GREENVILLE - Beverly Jean Loveless, 64, of Greenville, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1938 in Petersburg, Ind., the daughter of George Goodpasture and Edith Miley Goodpasture, she was a member of Roland Memorial Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Miller, in 2000.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Wayne Loveless of Greenville; one daughter, Kathy Orton of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Bryan Orton, Michael Orton, Jason Orton and Jennifer Miller; two sisters, Helen Newkirk of Petersburg, Ind. and Rosemary Carr of Phoenix, Ariz.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 31, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Revs. Carl Nelson and James Doyel officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. In lieu of flowers, donations may take the form of contributions to Roland Memorial Baptist Church. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rufus Burch
BREMEN - Rufus Burch, 87, of Bremen, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Sparks Nursing Center in Central City.
Born Oct. 23, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired coal miner and member of UMWA local 1092, IBEW local 1701 and Masonic Lodge #596 in Bremen. He was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church and a veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Ella (Pollard) Burch; three sisters, Viola Harris, Altha White and Zelpha Key; two brothers, Byron Burch and Dennie Burch; and one grandson, Allen Neal.
He is survived by four sons, Richard (Kay) Burch and Buddy (Sue) Burch, both of Central City, Jerry Burch of Greenville, and Wayne (Karen) Burch of Hodgensville; three daughters, Lisa Burch (Keith) Sherman of Bremen, Sherry (Brett) Ude of Illinois and Betty (Dan) Needham of Florida; 22 grandchildren, Drue Rolley, Dustin Howell, Michael Burch and Jamie Burch, all of Bremen, Jesse Ude and Misty McClure of Illinois, Marsha Burch, Melissa Burch and Michelle Armour of Greenville, Mandy Howard of Lexington, Keith, Josh and Rachel Sherman of Nortonville, Rodney and Jason Burch of Central City, Carla King and Tori York of Owensboro, Rhonda Hunter and Kim Esterle of Louisville, David Neal of Tennessee and Todd Burch of California; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Revs. Dan Yeager and Gary Taylor officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Madisonville, Ky. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Elsie Rickard
SACRAMENTO - Elsie Rickard, 87, of Sacramento, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Hospital.
Born Feb. 3, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a member of Towers Chapel United Methodist Church in Stringtown. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Thurman Rickard in December 1988.
She is survived by one son, Carol W. (Patricia) Rickard of Sacramento; two granddaughters, Carol Ann Rickard and Gail Rickard, both of Bremen; two great-grandchildren, Timothy and Bethany Antle, both of Bremen; and one sister, Helen Bryant of Springfield, Ill.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. Jessie Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Free Union Cemetery in McLean County. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Brack Lee Sweeney
CLIFTY - Brack Lee Sweeney, 73, of Clifty, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the McCurdy Health Care Center in Evansville, Ind. after a short illness.
Born July 29, 1929 in Todd County, the son of William Andrew Sweeney and Ora Ethel Mayes Sweeney, he was retired from City Auto Salvage in Hopkinsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ewing Sweeney in 1997 and son, Jerry Lee Sweeney in 1995.
He is survived by three sons, Michael Lee Sweeney and James Allen Sweeney, both of Evansville and Donald Owen Sweeney of Baskett, Ky.; two daughters, Veda Mae Ball of Evansville and Sandra Lee Dawson of Hopkinsville; 10 grandchildren;10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Sweeney of Clarksville, Tenn., Ferry Sweeney of Louisville, Ky. and Andrew Sweeney of Brier, Washington; and four sisters, Velura McIntosh of Fort Worth, Texas, Ivy Sheppard of Benning, Calif., Mae Turner of Clarksville and Wanda Goodson of Salem, Ala.

POWDERLY - Lindell Brown, 84, of Powderly, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born June 15, 1918 in Muhlenberg County, he was a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Mary Haynes Brown; one daughter, Mary Elaine Rogers of Lexington, Va.; two grandchildren; four sisters, Dixie Belle Crick and Janie Mae Steele, both of Powderly, Mary Frances Goottee of Central City and Agnes Inez Dugger of Gary, Ind.

Myrtie Phillips
TODD COUNTY - Myrtie Phillips, 90, of the Claymour Community in Todd County, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Hearthstone Place in Elkton of natural causes.
Born Feb. 6, 1912 in Todd County, the daughter of the late Raymond Greenfield and Litha Elizabeth Hankins Greenfield, she was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman M. Phillips in 1987; one son, Harold Phillips in 2002; and two brothers, Alton Greenfield and Marvin Greenfield.
She is survived by two sons, Billy Phillips of Hopkinsville and Rev. Doug Phillips of Bowling Green; two brothers, Ira Greenfield of Hopkinsville and Earl Greenfield of Elkton; two sisters, Mallye Davis of Hopkinsville and Mable Dawson of Elkton; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Revs. Travis Keltner and Marty Heltsley officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Wilma Jean Phillips Richerson
GREENVILLE - Wilma Jean Phillips Richerson, 66, of Greenville, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 21, 1936 in Breckinridge County, the daughter of Amiel Edward Phillips and Lorean Fuqua Phillips, she was a member of Second Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Boss Richerson in 1995.
She is survived by one sister, Donna Simmons of Greenville; three brothers, Denver Phillips and George Phillips, both of Fordsville, Ky. and Mike Phillips of Central City; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 4, 5 - 7 p.m., at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will also be Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Gary’s Funeral Home at 7 p.m. with Dr. Ray England officiating. Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Brookside Cemetery in Campbellsville, Ky. Gary’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Stella Mae Baker
ADAIRVILLE, KY - Stella Mae Baker, 79, of Adairville, Ky., died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at her residence.
Born March 31, 1923 in Penrod, Ky., the daughter of Elias Benjamin Mallory and Mary Josephine Luckett Mallory, she was a member of Union Ridge Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Baker, Jr. in 1995.
She is survived by three sons, Michael Baker and Ferrantie Baker, both of Adairville and Daniel Baker, Sr., of Tennessee Ridge, Tenn.; one daughter, Melessia Thresher of Belton; six grandchildren, Tawnya Arnold, Stephanie Dakin, Priscilla DeArmond, Hope Carter, Jeremiah Thresher and Daniel Baker, Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Hunt of Mount Washington, Ky.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Gary’s Funeral Home at 9 a.m. and at Union Ridge Baptist Church, at 1 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 2 p.m., at Union Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Emma Jean Hunter Lanford Patton
LEXINGTON Emma Jean Hunter Lanford Patton, 85, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 at Tanbark Nursing Home in Lexington after a long illness.
Born in El Dorado, Ill., Feb. 23, 1918, she attended Greenville High School and Centre College in Danville. She was deeply involved in the First Presbyterian Church in both Greenville and Clarksville, Tenn. serving as a deacon and on numerous committees. She was an avid gardener and a member of the Clarksville Garden Club. She helped establish and was active in the “Grey Ladies” hospital volunteer program in Greenville. She was the epitome of a gracious Southern lady with the kindest of hearts and generosity of spirit. Most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be forever missed. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph W. Lanford and her second husband, Clyde Patton.
Survivors include a son, Wally (Karen) Lanford of Lexington; two daughters, Gail (Tom) McCauley of Greenville, S.C. and Deborah (David) Musser of Hurricane, W.V.; seven grandchildren, T.J. McCauley, Mary McCauley-Stiff, Matt McCauley, Joe Lanford, Annie Lanford, Jimmy Lanford and David Musser; and two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Stiff and Evan Stiff.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Jan. 30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville.

Gladys Marie (Ragan) Amos
Gladys “Bee” Marie (Ragan) Amos, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004.
Born Feb. 11, 1914 to Herschel and Pansy Ragan, she attended Calvary Baptist Church in Central City. She formerly co-owned and operated Amos Grocery and Café. She was a devoted wife and cherished mother and grandmother. She was a beautiful friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Clarence; her granddaughter, Erica Lynne Cornett; and two brothers, Paul Ragan and Buster Duncan.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence Edward (Edna) Amos of Newburgh, Ind. and Jerry Wayne (Sherrill) Amos of Beaver Dam; five daughters, Patricia (Earl) Denney of Bowling Green, Brenda (Bill) Nichols of Lexington; Joan McClellan of Powderly; Barbara (Eddie) Revlett of Bremen; Saundra (Danny) Cornett of Greenville; a sister, Lorilla Ragan (C.W.) Lewis “Shine” Richardson
RUSSELLVILLE Lewis “Shine” Richardson, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 in the Auburn Health Care Facility.
Born in Logan County, June 27, 1916, to the late William F. Richardson and Latimer Hines Richardson, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and owner of Shines Signs in Russellville. He was a member of the American Legion Post 29 in Russellville and the Logan County Fair Board. He was the coordinator of the Beech Creek reunion for 21 years and also the organizer of Logan County Little League Program in the 1950s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Mason Richardson.
Survivors include two brothers, Joe Morton Richardson of Greenville and Charles “Jack” Richardson of Russellville; two sisters, Sue Geisler of Russellville and Jean Richardson Grise of Lewisburg; and several nieces and nephews.

BEAVER DAM Bobby R. Garner, 56, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born in Muhlenberg County, he was retired from Green River Steel in Owensboro. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Bobby Ray Garner II.
Survivors include his mother, Hazel Garner of Central City; companion, Carol Baize; four brothers, Billy Gene Garner, Aaron Garner, Kevin Lee Garner and Steven Lynn Garner, all of Central City; six sisters, Connie Watkins Smith, Barbara Whitehouse, Mickie Rice, Karen Ward, and Kim Ward, all of Central City, and Phyllis Camplin of Beechmont; a son, Aaron Garner of Beaver Dam; a stepson, John Garner of North Carolina; a daughter, Ashley Garner of Beaver Dam; two stepdaughters, Misty Banes Garner of Beaver Dam and Tina Garner of Jonesboro, Ga.; and one step grandchild.

Brenda Sue Heflin
ELKTON Brenda Sue Heflin, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, July 10, 1953, to the late John Dillard Scott and Mary Katherine Johnson Scott, she was a homemaker and a member of the Elkton Baptist Church.
Survivors include her grandmother, Virgie Johnson of Hopkinsville; three brothers, Michael Scott of Hopkinsville, Danny Scott of Elkton and John Scott of Illinois; five sisters, Carolyn Rittenberry of Clarksville, Tenn., Judy Tilley, Peggy Heflin and Virgie Bennett, all of Elkton, and Gloria McGar of Pembroke; a son, Jamey Scott of Elkton; two daughters, Lindsey Heflin and Menyon Heflin, both of Elkton; and two grandchildren.

Tony Eugene Ashley, 54, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at his residence in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 23, 1949, to Betty and Bob Nofsinger, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the Central City First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Connor Eugene Ashley of Central City; a sister, Doris (Durward) Thomas of Central City; a brother, Terry (Christy) Nofsinger of Greenville; four nephews; and two great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Feb. 1 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.
