Born July 13, 1935, she was a member of Powers Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Lee Harper in 1973.
She is survived by two sons, Randall Harper of Central City and David Harper of Sacramento; five grandchildren, Amy Romans, Larry White, Samuel Bo Heauton, Jeffery Piper and Jason Piper; two sisters, Nola Abrams of San Angelo, Texas and Gloria Gay Ellis of Sacramento.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home, with Rev. J. W. Haire officiating. Burial will follow in Coleman Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James Walton English
GREENVILLE - James Walton English, 65, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in the Medical Center in Bowling Green, from injuries suffered in a hunting accident on his farm in Todd County.
Born June 7, 1937, the son of Everett Allen English and Lucille English, in Caldwell County, he retired from River Queen Mine in 1993 after 35 years as a UMWA coal miner. He was a veteran of the Army Reserves and a member of New Cypress Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Brenda Joyce Vincent English of Greenville; one son, T Sgt. David (Tera L.) Heltsey of Belleville, Ill.; one granddaughter, Laura Madison Heltsey of Belleville, Ill.; three sisters, Margaret Cooper of Evansville, Sue Nesmith of Manitou and Betty Hamby of Dawson Springs; one brother, Ralph English of Nebo; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 12, after 5 p.m., and Wednesday, after 9 a.m., at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., also at Gary’s Funeral Home, with Rev. Jeff Noffsinger officiating. Burial will follow in the New Cypress Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Gary’s Funeral Home.
Brittany Siobhan Francis
PENSACOLA, FLA. - Brittany Siobhan Francis, 24, died Nov. 1, 2002.
She was a native of Clark County, Ind. and a resident of Pensacola, Fla.
Survivors include her mother, Shirley D. Fulford, of Gulf Shores, Ala.; father, William R. “Bill” Francis of Lewisburg; step-father, Fred Fulford, Sr. of Gulf Shores; and brother, William Shane Francis of Pensacola.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 7, at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley, Ala. which was in charge of arrangements. Burial followed in Pine Rest Memorial Park, also in Foley.
Reverend Barbee Arnold (B.A.) Mercer
GREENVILLE - Reverend Barbee Arnold (B.A.) Mercer, 80, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 29, 1925, he was the son of the late Jesse Darrell Mercer and Lucy Audrey Barbee. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He began preaching in March of 1948 and preached 5,800 sermons and 150 revivals. He was ordained in Union Association and pastored churches in both Union and Long Creek Association. The highlight of his ministry was pastoring his home church, Duvall’s Chapel, for 15 years. He made two missionary trips to Jamaica ministering in revival and youth camps. He was a published songwriter, having written more than 1,000 songs and had approximately 15 songs recorded by top artists in Gospel Music including the late Gov. Jimmie Davis of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by three brothers, R.T. Mercer, Alna Mercer and Benjamin Courtland Mercer; three sisters, June Jernigan, Lorene Thompson and Clarice Evitts and one grandchild, Allen Carver.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Mercer; two daughters, Carol Paulette (David) Carver and Peggy (Larry) Evitts, both of Greenville; two grandsons, Marlin (Tracy) Evitts and Jody (Terri) Carver; one granddaughter, Shannon (Kelly) Richey and four great-grandchildren, Carson Richey, Clay Richey, Tyler Carver and Paige Carver.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Arvil Oakley, Pastor Ken Miller, the Rev. Buck Rambo and the Rev. Harry Baldwin officiating. Burial followed in Old Bethel Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Jonathan Lee Penrod
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jonathan Lee Penrod, 33, formerly of Greenville, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 5, 1972, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Penrod of Greenville and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his parents and two brothers, Gary Wayne Penrod of Eureka, N.C. and Terry Lane Penrod of Russellville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 8:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home.
Billy Wayne Groves
GRAHAM - Billy Wayne Groves, 62, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005 in a truck accident in Hopkins County.
Born in Muhlenberg County June 13, 1943, he was the son of William Morton Groves and Eris Marquetta Tarrants Groves. He was a retired U.M.W.A. coal miner. In 1990 he retired from Sinclair Underground after 20 years. He was a member of the Belton Beechmont General Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Linda Darline Stanley Groves; two daughters, Janine Hill and Kim Erby, both of Jackson, Miss.; a brother, William Edward Groves of Hopkinsville; eight sisters, Louise Deering of Valley Station, Ky., Willodean Henderson of Vine Grove, Ky., Eris Aliene Brown of Paintsville, Ky., Hilda Sue Groves and Robin Denise Coleman, both of Salem, Va., and Helen Ruth Smith, Mary Joe Groves and Wanda Tooley, all of Greenville and five grandchildren, Cody, Kaitlyn, Sammy, Hannah and Chase.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 11 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. J.W. Haire and the Rev. Timothy Camplin officiating. Burial followed in Graham Cemetery in Graham.
Catherine Mae Mefford
BREMEN - Catherine Mae Mefford, 71, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Altoona, Penn. April 19, 1934, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Mefford; a son, Mark Blough of Greenville; a daughter, Roxann Bartlett of Central City and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff DiMatties officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Oscar David Lewis Jr.
IRONTON, OHIO - Oscar David Lewis Jr., 77, formerly of Drakesboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
Born in Drakesboro Jan. 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Oscar David Lewis Sr. and Opal Mefford Lewis Billingsly. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, served in the Korean War, participated in the Bikini Atoll-Bomb Test and a former truck driver for Rollinson Trucking. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Lewis.
Survivors include a son, John Lewis of Louisville; a daughter, Cheryl Lewis of Louisville; three sisters, Anna Shelton and Mary Kirkham, both of Louisville and Avanell Schmidt of Greenville and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton, Ohio.
Lawrence W. Wells
CLEATON - Lawrence W. Wells, 84, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County May 16, 1921, he was retired from the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Landrum Wells and a son, Kirk Wells of Sequim, Wash.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at Tucker Funeral Home with Larry McDonald officiating.
Hazel Ellen Maraman Clayton
MADISONVILLE - Hazel Ellen Maraman Clayton, 84, formerly of Greenville, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.
Born in Webster County Dec. 31, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Roy Denzil Maraman and Bessie Mae Buchanan Maraman. She was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Madisonville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Raymond Vance Clayton; two sisters, Mary Denzel Greer and Ruth Helen Hillyard; two brothers, William and James Maraman and a great-granddaughter, Alison Jane Jessup.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Wyatt, Vanna Clardy and Paula Jessup, all of Madisonville; a brother, Donald Ray Maraman of Rosemont, Mich.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Brother Tondra Daughtery and Brother Jim Lantrip officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Liberty Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Randy Heltsley
MADISONVILLE - Randy Heltsley, 51, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Hopkins County Jan. 27, 1954, he was the son of the late Seymore Heltsley and Katherine Heltsley Underwood. He was a coal miner and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his companion, Angie Jones of Madisonville; a sister, Carolyn Davis of Central City; a brother, Douglas Heltsley of Madisonville; a half sister, Janette Birch of Vancouver, Wash.; a grandmother, Florence Johnson of Central City and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Ellis and Brother Marshall Lee officiating. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery in Mortons Gap, Ky. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the American Red Cross.
Claude Wilson Green
GREENVILLE - Claude Wilson Green, 89, died Monday Oct. 3, 2005 at Owensboro Medical Health System following several days of illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Dec. 2, 1915, he was the son of the late Carl Green and Edith Murphy Green. He was a retired plumber and farmer in the Greens Chapel Community. He was a member of the Greens Chapel General Baptist Church, Orphans Friends and a 60 plus year member of Masonic Lodge #235 in White Plains. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louella Peterson Green Jan. 31, 1992 and his second wife, Bernice (Bernie) Edith L. Lile Green Sept. 1, 2001.
Survivors include several cousins.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Fulcher and the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Greens Chapel Cemetery in Greenville.
Ezra Green Layne
Ezra Green Layne, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Barnshee in Pike County Aug. 3, 1936, he was the son of the late Green Layne and Bell Woolford Layne. He was a tool and die maker for Harrington & King in Chicago, Ill. and he retired in 2000 after 27 years. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gerald Ann Lee Layne; a son, Kent Layne of Pikeville, Ky.; a step-daughter, Karen (Armando) Tenorio of Owensboro; three step-sons, Ricky (Sharon) Travis of Burbank, Ill., Terry (Margaret) Travis of Greenville and Johnny (Becky) Travis of Owensboro; a brother, Earl Layne of Pikeville, Ky.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Hibbs officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 13 at Gary’s Funeral Home.
Clarence Miller Jr.
GREENVILLE - Clarence Miller Jr., 72, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Clarence Miller Sr. and Lillie Mae Dukes Miller. He was a U.M.W.A. coal miner and he retired in 1998 after 20 years at River Queen Coal Mines as a diesel mechanic. He was a Greenville volunteer fireman before his retirement and a member of Elkton Road Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clemontene Shelton Miller Dec. 30, 2000 and a great-granddaughter, Jacqualin Deason March 1, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Curtis (Kaye) Miller of Greenville; two daughters, Cindy Lea Jones and Chasity L. Miller, both of Greenville; five grandchildren, Robert Curtis Miller, Teresa Deason, Chrissy Brady, Stacy Jones and Tracy Jones, all of Greenville and three great-grandchildren.

Junior Dollas Stogner
LOUISVILLE Junior Dollas Stogner, 84, formerly of Muhlenberg County, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at Masonic Home in Louisville.
Born in McLean County, Feb. 12, 1920, he was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Central City and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Stogner of Centertown and Curtis Stogner of West Lafayette, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Oct. 9 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Morrow officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
