POWDERLY - Bobby Gene Hatfield, 74, of Powderly, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Health System following a short illness.
Born July 27, 1928 in Muhlenberg County, the son of Walter Swanford Hatfield and Aurelia Beatrice Phillips Hatfield, he was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was of the Church of Christ faith. He retired in 1991 from Island Creek Coal Company as a UMWA coal miner. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lou Hatfield in 1962; and by his father, Walter Swanford Hatfield.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dean Middleton Hatfield of Powderly; one daughter, Andrehia Hatfield of Powderly; his mother, Aurelia Beatrice Phillips Hatfield of Greenville; one brother, Douglas Hatfield of Greenville; two sisters, Martha Muriel Alverson of Powderly and Marjorie Alice Finley of Greenville; and one cousin, Bobby Gene Phillips of Morganfield.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 23, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Dr. Ray England and Rev. Jeremy Hatfield officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
William Dennis Jones
BREMEN - William Dennis Jones, 65, of Bremen, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born April 21, 2003, in Muhlenberg County, he was of the Baptist faith. He was a miner and had worked as an electrician at Peabody Coal Co.
He is survived by one son, William D. Jones, Jr. of Greenville; three daughters, Tamera L. McCorquodale, Angela R. Bartley and Betty J. Jones, all of Bremen; one granddaughter, Makayla J. Jones; two step - grandchildren, Amber Nelson and Holly Fisher; four brothers, Benjamin F. Jones, Halbert E. Jones, Gary R. Jones and Ronnie L. Jones; four sisters, Imogene House, Mary L. Horn, Roberta Harris and Ann Dean Thompson.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 23, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Rusty Trotter officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery.
Bessie M. Evans
MORGANTOWN - Bessie M. Evans, 70, of Morgantown, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in Leitchfield, Ky.
Born in Ohio County, the daughter of the late Dan and Delia Burden Moore, she was retired from General Electric Co. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Renee Evans.
She is survived by her husband, Erdest Evans of Morgantown; three daughters, Elaine Phelps and Karen Evans, both of Morgantown, and Sherri Beth Mudd of Caneyville; five grandsons; two granddaughters; one step - granddaughter; four step - great - grandchildren; one special son, Glen Crowe of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Jean Hassell of Beaver Dam, Nita Stoffer of Fordsville, Wilma Daugherty of Louisville and Margie Crowe of New Albany, Ind.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 25, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Morgantown. Burial followed in Greenbriar Cemetery in Morgantown. Smith Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.
Hubert Ray Bowen Sr.
NELSON CREEK - Hubert Ray Bowen Sr., 76, of Nelson Creek, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at his residence.
Born Jan. 1, 1927 to Jacob and Mable Bowen, he was a graduate of Drakesboro High School. He retired from Peabody Coal Company Central Shop as superintendent after 42 years. He attended Nelson Creek Baptist Church and was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Singleton Bowen of Nelson Creek; one son, Hubert Ray (Ann) Bowen Jr. of Central City; two grandchildren, Myra Nannie and Michael Bowen, both of Central City; three great - grandchildren, Sarah, Toni and Cortnie Nannie, all of Central City; one sister, Loretta White of Greenville; and three nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 25, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Opal Bernadine Rhoades
CINCINNATI, OHIO - Opal Bernadine Rhoades, 96, of Cincinnati, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Manor Care Woodside in Mederia, Ohio.
Born Nov. 6, 1906 in Muhlenberg County, she was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Terri Rhoades of Cincinnati; two great - granddaughters; one brother, Charles M. Shanks of Owensboro; and two sisters, Louise Schmeid of New Caswell, Tenn. and Ava Nell Whittinghill of Bremen.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 26 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial followed in Shavers Chapel Cemetery in Bremen.
Jason Wayne Hall
DRAKESBORO - Jason Wayne Hall, 20, of Drakesboro, died Thursday, May 22, 2003 in Central City.
Born Oct. 19, 1982 in Muhlenberg County, he was a graduate of Muhlenberg South High School where he played football and served as team captain. He also coached the Muhlenberg South Suns youth football team after graduation and was the offensive coach in 2001. He was employed by Iron Workers Local 492 in Nashville and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
He is survived by his parents, Alan Hall of Drakesboro and Judy Hall of Bremen; his grandparents, Wayne and Becky Hall of Cleaton, Janice Rodgers of Lake Malone and J. C. and Juanita Jones of Weir; great - grandparents Bill and Glenda Ewing of Drakesboro and Alvin and Anna Hall of Cleaton. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 25, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Thomas Croft
LOUISVILLE - Thomas Croft, 73, of Louisville, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at the Caritas Medical Center in Louisville.
Born May 16, 1930 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired shipping clerk from Ford Motor Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Marie Croft in January 2003.
Survivors include one son, Thomas E. (Lisa Ann) Croft of Owensboro; one daughter, Alice E. (Joseph B.) Liner of Louisville; four grandchildren, Kelly and Stacy, Shane and Andrew; and one brother, Martin Croft of Richmond.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 26, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Thelma Mae Woods
BREMEN - Thelma Mae Woods, 79, of Bremen, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1923 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a member of Powers Chapel General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Pallace Woods in 1975; her mother, Pearl Huskisson in 1987; stepfather, Ellis Huskisson in 1984; son, Ellis Ray Woods in 1995; and three brothers, Robert “Bob” Woods in 1990, James Woods in 1991 and Lyndel Woods in 1997.
She is survived by one sister, Nancy Reynolds of Boonville, Ind.; one brother, Harold Woods of Flower Mound, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. W. Haire officiating. Burial will follow in Corley Chapel Cemetery in Graham.

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Dorothy M. Johnson Bingham, 82, of Indianapolis, died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The Marion County native was an active member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church for many years.
She is survived by one sister, Cordie Johnson of Greenville; one brother, Will Henry Johnson of Gary, Ind.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation, from 11 a.m. noon, and funeral services at 12 noon, will be held Saturday, May 31 at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Bibbs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WINCHESTER, OHIO - Donna Lee Piper, 66, of Winchester died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Winchester Elderly Care.
Born March 3, 1939 in Flint, Mich., she was a homemaker and of the Presbyterian faith.
She is survived by five sons, one daughter and two grandchildren.

Born Oct. 26, 1927 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Kiper of Pontiac, Mich. and Ronald Kiper of Douglasville, Ga.; one daughter, Bonita Warren of Hartford, Ky.; eight grandchildren; two nephews, Jack Kiper and Bob Payton; and one brother, Bill Blyth of Pontiac, Mich.

Verna Lee Asher, 79, of Central City, died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born July 5, 1922 in Bell County, she was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gabe and Sally Hoskins.
She is survived by one son, Jimmy Ray Asher of Central City; one granddaughter, Lisa (Jim) McDonald of Greenville; one stepgrandson, Matthew McDonald of Greenville; one sister, Jean Rose of London, Ky. and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by one son, Bedford Vincent of Bremen; one daughter, Sandra Pannell of Central City; four grandchildren, Allen Vincent, Dana Bartley, Michael Pannell and Glenna Brown; and ten great - grandchildren.

BROWDER - Larry Ronald Pentecost, 60, of Browder, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at his residence.
Born May 26, 1942, he was retired from TVA as a machinist/welder. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by three sons, Timothy Pentecost of Madisonville, William Donald Pentecost and Richard Pentecost, both of Browder; four grandchildren, William Donald Pentecost Jr., Brittney Pentecost, Torie Pentecost and Dustyn Pentecost; his mother, Annabel Pentecost of Madisonville; two brothers, Bryan Thomas Pentecost of Central City and Arthur Ray Pentecost of Madisonville; and one sister, Brenda Jameson of Madisonville.

Mary Ruth Bivens Black
Mary Ruth Bivens Black, 94, of Central City, died of natural causes Friday, May 23, 2003, at Sparks Nursing Facility in Central City.
Born Nov. 9, 1908, she was a native of Waylan Springs, Tenn. and was the daughter of the late Blake and Louise Elizabeth Brewer Bivens. She was a clerk at the old P.N. Hirsh and J.C. Penney department stores in Hopkinsville and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Delbert Black in 1986.
She is survived by one son, the Rev. Allen Black of South Carrollton; one daughter, Yvonne (Bill) Newman of Killeen, Texas and four grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Sunday, May 25, at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville with her son, the Rev. Allen Black officiating. Hughart and Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville was in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Gideons International.
