ELKTON Girtie Mayes, 87, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Hearthstone Place in Elkton.
Born in Todd County, Aug. 16, 1916, to the late Issaac Henry Mayes and Bertha Marie Joines Mayes, she was a housekeeper and homemaker and a member of New Harmony General Baptist Church in Clifty. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gracie Lear and Birdie Brown.
Survivors include two sisters, Elgie Sweeney of Clifty and Nellie Buckman of Elkton; two brothers, Frankie Mayes of Lewisburg and Sammy Mayes of Clifty; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 5 at New Harmony General Baptist Church in Clifty with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney and the Rev. Arno Krantz officiating. Burial followed in the New Harmony Cemetery in Clifty. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Otis Webb
DENTON, TEXAS Otis Webb, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at Denton Community Hospital in Denton, Texas.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 13, 1920, to the late Sylvester Webb and Marie (Pyle) Webb, he was a member of the Church of Christ and Boy Scouts of America. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Louise (McElwain) Webb; a son, James O. Webb of Denton, Texas; two sisters, Betty Jo Sears of Evansville, Ind. and Marie Gary of Central City; a brother, Bobby Webb of Powderly; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 5 at Price Funeral Home, Inc. in Lewisburg with James Webb officiating. Burial followed in Hortons Chapel Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.
Harold Edwin Wilcox
Harold Edwin Wilcox, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 14, 1922, he was retired from South Central Bell Telephone Company and was a member of the Central City First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Wilcox in 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma (Bates) Wilcox of Central City; a son, Walter Wilcox of Central City; two daughters, Linda Wilcox Hunt of Paducah and Doris (J.W.) Robertson of Greenville; a brother, Tom Wilcox of Owensboro; a sister, Vivian Davis of Paducah; and three grandchildren, Jenifer Hunt, Josh Hunt and Jarrod Robertson.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Feb. 7 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Nellie Baynes Whitaker
BELTON Nellie Baynes Whitaker, 65, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 26, 1938, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Bruce Whitaker Vincent of Bremen, Tony Whitaker and Wendell Whitaker, Jr., both of Belton; two daughters, Charlotte McElvain of Greenville and Sandy Eaves of Belton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Feb. 5 at Forest Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Ernest Bean officiating. Burial followed in Forest Oak Cemetery.
Josie Lucille Pendley Crick
GREENVILLE Josie Lucille Pendley Crick, 81, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 11, 1922, to the late Lester Eldon Pendley and Mary Magdalene McPherson Pendley, she was a member of Carter Creek Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Raymond Lewis Crick; four daughters, Brenda Day of Chesterton, Ind., Patty Rust of Greenville, Beckie Penrod of Powderly and Marty Woosley of Morgantown; a sister, Faye Newman of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 8 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Wilkins officiating. Burial followed in Carter Creek Cemetery in Greenville.
George R. Rash
YUMA, ARIZ. George R. Rash, 65, formerly of Central City, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at his residence in Yuma, Ariz.
Born in Herrin, Ill., May 30, 1938, to Agatha and Phyllis McDowell Rash, he was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired civil service employee in both Georgia and Yuma, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his father and three uncles.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Rash; two sons, 1st Lt. George R. Rash of Fort Lewis, Washington and Richard Soliger of Yuma, Ariz; three daughters, Lea Ann Haben of Henderson, Nev.; Lorie Martin of Hugoton, Kan. and Georgianna Dotson of Roseville, Calif.; his mother, Phyllis Dill of Central City; two aunts; an uncle; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Feb. 7 at Sunset Vista Funeral Home in Yuma, Ariz. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery on Feb. 11.
Wanda Mae Webster Bates
FOUNTAINTOWN, IND. Wanda Mae Webster Bates, 43, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 13, 1960, the daughter of Ray and Ollie Mae Webster. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Ann Newman in 1987 and grandparents, Delbert and Eula Mae Hardison.
Survivors include her daughter, Nicole Rhea Bates of Fountaintown, Ind.; a very special cousin, Clifford Lee Hardison of Fountaintown, Ind.; and two nephews, Dewayne and Timmy Newman, both of Greenville.
There was no visitation or funeral service.
Cynthia Joan Rees
GREENVILLE Cynthia Joan Rees, 27, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 in the Maple Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 29, 1976, to Rick Parker and Joyce Sexton Stacy, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Dean Rees of Greenville; three sons, Mark Allen Stacy and Nathan Stacy, both of Hazard, Ky. and Timothy Rees of Greenville; a daughter, Katelynn Marie Rees of Greenville; her father, Rick Parker of Jacksonville, Fla.; her mother, Joyce Sexton Stacy of Clarksville, Tenn.; a brother, Shawn Parker of Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister, Crystal Skinhorn of Clarksville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 9 from Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville with the Rev. Allen Knight officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Billy Ray Jones
GREENVILLE Billy Ray Jones, 47, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at his residence.
Born in McLean County, July 20, 1956, he was a construction worker and a 20-year member of the National Guard.
Survivors include his caregiver, Lynn Jones; a son, Corey Jones of South Carrollton; two daughters, Tracey Dutton of White Plains and Tonia Jones of South Carrollton; his mother, Margaret Jones; three brothers, Jerry Jones of Greenville, Mike Jones of Madisonville and Randal Jones of Louisville; a sister, Mary Rouch of North Carolina; a half brother, Danny McDonald of Powderly; a half sister, Judy Wiley of Madisonville; and three grandchildren.
Private funeral services were held. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Lucy Dukes Garrett
BOYTON BEACH, FLA. Mary Lucy Dukes Garrett, 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 in the Ridge Terrace Health Center in Boyton Beach, Fla. after a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 8, 1913, to the late Eligah Bennett Dukes and Birtie Johnson Dukes, she managed a drycleaners until she retired and was of the Church of Christ faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Annett Garrett Keilson of Boyton Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 11 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Ray Gann officiating. Burial will follow in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir.
Leslie Harold Johnson
GREENVILLE ? Leslie Harold Johnson, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 in Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 21, 1924, to the late Boye Johnson and Bertie Mundy Johnson, he was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Greenville. He was retired from AYR Gem Coal Company as a United Mine Worker of America coal miner.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bernice Hill Johnson; a daughter, Sharon (Bennie) VanHooser of Greenville; two sisters, Emma Wells and Peggy McGehee, both of Greenville; two grandchildren, Scott (Phyllis) Eaves of Bowling Green and Leslie (Michael) Tinsley of Greenville; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Eaves, Mitchell Eaves, Lilly Tinsley and Logan Tinsley; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at First Baptist Church in Greenville with Dr. Charles Midkiff, the Rev. Gary McAbee and the Rev. Rob Gwaltney officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the First Baptist Christian Life Center in Greenville.
Jackie McKinney
Jackie McKinney, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 4, 1926 to the late Carl and Mary McKinney, he was a retired union coal miner and a member of Richardson’s Chapel General Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Bremen Masonic Lodge and the United Mine Workers of America. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ricky and Danny McKinney; four brothers, Richard, Bernice, George and Ernest McKinney and three sisters, Carlene Dukes, Eura Jackson and Carrie McKinney.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Wilson McKinney; two sons, Tim McKinney and Rob McKinney, both of Central City; three brothers, Bill McKinney of Lewisburg, Paul McKinney of Drakesboro and John McKinney of Scottsville; three sisters, Imogene Gardner of Greenville, Eunice Kissinger of Elbertfelt, Ind. and Mary Penrod of Ohio; three grandchildren, Brandon, Cheyenne and Brittany; one great-grandchild, Jarred; a daughter-in-law, Brandi McKinney and several nieces and nephews.

Colin K. Shourds
ROCKPORT, IND. ? Colin K. Shourds, 11, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
Born in Evansville April 29, 1993, the son of Jason and Tammy (Dukes) Shourds, he was a member of First Christian Church in Newburgh, Ind. and attended sixth grade at South Spencer Middle School in Reo, Ind.
Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Ken and Carol Shourds of Rockport and Bro. Wayne and Shirley Dukes of Beechmont and two sisters, Kerrigan and Kylie Shourds at home.
Funeral services were held at 10 am. Jan. 28 at First Christian Church in Newburgh with Pastor Mike Claypool and Pastor Brad Ferris officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh Cemetery in Rockport. Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, Ind. was in charge of arrangements.
Theodore Roosevelt Chappell
GREENVILLE ? Theodore Roosevelt Chappell, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 in Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 20, 1923, he was a member of Greens Chapel General Baptist Church and a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Chappell in 1991 and Jerald Chappell in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Chappell; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two daughters-in-law, Glodean Cottongim of Greenville and Judy C. Lear of White Plains.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Greens Chapel Cemetery in Greenville.
Billy Dean Phillips
SACRAMENTO ? Billy Dean Phillips, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 in Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born in McLean County Aug. 24, 1934, he was a member of Sacramento Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a farmer.
Survivors include several cousins.
