Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 19, 1903, she was a homemaker and a member of Lone Star Church in Ohio County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Otis Curtis.
Survivors include a son, Roy Delbert Curtis of Louisville; a sister, Gladys Sampson of Greenville; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Oct. 28 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Echols Cemetery in Ohio County.
David Harold Mercer
BOWLING GREEN David Harold Mercer, 70, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 at Bowling Green Medical Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County to the late Lee Mercer and Eva Robinson Mercer, he was a retired steel worker for USX Corp. in Gary, Indiana. He was a member of Hillvue Heights Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Mercer, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley McMillen Mercer; a son, David Scott Mercer of Fishers, Ind.; a sister, Wanda Clark of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 29 at J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel at 820 Lovers Lane in Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Bowling Green Gardens. David Allan Jernigan
GREENVILLE David Allan Jernigan, 84, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 7, 1919, he was a retired miner from Brown Badgett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Emogene Jernigan in Aug. 2003.
Survivors include a son, David H. Jernigan of Greenville; two daughters, Nancy Rouse of Midway, Ky., and Janie Faulkner of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Britton David Clopton, Eric Jernigan, Carrie Jernigan, Andrew Jernigan, Lane Faulkner, and Mary Kathryn Faulkner; and one great-grandchild, Christopher Clopton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 29 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Oct. 28 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City.
J.C. Segers
J.C. Segers, 80, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
He was a lifetime resident of Martwick and Nelson Community.
He was well known by his close friends as being a great guitar player, as well as the local barber.
He taught several friends his style of thumbpicking. He also taught three of his nephews, Jimmie Ed, John and Kenny Segers so much about playing the guitar. J.C.’s talent lives on through them.
He will be greatly missed by his brother, Ed Segers of Nelson, nieces Anita Douglas, June (Gordon) McRoy, Eva Jo (Tom) King, Sandy (Richard) Johnson; nephews Jimmie Ed, John (Barb), Kenny (Sissy), and David (Becky).
Funeral services were conducted Oct. 21with the Rev. Paul Uzzle, Jr., Pastor of Nelson Pentecostal Church, officiating. Burial was at Nelson Creek Cemetery.
James Edgar “Chick” Knight
BROWDER James Edgar “Chick” Knight, 61, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 1, 1942, he was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was employed at Ensign Bickford in Graham.
Survivors include a son, James Anthony “Tony” Knight of Browder; a brother, Bobby Harold Knight of Beaver Dam; and a sister, June Hill of Browder.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Oct. 21 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Piper officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Martha Christine Baker
BELTON Martha Christine Baker, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 4, 1917, to the late George and Lizzie Maxberry Reynolds, she was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Grady Wilford Reynolds and Jim Bob Reynolds; two sisters, Beatrice Pierson and Pauline Weatherford; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Leann Whitmer.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip P. Baker; a son, S.P. “Cracker” Baker of Belton; a daughter, Joyce Whitney of Belton; two sisters, Wanda Shanall of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Lillie Belle Travis of Browder; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Oct. 22 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Leamon Mefford officiating. Burial followed in Union Ridge Cemetery in Belton.
Phil S. “Red” Griffin
CLEATON Phil S. “Red” Griffin, 55, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at the V.A. Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 5, 1948, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a construction worker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a stepson; two stepdaughters; a brother, Gary Griffin of Nelson Creek; three sisters, Jolene Pendley of Central City, Modell Belcher of Mound City, Kan. and Doris Jean Ivino of Saugerties, N.Y.; and seven step grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Oct. 19 at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. T.H. Davis officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Cynthia “Cindy” Denise Epley
SUWANEE, GA. Cynthia “Cindy” Denise Epley, 44, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 following a short illness.
She was a legal assistant for Carothers & Mitchell, Attorneys at Law in Buford, Ga. after spending 12 years as a court reporter and judge’s assistant in Boonville, Ind. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Eva Jean Edwards of Central City.
Survivors include her husband, Lynn Epley; a daughter, Lindsey Epley; a son, Chase Epley, all of Suwanee, Ga.; her parents, Bill and Louise White of Central City; father and mother-in-law, Bobby and Belva Epley of Owensboro; a sister, Tally Shaw of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Timmy White of Bremen; two nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Woodson Missionary Baptist Church in Powderly. The date and time are pending.
Erik Bennett
Erik Bennett, 31, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004 at Highway 70 in Hopkins County as the result of a car accident.
Born in Daviess County, Jan. 28, 1973, he was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Central City and a lineman for Hendrix Electric Company in Clay, Ky.
Survivors include a daughter, Erika D’Ann Bennett of Ohio County; his parents, Ben and Teresa Bennett of Pensacola, Fla.; and two brothers, Michael Bennett of Chrisney, Ind. and Chad Bennett of Radcliff.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Oct. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Everly officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

Golda Mae Pendley
Golda Mae Pendley, 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 20, 1923, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Central City.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Don) Cary of Central City; a son, Billy (Peggy) Pendley of Central City; three sisters, Dorothy Toll of Evansville, Ind., Betty Noffsinger of Central City and Bobbie Carr of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Jim Lamastus of Mo.; three grandchildren, Chris Cary of Owensboro, Christa Brangers of Cecilia, Ky. and John Jon Pendley of Central City and four great-grandchildren, Christian Cary, Zachary Cary, Courtney Brangers and Michaela Brangers.

Violet Anderson Bullock
MADISONVILLE - Violet Anderson Bullock, 84, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Powderly Jan. 26, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Murphy and Laura Randolph Murphy. She was a homemaker and a member of New Beginnings Church in Madisonville and the Regional Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond T. Anderson in 1977; a son, Henry R. Anderson in 2003; three sisters, Cosbie Cooksey, Marie West and Annie Laura Murphy and two brothers, James and John Murphy.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Lear and Carla Hall, both of Greenville and Linda Kowalkowski of Madisonville; a son, David E. Anderson of Madisonville; a sister, Ruth Murphy Carr of Louisville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Brother Dewayne Preston Brown and Brother Richard Day officiating. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Delbert Lee Chandler
GREENVILLE - Delbert Lee Chandler, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several months of illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Elgean Lee Chandler and Lola Belle Latham Chandler and attended Olive Grove General Baptist Church. He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II and the Korean War where he received a Bronze Star. He was a farmer and worked for Powell Construction in Clifty. He also worked for the Muhlenberg County Highway Department and retired in 1988 from AYR Gem Mines after 12-1/2 years as a UMWA coal miner. He was preceded in death by a brother, V.J. Chandler.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Cora Mae Boggess Chandler; a daughter, Sharon (David) Winn of Greenville; four brothers, Sanford Chandler, Orvil Chandler, Murvin Chandler and Bonnie Chandler, all of Greenville; a sister, Catherine Settle of Greenville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Brother Richard Day and Brother J.W. Haire officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Olive Grove Cemetery in Greenville.
William Douglas Hines
DRAKESBORO - William Douglas Hines, 58, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Fred and Ruth Hines. He was an insulator employed by T.V.A., a member of the former St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Drakesboro and a veteran of the Army. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wednesday Hines and a brother, Stanley Hines.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lovan Hines; two sons, William Fredrick D. Hines of Drakesboro and Jerry Lewis Green of Hopkinsville; a daughter, Crystal LaChelle Hines of Louisville; four brothers, Harold Hines of Drakesboro, Stephen (Meredith) Hines of Madisonville, Perry (Lisa) Hines of Carmel, Ind. and Patrick (Venieshia) Hines of Lawrenceburg; four brothers-in-law, William (Theresa) Lovan and Vincent Lovan, both of Crofton, Paul (Sharon) Lovan of Madisonville and Cowan Lovan of N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Dorethea Hill of Hopkinsville, Vivian Lovan of Evansville and Janice Hines of Central City; a grandson, Sahvon M. Hines and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville with the Rev. Samuel Harris and the Rev. Sheral McCoy officiating. Burial with military honors followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
James Lyle Payne
GREENVILLE - James Lyle Payne, 79, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Marion, Ky. Dec. 12, 1925, he was the son of the late William Paul and Mary Payne. He was a heavy equipment operator employed by Ayer-Gem Mining and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Barry Payne; a daughter, Patricia Karen Oliver and three brothers, Howard Payne, Chester Payne and Marion Payne.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Edelen Payne; three sons, James Edward Payne of Belton, Randall Carroll Payne of Beechmont and Bernard Lyle “Ted” Payne of Central City; two daughters, Donna Jean Gootee of Powderly and Kathy DeArmond Brown of Greenville; four brothers, the Rev. Paul Payne of Mason, Ohio, Joe Payne of Lebanon, Gerald Payne of Leithchfield and Ronnie Payne of Calvert City; two sisters, Helen Mattingly of Hammond, Ind. and Edith Perkins of Campbellsville, Ky.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.

Pearl J. Singer
EVANSVILLE, IND - Pearl J. Singer, 87, formerly of Dunmor, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 at Parkview Care Center.
Born in Todd County Oct. 24, 1917, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Homer G. Singer in 1989; a great-grandchild, Lauren MacKenzie Singer in 2001; a great great-grandchild, Starr Elizabeth Morefield in 2000; a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include a son, Roy E. Singer of Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Dorothy Morefield of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a sister, Rachel Garrett of Central City; two brothers, Robert Sadler of Cadiz, Ohio and Cecil Sadler of Elizabethtown, Ky.; six grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 11 great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 25 at Alexander West Chapel in Evansville with the Rev. Ernest Stair officiating. Burial followed in Alexander Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the American Cancer Society.
