KIRKMANSVILLE - John Carley Johnston, 89, of Kirkmansville, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Health System following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 2, 1914 in Todd County, the son of Henry Herman Johnston and Nettie Walker Johnston, he was a farmer and a member of Lone Star General Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He taught singing schools and sang with the Kirkmansville Quartet for 35 years. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lou Wolfe in 2001.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katie Johnston of Kirkmansville; three daughters, Dorothy Boggess and Elnora Sherrod, both of Greenville, and Sandra Carringer of Apex, N.C.; three sons, Wayne Johnston of Gastonia, N.C., Carl Johnston of Elkton and Tommy Groves of Hopkinsville; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; and one nephew, Billy Gene Johnston of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, 2003, at Lone Star General Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Shanks officiating. Burial followed in Lone Star Cemetery in Weir. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
William Wright “Bill” Sharp
William Wright “Bill” Sharp, 68, of Central City, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Born Sept. 9, 1934 in Muhlenberg County, he was retired from Arch Minerals Coal Co., Ayrgem Mine, as a maintenance superintendent. He was a member of Nelson Creek Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a trustee. He attended Martwick Community School, graduated from Rockport High School and was a graduate of Bowling Green Trade School. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 1701 of Owensboro. He was also a member of U.M.W.A., Local Union 1605, a member of Central Masonic Lodge #673 and was a 32 degree mason. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Doy Wright Sharp.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Oleda Jane Mayhugh Sharp; one son, William “Billy” Ray (Sherry) Sharp of Central City; one daughter, Lana Suzanne Sharp (Phillip) Crowder of Nashville; one grandson, William Grant Sharp of Bowling Green; one granddaughter, Jane Anne Crowder of Nashville; two step grandchildren, Jai and Rachel Crowder of Nashville; one brother, Preston Ray Sharp of Blountville, Tenn.; one sister, Judy Sharp Bond of Blountville, Tenn. and one aunt, Ruby Sharp of Owensboro.
A Masonic service was held Thursday, March 6, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, also at Tucker Funeral Home. with the Revs. Donnie Wilkins, Jimmie Fuller, Jeff Noffsinger and Leroy Reardon officiating. Burial followed in Nelson Creek Cemetery in Central City. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Nelson Creek Church Cemetery Fund. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Jackie Wyatt Holmes
Jackie Wyatt Holmes, infant son of Kenneth Roy Holmes II and Geraldine Jessup Somone, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
He is survived by his father, Kenneth Roy Holmes II, of Central City; his mother, Geraldine Jessup Somone of Greenville; one brother, Kenneth Roy Holmes III of Central City; grandparents, Gerald and Sun Yung Jessup of Greenville, Kenneth Roy Holmes Sr. of Owensboro and Rutha Nell Cunningham of Central City; and great-grandparent, Gertrude Dunning of South Carrollton.
Graveside services and burial were held Saturday, March 8, at Vernal Grove Cemetery in Depoy with the Rev. Jerry Eades officiating. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of arrangements.
Sandra Kay Jones
OWENSBORO - Sandra Kay Jones, 52, of Owensboro, formerly of Nelson Creek, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born Sept. 2, 1950 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Morgan of Central City and Theresa Baskerville of Drakesboro; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Jamie Austin of Nelson Creek and Shirley McDonald of Owensboro.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Revs. Tim Adcock and Chris Odle officiating. Burial followed in Nelson Creek Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Beulah Mae Smith
DEPOY - Beulah Mae Smith, 80, of Depoy, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital Emergency Room.
Born April 11, 1922, the daughter of Otway Woodall and Ethel Vincent Woodall, she was a member of Richardson’s Chapel General Baptist Church and had worked for a short time as a clerk at a local restaurant.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Smith of Depoy; one daughter, Jean Everett of Nelson Creek; two sons, Leon Smith of Beechmont and Donald R. Smith of Greenville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Catherine Waller of Bremen.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 2, 2003 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Revs. T. H. Davis and Terry Groves officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Depoy. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Paul M. Henson Sr.
GREENVILLE - Paul M. Henson Sr., 90, of Greenville, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Graduating from Greenville High School in 1931, he was previously a manager of the Greenville Water Works, was a former president of the Greenville Kiwanis Club and was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church. He worked many years for IW Dupont Company which sent him to Hanford, Washington to work on the “Manhattan Project”. He received honors from the United States government for his work on the construction of the atomic bomb which ultimately led to the end of World War II. He also served as a member of President Kennedy’s Executive National Defense Board during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul M. Henson Jr. in 1998.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nancy Kimmel Henson of Greenville; one son, Thomas Kimmel Henson of Greenville; one daughter, Martha L. Murray of Shawnee, Okla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 9, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Brent Waltrip officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Norma Rose Whitfield
GREENVILLE - Norma Rose Whitfield, 83, of Greenville, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at her residence.
Born Feb. 3, 1920 in Muhlenberg County, the twin daughter of Willie Rose and Mattie Rolley Rose, she retired from Belle Meade Nursing Home where she worked as a social worker. She was a member of Powderly United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Whitfield in 1971 and a sister, Rebecca N. Hill in 2002.
She is survived by two stepsons, Gary Whitfield of Crofton and Timothy Whitfield of Graham; one brother, Bob Rose of Graham; and four sisters, Leona Bard of Greenville, Lois Thomas of Central City, Arna Oates and Ruth Vincent, both of Graham.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Revs. Bill Evitts and Carl Dugger officiating. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Green River Hospice. Burial followed in Unity Cemetery in Graham. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Velma Jean Knight
DRAKESBORO - Velma Jean Knight, 73, of Drakesboro, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born Oct. 12, 1929 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith.
She is survived by three brothers, Levon Knight and Jerry Knight, both of Drakesboro and Bobbie Knight of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. George Stevens officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery. Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Gayle Hall
ELKTON - Gayle Hall, 74, of Elkton, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at the Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville, Tenn. after an illness.
Born April 4, 1928 in Pontiac, Mich., the daughter of the late Leonard E. and Mary Lee Keeling Cartwright, she was a homemaker and a member of the Elkton Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Rudolph C. Hall Sr. of Elkton; one son, Rudy Hall of Elkton; one daughter, Carol Gray of Trenton, Ky.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, at Elkton Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Tracy officiating. Burial followed in the Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kentucky Baptist Childrens Home, Elkton Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc. Eula Mae Todd
POWDERLY - Eula Mae Todd, 92, of Powderly, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born Sept. 7, 1910 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a member of Mercer Baptist Church in Powderly. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Riley; second husband, Franklin T. Todd; one son, John Wayne Riley; and one daughter, Jonell Riley.
She is survived by one son, Earl Riley, Jr. of Hammond, Ind.; two daughters, Helen Armour of Powderly and Barbara Heifner of Pleasant Ridge, Ky.; nine step-sons, Jim Todd of Henderson, Paul Todd of Central City, Ben Todd, Dan Todd, Taylor Todd, Tom Todd, Fred Todd, Carl Todd and Mack Todd, all of Evansville, Ind.; two step-daughters, Ruth “Tuzie” Hinton of Evansville and Sue Buxton of Henderson; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alta Garrett of Central City.

James Willis Piper
BELTON - James Willis Piper, 79, of Belton, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born June 24, 1923 in Muhlenberg County, he was self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Brumley Piper; eight sons, Rickey L. Piper of Henderson, Gary W. Piper of Browder, Dale L. Piper, Dennis G. Piper and Brian K. Piper, all of Belton, Terry W. Piper of Madisonville, James G. Piper and Larry W. Piper, both of Owensboro; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Garlan Piper, Jerry Piper and Doyle Piper, all of Greenville, Donald Piper of Indianapolis, Ind.; Bobby Piper of Sacramento and Clyde Piper of Madisonville; four sisters, Lily Ann Bowen and Betty Nell Dino, both of Central City, Evelyn Devine of South Carrollton and Mildred Scott of Crofton; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 5 p.m. at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 12, at 11 a.m., also at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with Mr. Darrell Puryear officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Penrod. Birdie Brown
ELKTON - Birdie Brown, 86, of Elkton, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at the Hearthstone Place in Elkton after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 16, 1916 in Todd County, the daughter of Issac Henry Mayes and Bertha Marie Joines Mayes, she was a homemaker and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vertner Brown.
She is survived by one son, Glen Lear of Belton; one grandson, Steve Lear of Belton; two great-grandchildren, Scott and Amanda Lear; three stepsons, Chester Brown of Elkton, Larry Brown of Greenville and Kenneth Brown of Evansville, Ind.; three stepdaughters, Evealean Sweeney of Elkton, Eva Mae Lear of Greenville and Ima Nell Brown of Morgantown, Ky.; two brothers, Frankie Mayes of Lewisburg and Sammy Mayes of Clifty, Ky.; three sisters, Gertie Mayes and Nellie Buckman, both of Elkton and Elgie Sweeney of Clifty.

Charles T. “Charlie” Whitehouse
Charles T. “Charlie” Whitehouse, 84, of Central City, formerly of Hassville Hammond, Ind., died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born April 13, 1918 in Muhlenberg County, he was a construction worker and was a member of IBEW Local 697 in Hammond. He was a member of New Testament Christian Church in Central City. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by one son, Charles David Whitehouse of Cheserton, Ind.; one daughter, Carrie Sue Brindisi of Valpariaso, Ind.; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 12, at 11 a.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Revs. R. D. Mize and George Carman officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
James G. Bandy
BEAVER DAM - James G. Bandy, 77, of Beaver Dam, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at his residence.
Born April 27, 1925 in Greenville, he was a millwright worker at the Lorillard Tobacco Co. He was a member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby Eugene Bandy and Bessie Bandy; one son, Gary Bandy in 1993; and one great-grandchild, Allison Danielle Mastacola in 2001.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wanda Earl Bandy of Beaver Dam; one son, Larry Bandy of Louisville; one daughter, Cathy Daugherty of Beaver Dam; three brothers, Harold B. Bandy of Nortonville, Adrian Bandy and Morris Bandy, both of Greenville; one sister, Shirley Gardner of Greenville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with Mr. J. F. Dancer officiating. Interment followed in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Greenville. Danks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
