Central City - Mr. Edward Ray “Buck” Steward, 71, of Central City died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems in Owensboro.
Mr. Steward was born in Muhlenberg County on March 20, 1931. He was a welder for Elcon in Island.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy McElvain Steward; three sons, Charles Steward and John Steward both of Le Grange and Scotty Steward of Central City; five daughters, Tammy Baxter of Central City and Joannie Mitchell, Jeanie, Mary and Nancy all of Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Hobgood of Central City and Clara Meeks of Sacramento.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Archie Everette “Big Bird” Lee
Greenville - Mr. Archie Everette “Big Bird” Lee, 48, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Mr. Lee was born in Hopkins County on July 12, 1954. He was a coal miner and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Depoy.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra White Lee of Greenville; two daughters, Michelle Noe and Laura Howard, both of Greenville; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; his mother, Marcie Lee of Greenville; three brothers, Lawrence Lee, Jerry Lee and Kenneth Lee, all of Greenville; two sisters, Belinda Mason of Tennessee and Melanie Vincent ofGraham; and his grandmother, Stella Haithcoat of Tennessee.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 18, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Depoy.
Bennie Reese Henderson
Elkton - Mr. Bennie Reese Henderson, 91, of Elkton, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at his residence of natural causes.
Mr. Henderson was born in Todd County on February 2, 1911 to the late Robert and Ucebra Tucker Henderson. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta Henderson of Elkton; five daughters, Sylvia Gardner of Nashville, Tenn., Evelyn Williams of Flouresent, MO, Patricia Hall, Sibyl Francies and Karen Henderson all of Elkton; one sister, Alta Martin of Elkton; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with Reverend Gary Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
William S. Whitaker
Todd County - Mr. William Sherman Whitaker, 91, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Whitaker was born in Todd County on October 17, 1910 and lived in the New Harmony Community in Todd County. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans #45 in Russellville since 1948. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #0029 in Russellville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Onie Lee Blake and only child, Betty Joyce Whitaker Skipworth.
Survivors include his seven grandchildren, Rev. William Ray (Bill) Skipworth of Lewisburg, Eddie Skipworth of Elkton, Ricky Skipworth of Elkton, Gene Thomas Skipworth of Greenville, Edith Sweeney of Greenville, Deborah Shelton of Greenville and Elaine Walker of Greenville; two brothers, J.T. Whitaker of Doniphan, Missouri and Melvin Whitaker of Newburgh, Ind.; two sisters, Magdline Pouge of Linton, Ind. and Pualine Kirkman of Newburgh, Ind.; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Skipwroth officiating. Burial will follow in the Blake Cemetery in Todd County.
Eric Wayne Reeves
Russellville - Mr. Eric Wayne Reeves, 32, of Russellville died Monday, July 1, 2002 at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
Mr. Reeves was born in Logan County on June 5, 1970. He was a member of Duncan Chapel United Methodist Church, a salesman for Schwan’s and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Reeves; his mother, Brenda Reeves of Russellville; his father, Wayne Reeves of Russellville; one sister, Marty Carver of Greenville;maternal grandmother, Martha Tatum of Russellville; five nephews; and three favorite pets, Zeus, Eddie and Bill.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 4 at Young Funeral Home Russellville Chapel with Reverend Gail Bradford and Brother Joe Carrico officiating. Burial followed in Whippoorwill cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in the form of donations to the Brain Injury Association of Kentucky.
Lester Freeman Higgs
Manitou - Mr. Lester Freeman Higgs, 78, of Manitou died Friday, June 28, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Higgs was born in Muhlenberg County on October 15, 1923 to the late Hershel Higgs and the former Rethel Hendricks. He was retired former owner of Les’ Mobile Home Transport Co. and a member of the Bremen Mason Lodge. He was a World War II Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith. He was also an avid fisherman. Mr. Higgs was preceded in death by not only his parents but also, one son, Larry Higgs; one grandson, Chad Higgs; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Miriam (Dockins) Higgs; one son, Wayne Higgs of Manitou; two daughters, Diane Rone of Manitou and Brenda Kaye Gibson of Corydon; one brother, Chester Higgs of Bremen; two sisters, Sue West of Sacramento and Shirley Vanover of Owensboro; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Tompkins Funeral Homes Slaughters-Hanson Chapel with Reverend Darrel Hillhouse officiating. Burial followed in Gish Cemetery near Bremen.

Hazel Pittman
Central City - Mrs. Hazel Pittman, 87, of Central City died Monday, July 1, 2002 at Maple Manor Health Care Center.
Mrs. Pittman was born in Muhlenberg County on September 13, 1914. She was a homemaker and a member of Maple Grove General Baptist Church in South Carrollton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Pittman in 1985.
Survivors include one son, Harold Pittman of Central City; one daughter, Lavonda Mayes of Central City; and one grandson, Rodney Mayes of Central City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Dale Ward officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens in Powderly.
Lula J. “Lou” Perry
Madisonville - Ms. Lula J. “Lou” Perry, 78, died at Columbia Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas Nevada on Monday, July 1, 2002.
Ms. Perry was born in Graham on July 27, 1923 to the late John Young Jordan and the late Ruby Murphy Jordan. She was a housewife. She was a retired service representative of South Central Bell Telephone Company and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Madisonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ustus Perry on March 11, 1970; two brothers, Joe C. Jordan and Robert Lucian Jordan.
Survivors include one step-son, James L. Perry of Salem, New Hampshire; one sister, Mrs. Carl (Ilinic) Myrose of Henderson, Nevada; two step-grandsons, Wes Perryand Jeff Perry both of Salem, New Hampshire; three nephews, Carl Mayrose, Jr. of Carpinteria, California, Sam Mayrose of Atlanta, Georgia and Bruce Jordan of Powderly; three nieces, Sherry Thompson of Henderson, Brenda Rumple of Indianapolis, Indiana and Kathy Russell of Madisonville; and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 8, 2002 at the Chapel of Harris Funeral Home in Madisonville with Dr. Joe Leonard officiating. Burial followed in Antioch Cemetery near Central City in Muhlenberg County.
Jeffery Blaine Hunt
Lewisburg - Mr. Jeffery Blaine Hunt, 38, of Lewisburg died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at Hearthstone Place in Elkton.
Mr. Hunt was born in Logan County on March 1, 1964. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Hunt and Louie Paradine Hunt.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Linda McIntosh of Benton and Mrs. Deborah Evans of Clarksville; and two brothers, Mr. Morris Dean Hunt of Adamsville, Tenn. and Mr. Ron L. Hunt of Bowling Green.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg with Mr. Richard Crutchfield officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.
Jo Nell Peveler Spears
Greenville - Mrs. Jo Nell Peveler Spears, 79, of Greenville died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Select Hospital in Evansville.
Mrs. Spears was born in Muhlenberg County on June 1, 1923. She was a retired circuit court clerk in Muhlenberg County and was a member of New Prospect Church in Powderly.
Survivors include her husband, Jackie Spears of Greenville; one daughter, Betty Mitchell of Greenville; one granddaughter, Stacy Beaven of Madisonville; four step-grandchildren, Kevin Spears of Bremen, Angie Cook, Felicia Garrett and Monica Hazelwood, all three of Central City; seven step-grandchildren; and three brothers, David McEuen of Owensboro, J.W. McEuen of Central City and Glenn McEuen of Powderly.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home with Reverend Daniel Epley officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Doris M. Grace
Greenville - Mrs. Doris M. Grace, 87, of Greenville died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Grace was born in Christian County on May 9, 1915 to the late George W. Dickinson and Mary Jane Allen Dickinson. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Grace, October 28, 1993, two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Ellen (Bill) Collins of Madisonville, Marie (David) Hinton of Greenville, Anna Mae (Wilbur) Harkins of Greenvile and Barbara (Charles) Uzzle of Greenville; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-children; two half sisters, Wilodean Pentecost of Greenville and Betty Hughes of Central City; and one half brother, Douglas Dickinson of New York, New York.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Reverend C.W. Duncan officiating and assisted by Reverend George Thompson. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
Rev. Charles Alexander Wiseman Jr.
Clifty - Reverend Charles Alexander Wiseman, Jr., 58, of Clifty died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System in Owensboro after a lengthy illness.
Reverend Wiseman was born in Charleston, W.V. on December 25, 1943. He was a General Baptist Minister in the Long Creek Association for 31 years and he was a member of the Richardson Chapel General Baptist Church in Cleaton.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Joyce Bernice Buchanan Wiseman of Clifty; two sons, Charles E. (Tammy) Wiseman of Rosewood and Kevin W. (Tammy) Wiseman of Clifty; three daughters, Rhonda K. (Rocky) Laster of Greenville, Mary C. (Morris) Dwyer of Clifty and Denise R. (Wayne) Coleman of Chandler, In.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Allen Wiseman of Coperas, Tx. and James S. Wiseman of Clifty; and one sister, Patricia A. Finn of Clifty.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 28, 2002 at Trinity General Baptist Church in Clifty with Reverend T.H. Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Heltsley Cemetery in Clifty.
Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of all arrangements.
Herbert Shepherd
Browder - Mr. Herbert Shepherd, 94, of Browder, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at his home in Browder.
Mr. Shepherd was born in Muhlenberg County on May 8, 1908. He was a retired coal miner and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by one son, Deward Shepherd and one daughter, Betty Douglas.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marie Bowlin Shepherd of Browder; one son, William H. Shepherd of Browder; one step-son, Buddy Miller of Browder; one step-daughter, Dottie Revil of Beechmont; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 28, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Beechmont with Reverend Gary Hines officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.
John Michael Gadson
Central City - Mr. John Michael Gadson, 45, of Central City died Monday, June 24, 2002 at his residence in Central City.
Mr. Gadson was born in Muhlenberg County on May 26, 1957. He was a welder and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Drakesboro.
Survivors include one daughter, Jenny Reed Gadson of Greenville; his mother, Elsie Reese of Central City; three sisters, Margorie Reese, Linda Reese and Ella Reese all of Central City; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at West End Cemetery in Greenville with Reverend Earl Hocker officiating. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville.
Tucker Funeral Home in Central City was in charge of all arrangements.
J.P. Barton
Russellville - Mr. J.P. Barton, 65, of Russellville died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Colonial Manor in Bowling Green after a long illness.
Mr. Barton was born in Butler County on February 6, 1937 to the late Coleman and Aubrey Green Burton. He was retired from Carpenter Company and a member of the Green Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Fay Stratton Barton of Russellville; two daughters, Mrs. Steve “Robin” Christmas of Sharpsburg, Ga. and Mrs. Grant “Dawn” Chapman of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two brothers, Billy Barton of Elkton and Larry Barton of Russellville; three sisters, Doris Wells and Helen Wells both of Lewisburg and Myra Wells of Russellville; and one grandson, Barton Trace Christmas.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with Reverend Jim Gifford officiating. Burial followed in Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville.
Ellen Marie Stanley
Greenville - Mrs. Ellen Marie Stanley, 76, of Greenville died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville after a short illness.
Mrs. Stanley was born in Muhlenberg County on October 6, 1925. She was a former postal worker. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.B. Stanley.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen (Edward) Derring of Hammond, Ind.; two grandsons, Bryan Derring, Sr. of Greenville and Edward E. Deering III of Hammond, Ind.; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Blackie Alverson of Powderly, Eugene Alverson of Central City and Willie Alverson of Greenville; and one sister, Virginia Henry of Owensboro.
There were no services or visitation.

Janett M. Oliver
Providence - Ms. Janett M. Oliver, 69, of Providence, formerly of Bremen, died Monday, June 24, 2002 at the Senior Citizens Nursing Center in Madisonville.
Ms. Oliver was born in Vanderburg, Indiana on March 31, 1933 to the late Earl and Evelyn David. She was a factory worker.
Survivors include two sons, Milton Oliver of Central City and Larry Oliver of Bremen; two daughters, Vallerie Peyton and Anita McRay both of Bremen; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold David of Darmstat, Indiana and Charles David of Huntsville, Alabama.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. Danny Onan officiating. Burial followed in Gish Cemetery in Bremen.
Vernon Jenkins
Clarksville, Tenn. - Mr. Vernon Jenkins, 91, of Clarksville, Tennessee died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Walking Horse Meadows.
Mr. Jenkins was born in Rosewood, Ky. on December 23, 1910 to the late Claude and Flossie Cisney Jenkins. He was the retired founder of Jenkins and Wynne Ford-Lincoln and Mercury. He was a member of Madison Street United Methodist Church, Queen City Masonic Lodge #761, Shriners, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, past President of AUSA, past President of Tennessee Auto Dealers Association, Tennessee’s Nomination for Time Magazine’s Quality Dealership Award in 1984, and founder and past President of Clarksville New Car Dealers Association. He was also an Army Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by not only his parents but also his wife, Evelyn Martin Jenkins.
Survivors include one son, Don Jenkins of Clarksville, Tenn.; one half-sister, Ella Mae Hughes of Cadiz; and two grandchildren, Casey Jenkins and Blake Jenkins both of Clarksville.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Madison Street United Methodist Church with Dr. John David Laida and Dr. Doug Norfleet officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.
