LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Marty Wayne “Levi” Garrett, 44, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Beechmont, died Feb. 26, 2003, at ELA Star Community Hospital in Los Angeles.
Born Feb. 3, 1959 in Greenville, he was a building contractor and a member of Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Venyard Garrett.
He is survived by his mother, Pat Carver Jernigan of Greenville; three brothers, Sandy Garrett and Rusty Jernigan, both of Greenville, and Curt Garrett of Belton; two sisters, Wendy McElvain of Belton and Joann Garrett of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday, March 2, at Nebo Cemetery near Greenville with the Rev. Mitchell Sublett officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Jane Ashworth
BELTON - Mary Jane Ashworth, 83, of Belton, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born Feb. 7, 1920 in Adamsville, Ala., she was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Gloria Day of Belton, Barbara Moore and Kay Ashworth, both of Beechmont; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, James Reynolds of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; and one sister, Evelyn Kimbrel of Docena, Ala.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 4, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home, beginning at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 5, at 2 p.m, also at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Day officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Billy Darrell Dukes
OAK RIDGE, TENN. - Billy Darrell Dukes, 63, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at his residence.
Born April 19, 1939 in Drakesboro, he had lived and worked in Hammond, Ind. for 17 years and later worked at Armstrong Rubber Company in Clinton, Tenn. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and was privileged to serve as the lead honor guard for the funeral of General Douglas McArthur. He enjoyed gardening, visiting family and doing special things for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Dukes; parents, Myrtle and Joel Dukes; sister, Jenny Knight; and brother, E. J. Dukes.
He is survived by four daughters, Rebecca Stok and Brenda Dukes, both of Highland, Ind., Carolyn Burton (Robert) of Griffith, Ind. and Lisa Dukes of Drakesboro; one stepson, Jerry (Bonita) Wilcox of Rockwood, Tenn.; two brothers, Tommy (Carol) Dukes and Vernon Richardson, both of Drakesboro; two sisters, Dorothy Barber of Drakesboro and Pauline Dodd of Tyler, Texas; seven grandchildren, including Joshua and Jody Ferguson of Drakesboro and several nieces, nephews and extended family in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Funeral services were held at Richardson Chapel Church in Drakesboro on March 3. Interment followed at Ebenezer Cemetery. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City, Tenn. was in charge of all arrangements.
Troy Lehman Harris
SHARON GROVE - Troy Lehman Harris, 60, of Sharon Grove, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1942 in Todd County, the son of Margaret Stinson Harris and the late Ovie Harris, he was a land surveyor and a member of Living Word Church in Adairville, Ky. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Airforce.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Edna Rainwaters Harris of Sharon Grove; three sons, Steven Harris of Bowling Green, Jeffrey Harris of Russellville and Eric Harris of Sharon Grove; one brother, Nelson Harris of Lewisburg; one sister, Euleta Sweeney of Sharon Grove and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 2, at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Revs. William Cowan, Mike Humble and John Ford officiating. Burial followed in Gant Cemetery in Sharon Grove. Latham Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Seth Talbott Botts, Jr.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Seth Talbott Botts, Jr., 80, of Charlotte N. C., died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Hunter Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte.
Born Dec. 28, 1922 in Winchester, Ky., he graduated from The University of Kentucky College of Engineering. He worked for Kentucky Utilities as a power plant superintendent and fuel procurement manager until his retirement. He was a member of Southern Hills United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He loved his family, his dogs, Kentucky football, Kentucky basketball, tailgating, the beach, gardening, dancing and traveling.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Botts of Lexington and Dr. Susan Botts (Dr. Richard) Coe; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1, at W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland with the Rev. Dennis Burrows officiating. Burial followed in Lexington Cemetery. Billy Gene Zellers
Billy Gene Zellers, 33, of Central City, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at his residence.
Born March 9, 1969 in Valparaiso, Ind., he was a welder.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lee (Mefford) Zellers; mother, Eva Marie Veal of Powderly; stepfather, Danny Veal of Powderly; two sisters, Nevina Zellers of Powderly and Natalie Zellers of Pasedena, Texas; and five brothers, David Zellers of Bowling Green, Leo Zellers of Powderly, Robert Zellers, Joey Zellers and Timmy Zellers, all of Pasedena, Texas.

Martha Eades McClure
GARDEN GROVE, CALIF. - Martha Eades McClure, 80, of Garden Grove, formerly of Central City, died Feb. 7, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Santa Ana, Calif.
Born May 19, 1922 in Central City, the daughter of Herbert Leslie and Ida Fentress Eades, she graduated from Central City High School in 1940 and attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She married Commander McClure of the U.S. Navy on June 12, 1943. She was a gourmet cook, an excellent bridge player and an avid golfer. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Bob.
She is survived by three daughters, Leslie Metzger, Marty Porter and Beth Porter; a daughter-in-law, Linda McClure of McLean County; two sisters, Jane Love and Betsy Gilbreath; one brother, Herbert “Bud” Eades; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 11 at Calvary Church in Santa Ana, Calif.
Anna Maude Drury
GREENVILLE - Anna Maude Drury, 88, of Greenville, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville after a lengthy illness.
Born June 24, 1914 in Muhlenberg County, the daughter of Edgar Jackson Lyons and Essie Falena Jessup Lyons, she was a member of Graham Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Drury in 1992; two daughters, Jane Skimehorn in 1999 and Ramona Drury in 1943; a granddaughter in 1992 and great-grandson in 1987.
She is survived by four sons, Charles Drury and Buddy Drury, both of Greenville, Paul Drury and Freddie Drury, both of Graham; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carrie Dukes of Greenville; and four brothers, J. E. Lyons of Chincoteague, Va., Billy Lyons, Bobby Lyons and David Lyons, all of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Tommy Drury officiating. Burial followed in Unity Cemetery in Graham. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charles William Richmond
GREENVILLE - Charles William Richmond, 68, of Greenville, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at his residence in Greenville.
Born June 4, 1934 in Warren County, the son of Grace Simpson Hatcher and William Mitchell Richmond, he was a member of Cadiz Church of Christ. He had worked as a truck driver for Whitney Transport.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy A. Richmond of Greenville; two daughters, Cindy Mooneyhan of Bowling Green and Scarlett Sexton of Cadiz; six sons, Chuck Richmond and Robbie Richmond, both of Bowling Green, David Richmond of Butler County, Tony Richmond of Madisonville, Benji Prunty of Jenkins, Ky. and Eddie Prunty of Greenville; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 4, at J. C. Kirby & Son Broadway Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green, from 2 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 1 p.m., also at J. C. Kirby & Son Broadway Funeral Chapel. J. C. Kirby & Son is in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Meldon Hinton
GREENVILLE - Vernon Meldon Hinton, 84, of Greenville, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born Aug. 4, 1918 in Morganfield, the son of Vernon More Hinton and Gertrude Tudor Hinton, he was of the Methodist faith. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Swift Meat Packing Company in 1980 after 42 years as plant manager in Evansville, Ind. and Rochelle, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Helen Louise Hinton in 1999.
He is survived by one daughter, Peggy Moore of Powderly; two grandsons, Mike Moore of Newburgh, Ind. and Mark Moore of Murray, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Moore, Michael Moore and Hannah Moore; and one brother, Keith Hinton of Evansville.
Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 31, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly with the Rev. Clifford Lovell officiating. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Almeda Haynes Brizendine
GREENVILLE - Almeda Haynes Brizendine, 82, of Greenville, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Bowling Green Medical Center during open heart surgery.
Born Sept. 17, 1920, the daughter of Josiah Haynes and Virgie Mae Crowe Haynes of Owensboro, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. She graduated from Owensboro High School in 1939 and Western State Teachers College in 1943. While a student at Western, she was selected as Talisman Queen in 1941, Campus Queen in 1942 and Campus Favorite in 1943.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thomas S. Brizendine of Greenville; one daughter, Nell B. Edwards of Bowling Green; and two granddaughters, Carrie Edwards and Sara Edwards, both of Bowling Green.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Gene Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Jessie Ray Brewer
HOPKINSVILLE - Jessie Ray Brewer, 90, of Hopkinsville, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.
Born Aug. 30, 1912 in Todd County, Ky., the son of the late Thomas Henry Brewer and Laura Reed Brewer, he was a farmer and a member of the Lake View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Johnny Ray Sharbnow.
He is survived by his wife, Verlie M. Brewer of Hopkinsville; one son, Norris Ray Brewer of Dalton, Ga.; two daughters, Eva Louise Sharbnow of Taylor, Mich. and Gloria Rowe of Floral City, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, at Lake View Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Wilhite and Russ Stallons officiating. Burial followed in Tabernacle Cemetery. Latham Funeral Home in Elkton was in charge of arrangements.
Lillian Pearline McElvain
Lillian Pearline McElvain, 88, of Central City, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 28, 1914 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
She is survived by seven sons, Earl Berkley of Myrtle Beach, S.C., James Berkley of Henderson, Louis Berkley of St. Jacob, Ill., William Berkley of Evansville, Darrel Berkley of Memphis, Tenn. Larry Berkley of Atlanta, Ga. and Baxter Berkley of Eddyville, Ky.; three daughters, Louise Keeling and Wanda Harris, both of Central City, and Mary Jo Hopkins of Madisonville; one sister, Myrtle Warner of Calhoun and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 2, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Bill Penrod officiating. Burial followed in Brushey Fork Cemetery in McLean County. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Carter Tate Divine
OWENSBORO - Carter Tate Divine, two months, of Owensboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
He is survived by his parents, Steve and Shannon Divine of Owensboro; his sister, Hannah Kate Divine; his grandparents, Curtis Carter and Ginger Carter of Owensboro and Wayne and Helen Divine of Central City; his great-grandparents, Bob Howe and Doris Howe of Owensboro and Gladys Divine of Central City; three aunts; two uncles and three cousins.
Services were private. Burial was in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
