POWDERLY - Mildred Ione Mayes Durham, 71, of Powderly, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 31, 1931, she was the daughter of Henry Lewis Mayes and Berchie Pearl Clack Mayes. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of LeRoy, Ill. She was a farmer's wife and loved music. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Durham, in 1977, two sisters and one brother. She is survived by two sons, Justin (Nancy) Long of Belton and Phil (Gail) Long of Elkton; two grandsons, Jeremy Long and Jason Long, both of Elkton; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mae L. (Edgar) Long of Elliott, Ill.; one brother, Charles (Beth) Mayes of Elkton; several nieces and nephews; special cousin, Helen Jones of Elkton and special niece, Jennifer Braverman. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Clifty. LOUISVILLE - Charles N. Lewis, 81, of Louisville, formerly of Greenville, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at his residence in Louisville. Born Oct. 30, 1921 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of the Carlisle Baptist Church in Louisville and was a veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Cook Lewis on March 22, 2001. He is survived by one brother, Oscar Lewis, Jr. of Ironton, Ohio; three sisters, Ann Shelton and Mary G. Kirkham, both of Louisville and Ava Nell Schmidt of Greenville; several nieces and nephews; a special niece, Carolyn Maupin, who was his caregiver; and two cousins, Clarence Lewis of Central City and J. D. Lewis of Sacramento. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at Arch L. Heady Funeral Home in Louisville. Bert L. Anderson
OWENSBORO - Bert L. Anderson, 72, of Owensboro, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Health System. A native of Daviess County, he was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and horse racing. He was retired from Commonwealth Aluminum where he worked as a Soaking Pit Operator for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Anderson, in 1998. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Lynn Anderson of Owensboro and Stephen Allen Anderson of Philpot; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one sister, Daisy Watt of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial followed in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. James E. Tooley
MARION, ILL. - James E. Tooley, 89, of Marion died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. Born Nov. 7, 1913 in Central City to James W. and Martha (Gates) Tooley, he was a member and deacon of Marion Third Baptist Church and an educator at Southern Illinois University-Vocational Technical Institute Carterville Campus, retiring after many years. He received his Masters of Business Administration at Southern Illinois University. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. and a member and 32nd degree Mason at the Marion Masonic Lodge 89 AF & AM. He was a veteran, having served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre for 3-1/2 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Cox Tooley; brother, Charles Tooley and sister, Leola Litton. He is survived by three sons, Larry (Sara ) Tooley of Centralia, Ill.; Bill (Patti) Tooley of Johnston City, Ill. and John (Belinda) Tooley of Newburgh, Ind.; six grandchildren, Marianne Tooley, Laura Tooley, Vernell Thomas Tooley, Rebecca M. Tooley, Lisa Marie Tooley and Bethany Tooley; and three sisters, Stella Rice of Little Rock, Ark., Vonnie Leach of Hartford, Ill. and Lucille Brown of Pacific, Mo. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Third Baptist Church in Marion with the Rev. Glenn Sanders officiating. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery, Marion. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo McDonald Cundiff; two sons, Mitch (Teresa) Cundiff of Central City and Greg (Melissa) Cundiff of Warrior. Ala.; three grandchildren, Ashley Mariah Cundiff, Krista Lynn Cundiff and John Russell Cundiff; two brothers, Jerry Cundiff of Greenville and Rev. Oakie Bullock Ashby Tomes, 81, of Central City, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Health System. Born Sept. 1, 1921 in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of New Hope Church and was a retired from Cowden as a sewing machine operator. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James M. Ashby, and her second husband, Doff Tomes. She is survived by one son, James W. Ashby of Central City; one daughter, Joanna Ashby Geary of Central City; six grandchildren, James Geary, Ramona Ward, Leslie Jernigan, Shelia Mayes, Dee Ann Bryenton and Jeanie Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Born Oct. 28, 1949 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church in Central City and was a land developer. He is survived by his wife, Martine Decker Miller; two sons, John Martin Miller of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and James Miller of Belton, Ky.; one daughter, Angel Littlepage of Yewell, Fla.; three granddaughters; mother, Imogene Miller of Belton; one brother, Tim Miller of Beechmont; and one sister, Yvonne Blake of Greenville. Born in Muhlenberg County, she was retired from American Tobacco Co. and was a member of Auxiliary of VFW, AM-Vets and American Legion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Gilmore, on Oct. 14, 1994. She is survived by three sons, Russell Abrams of Owensboro, Greg Abrams of Louisville and Steve Abrams of Chatsworth, Ga.; four daughters, Judi Perkins of Hartland, Maine, Gail Mullen of Owensboro, Ruby Ellen Peacock and Keisha Harper, both of Philpot; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Ellen Payne of Central City. MADISONVILLE - Ruth Bandy Frederick, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004 at Regional Medial Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County, May 27, 1926, to the late Walter Bandy and Cora Tooley Bandy, she was a homemaker and a clerk for the A&P Grocery and SavRite Drugstore. She was a member of the Madisonville First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Moose Lodge #1306 Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Melvin L. Frederick; a daughter, Rayma Huffman of Princeton, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Melissa Merich of Pennsylvania; a son, Tommy Sisk of Madisonville; a stepson, Roger Frederick of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Joann Winstead of Madisonville and Sue Newman of Ripley, Tenn.; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

PENROD - Gus Rock Belcher, 98, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Butler County, Oct. 1, 1905, to the late Richard Calvin Belcher and Elnora Magdeline McCoy Belcher, he was a self-employed well driller and a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Baker Belcher; and two daughters, Gayla Ann Belcher Luckett and Debbie Jean Belcher English, both of Penrod; five grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Jan. 10 at Price Funeral Home, Inc. in Lewisburg with Tim Childs officiating. Burial followed in Hortons Chapel Cemetery.
Isabell Clarice Beadnell
HENDERSON - Isabell Clarice Beadnell, 75, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003 at Colonial Terrace Rest Home in Henderson following a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County to the late Homer and James Cash, she was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Beadnell; four brothers, O.B. Moore, Garnet Moore, Arnold Cash, and Will Ray Rust; and three sisters, Geneva Moore, Winnie Matheney and Minerva Stuart.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Burial was held at Mount Moriah Cemetery.
Roy Richmond
ELKTON - Roy Richmond, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, June 27, 1928, to the late Albert Roy Richmond and Martha Flora Agee Richmond, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of First Baptist Church in Haming, Ind.
Survivors include a sister, Elsie Pratt of Springfield, Tenn.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Jan. 9 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Jimmy Dukes officiating. Burial followed in Gants Cemetery.
Shelby Ewing Delk, Jr.
OWENSBORO - Shelby Ewing Delk, Jr., 73, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Bon Harbor in Owensboro.
Born in Logan County, Dec. 18, 1930, to the late Shelby Ewing Delk, Sr. and Onie Mae Shoemaker Delk, he was a self-employed farmer, a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include a sister, Flora Lee Hutchinson of Owensboro; a niece and three nephews.

Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 7, 1905, he was a retired farmer and a member of Leigh’s Chapel General Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Saddler Fortney; a son, Jerrold Fortney of Gallatin, Tenn.; a daughter, Sara Russell of Indianapolis, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Corene Richardson of Horse Cave; a sister, Mary Ellen Batsel of Lake Malone; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight great great-grandchildren.

ELKTON - Nancy Boyd Latham, 85, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at Hearthstone Place in Elkton of natural causes.
Born in Christian County, Jan. 3, 1919, to the late Forrest Boyd and Audrey Payne Boyd Kirkman, she was a past co-owner of Latham Funeral Home and a member of Elkton Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.P. “Putt” Latham in 1986 and her stepfather, R.T. Kirkman.
Survivors include a son, Robert M. Latham of Elkton; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born in Muhlenberg County in the Martwick community, Feb. 11, 1943, he was a lifelong auto body repairman and a member of the Drakesboro Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Fraze; two sons, Jeff Fraze of Central City and Donald Fraze of Montclair, Va.; a daughter, Patricia Rolley of Bremen; a stepson, Bobby Mosby of Nelson Creek; two stepdaughters, Lisa Sumner of Central City and Gloria Groves of Bremen; three brothers, Harold Fraze of Nelson Creek, Larry I. Fraze of Bremen and Clarence R. Fraze of Beaver Dam, Wis.; three sisters, Diane Fulton of Nelson Creek; Joyce Decono of Decatur, Ill. and Ruby Vick of Sparta, Tenn.; and 16 grandchildren.
