Rev. Tommy Drury officiating. Burial followed at New Cypress Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Frank Phipps
KIRKMANSVILLE – Frank Phipps, 73, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, Feb. 15, 1933, he worked at Texaco Servicecenter in Elkton for 19 years and North Main Phillips 66 in Hopkinsville for 16 years. He was an ordained minister and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. He was also a member of The Gospel Stings and The Butler Road Pickers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ruth O’Neal Phipps and a daughter, Brenda Sue Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Ardell Powell Phipps; four sons, John Ray, Terry and Darrell Jones, all of Kirkmansville and Ronald Jones of Greenville; 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. June 9 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Tommy Wilhite officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
Gertrude Edwards
MADISONVILLE – Gertrude Edwards, 76, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Regional Medical Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 6, 1930, she was a homemaker and member of Rowland Memorial Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Sanford and Ethel Jessup Sanford; a sister, Mary Ruth Nelson and a son, Wayne Edwards.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, C.L. Edwards; two daughters, Lisa Clayton of Hanson and Fay Metcalfe of Eddyville; a son, Anthony Edwards of Hanson; nine grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.

Zelma Jane Hensley Douthit
GREENVILLE – Zelma Jane Hensley Douthit, 90, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Maple Manor Healthcare in Greenville following several months illness.
Born in Pope County, Ark., May 14, 1916, she was the daughter of Hugh H. Hensley and Minnie Lee Stokes Hensley. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Benjamin Douthit in 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Doreene (Charles) Polk of Greenville and Frances (Richard) Bugg of Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Miller of Chiloquin, Ore.; six grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren and four great - great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 10 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Mooneyhan officiating. Burial followed at Vernal Grove Cemetery in Depoy. Memorial contributions may be made in the form of donations to the Relay for Life Roland Memorial Team.
Dick Garris
GREENVILLE – Dick Garris, 78, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Maple Manor Healthcare after a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 4, 1927, he was the son of Will Garris and Belle Williams Garris and of the Baptist faith. He was a U.M.W.A. coal miner and retired in 1983 from AYR Gem Coal Mines. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey Wilcox Garris.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Joyce Dean Lee Garris; a son, Richard Jason Garris of Greenville; two step - daughters, Teresa Moore of Bremen and Jackie Bean of Slaughters; a sister, Lexie Faulk of Greenville; a brother, W.G. Garris of Greenville and three step grandchildren.
