Mrs. Stephens was born in Central City, Kentucky on November 28, 1927 to the late Herschel Goodnight Tipton and Othie Gertrude Turner Tipton. She was a manager at Gateway Books and Cards located at Two Rivers Mall. She was a member of the Zebra Wives Club at Fort Campbell and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Charles S. Stephens of Clarksville, Tennessee; one son, Richard D. Stephens of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Amy L. Green of Nashville, Tennessee and Mary Beth Stephens of Clarksville; two sisters, Elnora Huff and Mildred Sampley both of Owensboro; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 15, 2002 at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Chapel with Reverend Billy Morefield officiating. Burial followed in the Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Ima Jean Miller
Drakesboro - Mrs. Ima Jean Miller, 71, of Drakesboro died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Mrs. Miller was born in Muhlenberg County on July 18, 1930. She was a retired cook at Drakesboro High School. She was a member of Drakesboro Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ezra Miller of Drakesboro; one son, Ronnie Miller of Greenville; one grandchild, Krystal Miller of Greenville; one brother, Leonard Eply of Drakesboro; and one half brother, George W. Mannhem of Michigan.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home with Reverend Estil Mayes officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Ebenezer.
Clifford Wells
Owensboro - Mr. Clifford Wells, 72, of Owensboro died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Mr. Wells was a Muhlenberg County native retired from General Motors as Chevrolet Division area service manager and Engineering Analysis Associates of Detroit. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Maverick Sunday school class, a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a Kentucky Colonel and collected antique cars.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Shirley Ann Melton Wells; one son, Robert Wells of Nashville; two daughters, Donna Flaspoehler of Owensboro and Dana Wells of Murray; one sister, Margaret Wiggins of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 18, 2002 at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro.

Mildred Rickard Thompson
Sacramento - Ms. Mildred Rickard Thompson, 77, of Sacramento died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System in Owensboro.
Ms. Thompson was born in McLean County on February 9, 1925. She was retired as a tube line operator at GE in Owensboro. She was a member of Sacramento United Methodist Church and class of Mary Sunday school. She was also a member of Eastern Star, former member of the Sacramento Town Board and recently worked in McLean County at the Help Office.
Survivors include one son, Terry Ray Thompson of Calhoun; one daughter, Iris Northern of Robbinsville, New Jersey; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Irene West of Calhoun, Margaret Eaton of Island and Juanita Cox of Louisville.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Tucker Memorial Funeral Chapel in Sacramento with Reverend Jesse Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Sacramento.

James Homer Maxberry
Naples, North Carolina - Mr. James Homer Maxberry, 86, of Naples, North Carolina died Sunday, March 17, 2002.
Mr. Maxberry was born in Muhlenberg County on July 2, 1916 to the late Coy and Julia Maxberry. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dimple Maxberry of Naples; two sisters, Clara M. Pogue of Browder and Jonell Mayes of Indianapolis, IN; three brothers, Howard Maxberry of Benton, Anderson Maxberry of Indianapolis and Louis Maxberry of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
William Roy "Smokey" Young
Elkton - Mr. William Roy “Smokey” Young, 87, of Elkton died Friday, March 15, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System in Owensboro.
Mr. Young was born January 8, 1915 in Christian County to the late John Clarence Young and Stella Chesnut Young. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and past owner/operator of Young’s Gulf Station. He was a member of the Elkton Baptist Church. Mr. Young was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthelle Willis Young in 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Emily Gholson of Owensboro; one son-in-law, Tony Gholson; one sister, Lillian Young of Elkton; and two grandchildren, Logan and Paxton Gholson of Owensboro.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 18, 2002 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with Reverend Jerry Tracy and Reverend John RichardChristian officiating. Burial followed in the Glenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the Elkton Baptist Church Building Fund and the American Cancer Society.
Carolyn H. (Hughes) Wallace
Madison, Indiana - Mrs. Carolyn H. (Hughes) Wallace of Madison, Indiana died Friday, March 15, 2002 in Madison.
Mrs. Wallace was born in Central City, Kentucky to the late Russell A. Hughes and Maude (Howard) Hughes Huff. She was born in Central City and moved to Flint, Michigan at the age of 5 and graduated from high school there. She later attended the University of Michigan and moved back to Central City in 1945. She co-owned and operated the Wallace Hardware Store in Central City with her husband from 1945 until she retired in 1977. She then moved to Madison to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed playing bridge and participating in many bridge tournaments all around Madison. She also worked crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She was a devoted grandmother to her two grandsons and was a member of the Central City United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by not only her parents but also her husband, William B. Wallace in October 1961; one son-in-law, Major General (Ret.) Cecil L. Dorten in February 2000; one sister, Juanita Ahern; one brother, John A. Hughes; and her step-father, Floyd Huff.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah W. Dorten of Madison; one son, George C. Wallace and his wife, Karen of Atlanta, GA; and two grandsons, Christopher R. Dorten of Bristol, TN and Patrick H. Dorten of Madison.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Roy James (R.J.) Vincent
Greenville - Mr. Roy James (R.J.) Vincent, 80, of Greenville died Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Vincent was born in Muhlenberg County on December 19, 1921. He was a member and deacon of Joines Chapel General Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher for 40 years. He was a WWII veteran serving in France, England, Italy and Germany. He retired in 1983 after working for Fox Lumber and Malone Lumber as a carpenter. He owned Vincent Cabinet Shop in Depoy for 15 years. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Taylor.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Amanell Skipworth Vincent of Greenville; one son, Terry K. Vincent of Greenville; one daughter, Charlotte Nuyt of Greenville; five grandchildren, Michael Vincent of Merritt Island, Fl. and Jamie Vincent, Brian Turner, Ben Turner and Bradley Turner all of Greenville; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara N. Riley of Greenville and Sue McElroy of Clarksville, Tn.; and one brother, Billy Jo Skipworth of Austin, Tx.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 25, 2002 at Joines Chapel Church with Reverend Jerry Sweeney officiating and ReverendGary Slaughters and Reverend Chris Odle assisting. Burial followed in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Clifty. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
Iva Dell McKinney
Beech Creek - Mrs. Iva Dell McKinney, 81, of Beech Creek died Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Mrs. McKinney was born in Muhlenberg County on August 8, 1920. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnice McKinney; one son, Billy Ray McKinney and Wanda Faye McKinney.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby McKinney of Tennessee Ridge, Tn. and Ricky McKinney; one daughter, Jo Dell Spears of Tennessee Ridge; four grandchildren, Wayne McKinney, Kinney Spears, Toby McKinney and Chris McKinney; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Beechmont with Reverend Phil Walton officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Hubert Gatlin Courtney
Greenville - Mr. Hubert Gatlin Courtney, 83, of Greenville died Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Courtneywas born in Muhlenberg County on April 13, 1918. He was of the Baptist faith and retired from Brown-Badgett Coal Company in 1981. He was also a self employed logger and truck mine operator.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Courtney of Greenville and Hubert Courtney Jr. of Greenville; one daughter, Betty Earle of Madisonville; one step-son, Barry Thomas of Paden, Ok.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 22, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Reverend Hershel Drake officiating and Reverend Terry Groves assisting. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Depoy.
Eula Mae Baggett
Owensboro - Mrs. Eula Mae Baggett, 85, of Owensboro died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at her residence.
Mrs. Baggett was born in Muhlenberg County on May 30, 1916. She was a retired analyzer for G.E. in Owensboro. She was a member of Drakesboro Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing and ceramics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Baggett in 1969 and a son, Ronald in 1942.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Baggett and Ray Baggett both of Owensboro; one daughter, Carolyn McLaughlin of Owensboro; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, James E. Arnold of Greenville; and one sister, Lorell Steele of Pinellas Park, Florida.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 23, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Charles Smith officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.

Chester Putnam
Titusville, Florida - Mr. Chester Putnam, 76, of Titusville, Florida, formerly of Greenville and Freelandville, Indiana died Thursday, January 31, 2002 in Titusville.
Mr. Putnam was born in Browder to the late Mabel and Claude Putnam. Chet grew up in Greenville, where his family owned and ran Putnam’s Florist on Main Street. After leaving High School to enter the Navy during World War II, he served on the USS Keokuk, a net layer, in the Pacific theater. He was recently awarded his high school Diploma in Florida, through a breakthrough program implemented there to honor our country’s Veterans. After returning to Greenville, Chester married Marjorie Hinton of Beech Creek who survives. He was on the Greenville Police Force in the 50’s and early 60’s becoming Chief of Police. In the mid 60’s, while working for Peabody Coal Company, Mr. Putnam moved his family to Freelandville, Indiana. He retired from Peabody’s Hawthorne Mine, near Dugger, Indiana. A member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Freelandville, he was an associate member of Indian River City United Methodist Church in Titusville.He was also a member of the Pond River Masonic Lodge in Greenville, American Legion Post #1 and BPOE in Titusville. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lynne Ann Cooper, his parents, Claude and Mabel, one brother, Clarence and sister Lola Mae Putnam Dunn.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Titusville; one daughter, Claudia Hannah of Sanford, Florida; two sons, Joe of Merrillville, In. and David of Estero, Florida; grandchildren, Scott Cooper, Kristy Putnam, Shannon Edwards, Matthew Putnam, Shaun Putnam, Cassandra Putnam, Bretta Chapman and Trey Hannah; great-granddaughters, Morgan and Aimee Chapman; three brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on February 2, 2002.
Jo Ann Bard
Greenville - Mrs. Jo Ann Bard, 47, of Greenville died Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at Maple Manor Health Care and Rehabilitation Facility.
Mrs. Bard was born in December 16, 1954 in Hopkins County. She was a faithful servant and member of the Power House Church of God in Christ in Greenville. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Pastor’s Aide and Assistant Superintendent. She was preceded in death by her loving father, Willie J. Lovan.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Lee Bard of Greenville; one son, Larry DeShawnt Bard (wife, Nikki) of Greenville; three daughters, Katrina R. Harrison (husband, James) of Central City, Joy LeAnn Hampton (husband, Therman) of Depoy and Ebony Shantel Monique Bard (finacee Joshua Baggett) of Greenville; her mother, Martha Lovan of Nortonville; five brothers, James Sharber of Mortons Gap, William Lovan of Henderson, Terry Lovan of Louisville, Carl Garrett of Bowling Green and Ray Lovan of Evansville; five sisters, Chequita Cowherd of Fort Wayne, In., Martha Hawkins and Karen Drake of Greenville, Lisa Leavell of Little Rock, Ar. and Leslie Tandy of Madisonville; grandchildren, Kaneesha Bard, Christopher Bard, DeBraylan Hampton, Ezekiel Merritt and Kyndal Bard; and lots of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Power House Church of God in Christ. Burial followed at Old Unity Cemetery in Graham.
William Howard Settlemires
Central City - Mr. William Howard Settlemires, 91, of Central City died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.
Mr. Settlemires was born in Muhlenberg County on January 24, 1911. He was a retired operator for Kentucky Utilities and a member of First United Methodist Church in Central City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Settlemires in 1984.
Survivors include one son, Glenn Settlemires of Pleasant View, Tn.; one daughter-in-law, Ida Settlemires of Pleasant View, Tn.; two grandchildren, Gina and Matt Settlemires also of Pleasant View; and one sister, Lockie Vinson of Central City.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Jeff D. Matties officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Hazel Browning
Greenville - Mrs. Hazel Browning, 90, of Greenville died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville.
Mrs. Browning was born in Muhlenberg County on October 20, 1911 to the late Roma Lile and Ora Knight. She was a homemaker and a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by Vernie Browning in 1958 and two brothers, R.L. Lile and Irvin Lile.
Survivors include one son Roger Browning of Greenville; one daughter, Margie Lee of Greenville; four grandchildren, Ricky Lee, Sherry Whitney, Mandy Browning and April Browning; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, J.G. Lile of Echols; and one sister, Marie Harper of Powderly.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Carl Nelson officiating and Reverend Adam Brown assisting. Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery in Greenville.
Harold Edwin Dwyer
Greenville - Mr. Harold Edwin Dwyer, 79, of Greenville died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville following several weeks of illness.
Mr. Dwyer was born in Muhlenberg County on August 8, 1922. He taught in the Muhlenberg County School System for 50 years before retirement. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and he attended the Olive Grove General Baptist Church and was a Christian.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ethelene Strader Dwyer of Greenville; one daughter, Sandra Dwyer Benham of Greenville; one brother, Charles Dwyer of Greenville; one sister, Mary Dwyer Miller of Maryville, Tn.; one aunt, Almeda Dwyer of Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 23, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Reverend Joe Pulley officiating. Burial followed in the Greenbriar School House Cemetery in Rosewood.
Cleo Stephens
Greenville - Mr. Cleo Stephens, 75, of Greenville died Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at his residence in Greenville.
Mr. Stephens was born in Piskens County, South Carolina on November 21, 1926. He was a retired miner and a veteran of World War II.He was preceded in death by Earl Stephens.
Survivors include his wife, Francis Rust Stephens; six sons, Steven James of Central City, Jeff (Tracy) Stephens of Greenville, Randy (Nancy) Stephens of Hopkinsville and Timmy Stephens, Cleo Stephens, Jr. and Garland Stephens all of South Carolina; six daughters, Sandi (Robert) Piper of Drakesboro, Brenda (Darris) Dukes of Bremen, Delta Morgan of Beechmont, Charlene (Fred) Meador of Bowling Green, Faye (Bruce) Crick of White Plains and Mary Piper of Greenville; 32 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six brothers, H.V. Stephens, James Stephens, Ed Stephens, Carl Stephens, LeRoy Stephens and Loyd Stephens all of South Carolina; and three sisters, Rachel Morton, Kathlin Thompson and Opal Jean Davis all of South Carolina.
