GREENVILLE - Ruth Elizabeth Sumner, 80, of Greenville, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Maple Manor Health Care Center in Greenville following several months of illness.
Born Aug. 18, 1922 in Muhlenberg County, the daughter of Silas Landrum and Harriette Newman Landrum, she was a member of Drakesboro United Methodist Church. She was a retired grocery store clerk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Sumner in 1974; daughter, Ella Sumner in 1967; six sisters, Ethel Williams in 1981, Lottie Carver in 1983, Emma Landrum in 1983, Pauline Carver in 1995, Eunice Gant in 1988 and Virginia Alderson in 1989; and one brother, Guy Landrum in 1974.
She is survived by one son, Edward (Donna) Sumner of Greenville; one step-grandchild, Jennifer Shemwell of Greenville; two step-great-grandchildren, Erin and Addison Shemwell of Greenville; and one sister, Jane Carter of Ukiah, Calif.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Dr. Ray England officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BREMEN - Jerrod Allen Watson, 21, of Bremen, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
He was born August 21, 1981 in Muhlenberg County.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Fleming Watson; two brothers, Adam Watson and Lucas Watson, both of Bremen; grandmother, Cora Fleming; and several cousins, uncles and aunts.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, at 5 p.m., at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 19, at 10 a.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mable Marie Byers
SACRAMENTO - Mable Marie Byers, 90, of Sacramento, died Saturday, March 15, 2003.
Born June 20, 1912 in Ohio County, she was a homemaker and a member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church in Central City.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Shemwell of Central City and Betty Fields of Sacramento; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Estil Geary of Central City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18, at Tucker Funeral Home in Sacramento with the Rev. Leroy Reardon officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home in Sacramento was in charge of arrangements.
Alice B. Vickers
SACRAMENTO - Alice B. Vickers, 90, of Sacramento, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born April 20, 1912 in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of Sacramento Baptist Church. She enjoyed her church and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Russell Vickers in 1992.
She is survived by one son, Johnny (Penny) Vickers of Sacramento; one daughter, Margaret (Payton) Bullock of Sacramento; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Wilkins of Roseville, Mich.; and one brother, Everett Brown of Bremen.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at Sacramento Baptist Church with the Rev. Darell Eldridge officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Sacramento Baptist Church. Tucker Funeral Home in Sacramento was in charge of arrangements.
Ozzie P. Duvall
MILTON, FLA. - Ozzie P. Duvall, 81, of Milton, Fla., died Friday, March 14, 2003, while hospitalized.
Born in Kentucky, she moved to Milton in 1959. She was retired from Monsanto and was a member of First Assembly of God Church of Milton.
She is survived by four sons, Howard Duvall, James (Jean) Duvall and Claude (Melanie) Duvall, all of Milton, and Sam (Linda) Duvall of Montgomery, Ala.; three daughters, Margaret (Scott) Wood of Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara (Larry) Cooper of Milton; Ruthie (Bill) Henderson of Loxley, Ala.; one brother, C. L. (Trudy) Edwards of Madisonville; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 16, at Donnie Sowell Funeral Home in Milton with the Rev. Fred Rogers, pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Milton, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Womens Ministry Class of First Assembly of God Church in Milton. Donnie Sowell Funeral Home in Milton was in charge of arrangements.
Bernard Fulton Miller
GREENVILLE - Bernard Fulton Miller, 85, of Greenville, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson after several months of illness.
Born January 27, 1918 in McCracken County, the son of Ervin Carl Mueller and Grace V. Philips Mueller, he was retired from TVA as a I.B.E.W. electrician in 1983. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Central City and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post #5478. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Evelyn Miller, in 1989 and son, James Fulton Miller in 1982.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Lucille Stanley Miller of Greenville; one daughter, Marilyn Kogut of Worth, Ill.; two step-daughters, Betty Jowder and Barbara Johnston, both of Greenville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Betty Lou Goodman
ODELL, ILL. - Betty Lou Goodman, 62, of Odell, Ill., died Friday, March 14, 2003, at her residence.
Born February 11, 1941 in Central City, she was a homemaker and a member of Christian Fellowship in Pontiac, Ill. She enjoyed her family and friends and especially “Pixie”. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis “Whity” Goodman in 1982; one brother, Lindell Sigers, one sister, Nerina Armour and one granddaughter, Jessica Ribordy.
She is survived by two sons, Willis “Eddie” Goodman of Pontiac, Ill. and Bryan Keith Goodman of Central City; three daughters, Teresa (Fred) Ball and Linda Flanery, both of Central City, and Peggy (John) Ribordy of Odell, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 19, 6 8 p.m., at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 10 a.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
William Louis Rager
BREMEN - William Louis Rager, 65, of Bremen, died Monday, March 17, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born July 27, 1937 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Living Word Church in Central City. He was a mechanic, employed by Car-Mart in Sebree.
He is survived by his wife, Zalpha Ann Mercer Rager; two sons, Jeff Rager of Owensboro and Troy Rager of Powderly; two daughters, Kathy Stanley and Lana Rager, both of Bremen; five grandchildren, Beth Griffin, Crissy Rager, Sheena Cloud, Candance Rager and Ashley Stanley; two great-grandchildren; mother, Loshia Rager; two brothers, John Rager and Earl Rager, both of Bremen; and two half-sisters, Margaret Koonce and Geneva Rager, both of Bremen.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, beginning at 6 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 2 p.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Enoch Rich officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen. William H. “Willie” Ashley Sr.
DRAKESBORO - William H. “Willie” Ashley Sr., 67, of Drakesboro, died Friday, March 14, 2003 at his residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1935 in Lynchburg, Va., he was a retired pipe fitter and a member of Beechmont Church of Christ. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by one son, Joshua Ashley in 1992.
He is survived by his spouse, Etta Littlefield Ashley; two sons, William H. Hank Ashley Jr. of Beechmont and Johnny Ashley of Browder; one daughter, Rosanne Gamblin of Bremen; six grandchildren, Erin and Ashley Gamblin, William H. “Will” Ashley III , Paula Ashley, Jessica and Elizabeth Ashley; father, Robert Ashley of Staunton, Va.,; one brother, Ronnie Ashley of Staunton, Va.; two sisters, Donna Ryder of Staunton, Va. and Barbara Williams of Roebuck, S.C.

Edward Ray Sorrels
NASHVILLE, TENN. - Edward Ray Sorrels, 50, of Nashville, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Born Oct. 27, 1952, the son of Floyd and Lillian Sorrels of Belton, he was preceded in death by his fiancée, Amelia Bradley.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Floyd Sorrels Jr. of Browder, Benjamin Sorrels and Lloyd Sorrels, both of Dunmor; and his sister, Donna Harrell of Belton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 1:30 p.m., at Buena Vista Funeral Home in Clarksville, Tenn., which is in charge of arrangements.
Gladys B. Divine
Gladys B. Divine, 86, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 25, 1917, she was a retired school teacher for Muhlenberg County Board of Education. She was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and a member of First Baptist Church in Central City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoit Divine, and a great-grandson, Carter Tate Divine.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne L. Divine of Central City and Ralph Divine of Bagdad, Ky.; a daughter, Kay Eades of South Carrollton; six grandchildren, Kelly and Kevin Devine, Stephen and Brad Divine, Lori Tatum and Kyle Eades; three great-grandchildren, Lauren Jill Tatum, Hannah Kate Divine and William Nash Divine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., March 17 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.

James Robert “Dutch” Powell
SMYRNA, TENN. James Robert “Dutch” Powell, formerly of Louisville, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at his residence.
Born to the late John, Sr. and Margaret Powell, he attended Shawnee High School and played under coach George Sire.
Survivors include his wife, Dorris; three children, Jackie, Luke and Kaysha Powell, all of Smyrna; a sister, Margaret Baker; and four brothers, Junie, Ronald, Gordon and Ernest Powell, all of Louisville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 13 at Simeon Baptist Church with the Rev. Elgia Wells officiating. Burial followed in Mapleview Cemetery in Smyrna. Rucker Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro, Tenn. was in charge of arrangements.
Lucy Lorene Shelton
DRAKESBORO Lucy Lorene Shelton, 80, died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at the residence of Keith and Brenda DeArmond in Belton.
Born in Butler County, July 3, 1923, she was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include five sons, Osby Wayne Shelton of Dunmor, Wendell Ward Shelton of Belton, James Bruce Shelton, Kenneth Earl Shelton and David Shelton, all of Drakesboro; three daughters, Patsy Ann English of Beech Creek, Betty Lois Barber of Drakesboro and Brenda Faye DeArmond of Belton; 44 grandchildren; and 71 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 13 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. T.H. Davis officiating. Burial followed in Hope Cemetery in Dunmor.
Mary Belle Baird
GREENVILLE Mary Belle Baird, 87, died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several days of illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 15, 1916, to the late William Edwin Smith and Winnie Eades Smith, she was a member of Greenville First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.P. Baird.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice (Harry) Tate of Franklin; two grandchildren, Tracy Tate Adkins of San Diego, Calif. and Leslie (Kenneth) Kann of Dayton, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Elly Kann of Dayton, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 13 from Greenville First Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Weekley and the Rev. Gary McAbee officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
