Dunmor - Mr. George Nelvis Williams, Jr., 36, of Dunmor died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Mr. Williams was born in Lewisburg on November 3, 1965. He was a laborer at Dogwood Amusement Park.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Margie Ann Williams of Dunmor; his fiancee, Ms. Tijuana Shelton of Dunmor; one daughter, Mrs. Kelsey Ann Williams of Dunmor; two sons, Mr. George Nelvis Lee Williams of Dunmor and Mr. Taylor Scott Williams of Dunmor; and three sisters, Mrs. Kandy Sorrels of Dunmor, Mrs. Terrie Mayes of White House, Tenn. and Mrs. Michelle Williams of Dunmor.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg with Reverend Darrell Boatwright officiating. Burial followed in Hughes Cemetery in Dunmor.
A memorial fund has been set up at Lewisburg Banking Company.
Jewell “J.K.” Samples
Ashland, Virginia - Mr. Jewell K. “J.K.” Samples, 86, of Ashland, Virginia died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Machanicville, Va.
Mr. Samples was born in Graham on March 8, 1916. He retired in 1980 as Superintendent of the Hanover County School System after 40 years.He graduated from Graham High School and Western Kentucky University with a degree in industrial arts and the University of Tennessee with a M.A. degree. He was assistant state supervisor of Trade and Industrial Education with the State Department of Education in Virginia in 1956. He was a World War II Air Force Veteran serving as Captain. He was preceded in death by one daughter in 1942.
Survivors include his wife, Vada Samples of Ashland; and three nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 5, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in Yeargins Chapel Cemetery in Graham.
Donnie Wayne Jernigan
Greenville - Mr. Donnie Wayne Jernigan, 48, of Greenville died Thursday, June 27, 2002 in an auto accident on Powderly Cleaton Cutoff Road in Powderly.
Mr. Jernigan was born in Muhlenberg County on November 20, 1953. He was a member of Boilermakers Local Lodge #40 Elizabethtown and Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church in Greenville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Junior Jernigan and Willadean Webb Jernigan.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Sharon Crabtree Jernigan; three sons, Charles Edward (Chuck) Jernigan of Greenville, Branden Wayne Jernigan at home and Chanse LeAaron Jernigan at home; one grandson, Tanner Wayne Burden of Central City; and one brother, Eddie Dean Jernigan of Tell City, In.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Reverend Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial followed in Nebo Cemetery in Nebo. Boilermakers services were also held Saturday, June 29, at Gary’s Funeral Home.
John William Stirrat
Madisonville - Mr. John William Stirrat, 79, of Madisonville died Saturday, July 29, 2002 at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Stirrat was born in South Wilmington, Illinois on June 6, 1923. He was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II serving in the Army. He was of the Baptist faith and was former Assistant Fire Chief of Greenville Fire Department.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth Erickson of Tinley Park, Illinois.
A graveside military service will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at 11 a.m.at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of all arrangements.
Rudolph Steele
Powderly - Mr. Rudolph Steele, 79, of Powderly died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Steele was born in Muhlenberg County on May 8, 1923. He was of the Baptist faith and was a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Janie Steele of Powderly; three sons, Harlan Steele of Montana, Bradley Steele of Washington and Junior Rudolph Steele of Texas; one step-son, Roger Brown of Greenville; and two daughters, Lenny Steele of Washington and Teresa Steele of Washington.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Reverend Carl Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the Nebo Cemetery.
Jimmie Faye Runyan
Beech Creek - Mrs. Jimmie Faye Runyan, 53, of Beech Creek died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Mrs. Runyan was born in Christian County on March 12, 1949. She was a bookkeeper for Michael Goldston C.P.A. and a member of the First Christian Church in Greenville.
Survivors include her husband, Herman Runyan; one son, John David Runyan of Russellville; four grandchildren, Cody, Zackery, Jacob Runyan and Clara Cox; and one sister, Joann Frederick of Hopkinsville.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 21, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend George Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Mary M. Alexander
Central City - Ms. Mary Magdeline Alexander, 76, of Central City died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Ms. Alexander was born in St. Charles, Kentucky on September 5, 1925. She was a cook at the Royal Palm-KY Grill.
Survivors include one son, Ronnie Alexander of Central City; four daughters, Pat Ford of Greenville, Linda Alexander of Central City, Shelia Alexander of Greenville and Sondra Roberts of Trinity, AL; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial were held privately.
Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
Ed Smith
Penrod - Mr. Ed Smith, 83, of Penrod died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Smith was born in Muhlenberg County on September 16, 1918. He was a retired railroad employee for New York Central Railroad.
Survivors include his compassionate caregiver, Lori Walker; two sisters, Iris Guernsey of Menifee, CA and Irene Williamson of Philpot; two brothers, Alfred Smith of Russellville and John Smith of Toledo, OH; four nieces; and five nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 23, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Edna Lucille Barbee
Central City - Mrs. Edna Lucille Barbee, 60, of Central City died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at her residence.
Mrs. Barbee was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 31, 1941. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Darvin Barbee of Central City; four sons, Brandon Barbee of Louisville, Dennis Lawrence of Elkhart, IN, Anthony Barbee of Elwood, KS and Jason Barbee of Le Grange, KY; two daughters, Sherry Lorenzen of Greenville and Denise McDaniels of Rossville, GA; her mother, Arma Lucille McCleese of Detroit; two sisters, Alma Joy Andrews and Irene McCleese both of Detroit; and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 22, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Central City with Father Ben Luther officiating. Burial followed in Wyatts Chapel Cemetery.

James Leroy Gillaspie
Graham - Mr. James LeRoy Gillaspie, 78, of Graham died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at his home in Graham.
Mr. Gillaspie was born in Muhlenberg County on July 22, 1923. He owned and operated a grocery in Graham for 50 years before retirement. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of East Union Baptist Church and was a deacon for 40 years and a Sunday School Teacher. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Robinson and his parents, John and Opal Gillaspie.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Hallie Dee Brown Gillaspie of Graham; four daughters, Brenda (Gayle) Baggett of Greenville, Janice Strader of Graham, Libby (Tony) Knight of Sullivan, IN and Sarah (Kevin) Morris of Campbellsville; one son-in-law, James Robinson of Greenville; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Hill of Graham; two brothers, Robert Gillaspie of Bowling Green and John M. Gillaspie of Hopkinsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Reverend Ron Wingo officiating. Burial followed in East Union Cemetery in Graham.
Rufus Wells
Jason Ridge - Mr. Rufus Wells, 92, of Jason Ridge died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center after an illness.
Mr. Wells was born in Todd County to the late Horace and Dellie Wells. He was a retired farmer and a member of New Harmony Church in Todd County for over 70 years.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Maltie McGehee Wells; four daughters, Louise Cornelius, Mildred Arnold, Della Jones and Mary McPherson all of Lewisburg; six sons, Melrow Wells, Eugene Wells, Robert Wells and Clarence Wells all of Lewisburg and James Wells of Madison, AL and John Wells of Murray; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at New Harmony Church in Todd County with Reverend Bobby Vance officiating and Reverend John Yuhas assisting. Burial followed in Carneal Cemetery in Todd County.

Kaitlyn Grace Vanover
Bremen - Infant Kaitlyn Grace Vanover died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System in Owensboro.
Infant Vanover was born in Daviess County on Sunday, June 23, 2002.
Survivors include her parents, Nathan and Michele Hobgood Vanover of Bremen; grandparents, Freddie and Brenda Hobgood of Bremen, Jerald and Gaye Glaysbrook of Sacramento and Gary and Jennie Vanover of Bremen; and her great-grandparents, Mary Hobgood of Central City, Howard and Clara Holder of Henderson, Bernard and Faye Hobby of Princeton, J.C. and Reba Hinton of Sacramento and Sarah Vanover of Bremen.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 24, 2002 at Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen with Reverend Danny Greene officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.

Mary Alice Thomas
Greenville - Ms. Mary Alice (Martin) Thomas, 64, of Bowling Green, formerly of Greenville, died Friday, June 21, 2002 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Ms. Thomas was a Muhlenberg County native and was a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Depoy where she served as Sunday School Teacher and a Missionary worker.
Survivors include three sons, Charles (Chuck) Martin and Gene Martin, both of Central City and Michael Martin of Greenville; one daughter, Rita Daniels of Bowling Green; 12 grandchildren; two nephews; one brother, Robert Mitchell of Central City; two aunts, Dorothy H. Bibbs of Greenville and Lottie Parks of Indianapolis, Indiana; one step-son, Harold Thomas of Houston, Texas; and one step-daughter, Carol Elmore of Calumet Park, Illinois.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville.

Mable Rose Whitworth
Central City - Ms. Mable Rose Whitworth, 80, of Central City died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville.
Ms. Whitworth was born in Muhlenberg County on May 30, 1922. She was a homemaker and a member of Cleaton Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Joey Whitworth of Drakesboro; three daughters, Carolyn Crunk and Sandra Whitworth both of Central City and Marsha Dunning of South Carrollton; six grandchildren, Teresa Dukes, Stuart Dunning, Jason Whitworth, Kristen Dunning, Justin Whitworth and Dalton Whitworth; and six great-grandchildren, Shandi Dukes, Shari Dukes, Caleb Dunning, Sara Dunning, Robert Dunning and Destiny Dunning.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend R.D. Mize officiating and Reverend Mike Chambers assisting. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Tally Ray Young
Central City - Mr. Tally Ray Young, 77, of Central City died Sunday, June 23, 2002.
Mr. Young was born in Muhlenberg County on February 8, 1925. The Muhlenberg County native was a semi-retired professional painter. He enjoyed spending time fishing on the Green River, working in his garden and he was an avid reader. He was a Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy and his grandson, Kenny Underwood. He was a friend to many and loved by all.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Young of Greenville; five daughters, Rita Underwood of Graham and Denise Wester, Callie Ashbury, Judy Young and Tallie Miller all of Central City; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five brothers, Harold Young of Central City, Conis Young of Phoenix, Arizona, Billy Young of Columbus, Ohio, Bobby Young of Phoenix, Arizona and Darrell Young of Phoenix, Arizona; and two sisters, Shirley Whitmer of Haines, Florida and Jeanette Ledford of Manchester, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Bob Lowery officiating and Reverend W.R. Cook assisting. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Janett M. Oliver
Providence - Ms. Janett M. Oliver, 69, of Providence, formerly of Bremen, died Monday, June 24, 2002 at the Senior Citizens Nursing Center in Madisonville.
Ms. Oliver was in Vanderburg, Indiana on March 31, 1933 to the late Earl and Evelyn David. She was a factory worker.
Survivors include two sons, Milton Oliver of Central City and Larry Oliver of Bremen; two daughters, Vallerie Peyton and Anita McRay both of Bremen; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold David of Darmstat, Indiana and Charles David of Huntsville, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial will follow in Gish Cemetery in Bremen.
