LOUISVILLE - Delma Wice, 78, of Louisville, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at the Bashford East Health Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 21, 1924 in Muhlenberg County, she was the daughter of Claude and Addie Jones Spurlin, and had lived in Louisville for approximately 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Wice on April 16, 1992.
She is survived by one adopted daughter, Wanda Newman; two grandsons, Jerry Rice and Larry Rice; and four cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 5, at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Epley officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greenville.
Foster Wright
ELKTON - Foster Wright, 77, of Elkton, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.
Born Jan. 16, 1926 in Green County, Ky., he was the son of the late Samuel G. and Willie Lobb Wright. He was a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oather Edward, Maxey and Arnold Wright; three sisters, Mary Frances Sholar, Aileen Wright and Flossie Amos.
He is survived by his wife, Ethlyne Hester Wright of Elkton; one sister, Roxie Sudeth of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Latham Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Mock officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Alana D’Ann Kinney Milam
WHITE PLAINS - Alana D’Ann Kinney Milam, 35, of White Plains, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a lengthy illness.
Born May 13, 1967 in Muhlenberg County, she was the daughter of John Orion Kinney and the late Shirley Ann Dukes Kinney. She was a member of Maple Grove General Baptist Church in South Carrollton. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Ann Dukes Kinney on Feb. 25, 2002.
She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Jeffery Milam of White Plains; one son, Shawn Milam of White Plains; one daughter, Sheree Croft of White Plains; one stepdaughter, Chasity Dickerson of Madisonville; one stepgranddaughter, Kaitlyn Dickerson of Madisionville; her father, John Kinney of White Plains; her grandparents, Ralph and Irene Kinney of Greenville; and one brother, Willie Kinney of White Plains.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Revs. T. H. Davis and Leamon Mefford officiating. Burial followed in Old Liberty Cemetery in Greenville.
Gladys Farmer
HOPKINSVILLE - Gladys Farmer, 81, of Hopkinsville, formerly of Greenville, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Wellstar Douglas Hospital in Douglasville, Ga. after a short illness.
Born July 10, 1921 in Todd County, she was the daughter of Joseph Clark Phipps and Martha Louada Phipps. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Allan Farmer, in 1978 and her grandson, Tony Dewayne Durham in 1983.
She is survived by her daughter, Correne Cowell of Hopkinsville; two grandsons; one granddaughter; one great - granddaughter; and one great - grandson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Joseph Groves officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in White Plains.
Bobby J. Gray
SOUTHGATE, MICH. - Bobby J. Gray, 69, of Southgate, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1933 in Luzerne, he was the son of Roy and Gladys Gray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Gladys (Evitts) Conductor; and by a sister, Betty Metz.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane (Evitts); one daughter, Lora (Bill) Earley; one son, Tracy; three granddaughters, Amber (Daniel) Bruce; Brittney and Chelsea Earley; one sister, Martie (Gray) Connally of Ohio.
Funeral services were held at Charity Baptist Church in Brownstown, Michigan, Tuesday, May 6. A graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 9, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
Joshua Curtis Boyd
Joshua Curtis Boyd, 22, of Central City, died May 2, 2003, at Lime Lake in Central City.
Born June 26, 1980 in Muhlenberg County he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was employed at McDonald’s Restaurant in Greenville.
He is survived by his father, Clifford Boyd of Central City; his mother, Judy Vick of Cleaton; two brothers, Clifford Vick of Fredonia and Jason Boyd of Central City; four sisters, Brittany Houle of Central City, Tiffany Boyd of Cleaton, Sabrina Boyd and Amber Boyd, both of Belton; grandmother, Emma Boyd of Cleaton; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Heady officiating. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville.
Verona Edna Green
CROSSVILLE, TENN. - Verona Edna Green, 71, of Crossville, died Wednesday, April 30.
Born July 12, 1931 in Depoy, she was the daughter of Foster Earl Brewer and Verona Mary Short Brewer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Courtland Thomas Brewer.
She is survived by her husband, Horace Ray Green of Crossville; one daughter, Terri Lynn Green of Knoxville; one son, Daniel Ray (Katherine Ann) Green of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Carroll Larkins Brewer and Foster Earl Brewer, both of Kentucky; three sisters, Margrette Ree Brewer Bohan of Kentucky; Henrietta Emmaline Brewer Adcock of Nashville and Annie Laurie Brewer Newman of Scott County, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 2, 2003, at Thurman Funeral Home in Sparta, Tenn. with the Rev. Randy White officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill - Memorial Park Cemetery in Cumberland County.
Thomas Julian Greene
GREENVILLE - Thomas Julian Greene, 86, of Greenville, died Monday, May 5, at the Maple Manor Health Care Center after a short illness.
Born September 23, 1916 in Decatur, Ala., he was a farmer, furniture maker, woodworker, and song bird artist. He was a graduate of Brescia College and a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church. He was a veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Bailey Greene in 1999.
He is survived by two daughters, Betsy Greene of Lewisburg and Mary Sherrod of Greenville; three grandchildren, Laura Burton, Elaina Hutchinson and Wesley Hutchinson; and four great - grandchildren.
There will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harbin Memorial Library in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Margie Lou Flatt Lear
POWDERLY - Margie Lou Flatt Lear, 65, of Powderly, died Sunday, May 4, at her residence, after a lengthy illness.
Born March 11, 1938 in Muhlenberg County, she was the daughter of Robert Flatt and Mary Lou Bryant Flatt. She was a cook and housewife. She was a member of Joines Chapel General Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lear, in 1994 and son, Thomas Wayne Lear.
She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Sigers of Greenville, Phyllis Tyler of Powderly and Joyce Sigers of Elkton; one son, Jimmy Lear of Clifty; seven grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; one brother, Glendal Flatt of Greenville; and one sister, Eula Mae Bryant of Clay, Ky.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 11 a.m., also at Gary’s Funeral Home, with the Revs. Hershel Drake and Billy Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Joines Chapel Cemetery.
Phillip Dean Veitch
CHICAGO - Phillip Dean Veitch, 71, died Monday, May 2, 2005 at Christ Hospital in Oaklawn, Ill.
Born in Kanpolis, Kansas Oct. 23, 1933, he was retired from Central Steel & Wire.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jones Veitch; a brother, Archie Louis Veitch of Yellsville, Ark. and a sister, Billie Taylor of Branson, Mo.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. May 7 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Carol Erwin officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
James Ronald Smith
ELKTON - James Ronald Smith, 64, died Monday, May 2, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Anderson, S. C. Aug. 15, 1940, he was the son of the late Bill Bell and Helen Brown Smith. He was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church and a business manager of Smith Heating and Air for 31 years in Easley, S. C. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 36 years, Louisa Townsend Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Gayla Monice Slaughter Smith; two sons, Scott (Sylvia) Smith of Liberty, S. C. and Mike (Sabrinia) Smith of Easley, S. C.; a step-son, James Bryan Hancock of Owensboro; three step-daughters, Jacque Fuller and Amy Vincent, both of Greenville and Jennifer Striss of Anderson, S. C.; two brothers, Billy Bell and Jacky Smith, both of Pelzer, S. C.; a sister, Wanda Smith of Washington State and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. May 5 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in Green Lawn Cemetery in Easley, S. C. William Ray Benton
DRAKESBORO - William Ray Benton, 88, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Ohio County July 6, 1916, he was he son of the late John L. and Orpha Davenport Benton. He was employed by the Muhlenberg County Board of Education as a bus driver for 30 years and a retired farmer. He was a member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church for over 50 years and a trustee for several years. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Robinson, Mable Sullivan, Lanora Hammers and Louise Hunt.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Duprey Mefford Benton; two sons, Terry D. (Shelia) Benton of Browder and Larry R. (Linda) Benton of Drakesboro; three grandchildren, Kevin (Carla) Benton, Darrin (Tammy) Benton and Derrick (Lindsay Adcock) Benton and four great - grandchildren, Jarred Kevin Benton, Justin Alexander Benton, Brook Elizabeth Benton and Samuel Ray Benton.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. May 6 at Union Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Glendel Harper officiating and the Rev. Kerry Vincent assisting. Burial followed in the Rochester Cemetery in Rochester. In lieu of flowers make donations to Rochester Cemetery. Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
James D. Carter
James D. Carter, 31, died Monday, May 2, 2005 at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton, Tenn.
Born in Holden, W. Va. Oct. 8, 1974, he is the son of Odvert Carter Sr. of Central City and Dianne Groves Whitaker of Dayton, Tenn. and the step - son of Doug Whitaker also of Dayton, Tenn. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Whitaker.
Survivors include his wife Traci Scoggins Carter of Beaver Dam; three sons, Logan Carter and Tyler Carter, both of Beaver Dam and James Michael Thompson of Logan, W. Va.; a daughter, Kayla Thompson of Logan, W. Va. and four brothers, Odvert Carter Jr. and Brandon Whitaker, both of Dayton, Tenn., Bryan Whitaker of Plymouth, Ind. and Jason Whitaker of Richmond, Va.
