Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 14, 1939, he was a sawmill and security worker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dan William Jewell and two sisters, Delphia Blick and Jonell House.
Survivors include a brother, Isaac Tilmon Jewell of Central City and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 26 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Pharris officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Freddie Welborn
Freddie Welborn, 56, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at Owensboro Medical Health Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 25, 1949, he was the son of Minnie Welborn and the late Brownie Welborn. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Central City where he served as usher, a member of the Board of Trustees and was Sunday School Class Treasurer.
Survivors include his mother; three brothers, Jackie (Paula) Welborn, of Louisville, Tommy (Pam) Welborn and Ricky (Teresa) Welborn, both of Central City; a sister, Shirley (Mike) Withrow of Edgewood, Ky.; nine nieces, four nephews, three great-nieces and eight great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Skipworth and the Rev. Ernest Bean officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Mae Emily Devine
DRAKESBORO - Mae Emily Devine, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Born in Muhlenberg County April 25, 1923, she was a homemaker and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Heltsley of Drakesboro and Janet Edwards of Greenville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Powderly with Pastor Jerret Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Carlos Conard Smith
BREMEN - Carlos Conard Smith, 70, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 10, 1935, he was in the farming and logging industry and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Davis Smith; a son, Kenny Smith of Bremen; four daughters, Debra Zackery and Lanie Tooley, both of Central City and Kathy Smith and Tracy Kirkwood, both of Bremen; three brothers, Glenn Smith and Leonard Smith, both of Bremen and Doug Smith of Semiway, Ky.; a sister, Orina Mahlosky of Central City; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Todd and the Rev. J.W. Haire officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.
Tammy Darlene Nelson
DRAKESBORO - Tammy Darlene Nelson, 39, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 at her parents’ residence.
Born in Hammond, Ind. Feb. 16, 1966, she was the daughter of Roger L. and Sandra K. Smith of Drakesboro. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Katelyn Nelson and two grandfathers, Carlton Smith and Beane Barber.
Survivors include her husband, Jeff Nelson; a daughter, Abby Nelson of Drakesboro; her parents; two brothers, Roger (Becky) Smith of Drakesboro and Robbie (Stacy) Smith of Central City; two grandmothers, Dorothy Barber and Magdolene Smith, both of Drakesboro; two nephews, Michael Smith and Matt Smith and two nieces, Harley Smith and Chloe Smith.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Mooneyhan officiating. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Reverend Barbee Arnold (B.A.) Mercer
GREENVILLE - Reverend Barbee Arnold (B.A.) Mercer, 80, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 29, 1925, he was the son of the late Jesse Darrell Mercer and Lucy Audrey Roland. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He began preaching in March of 1948 and preached 5,800 sermons and 150 revivals. He was ordained in Union Association and pastored churches in both Union and Long Creek Association. His highlight of ministry was pastoring his home church, Duvall’s Chapel, for 15 years. He made two missionary trips to Jamaica ministering in revival and youth camps. He was a published songwriter and had approximately 15 songs recorded by top artists in Gospel Music including the late Gov. Jimmie Davis of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by three brothers, R.T. Mercer, Alna Mercer and Benjamin Courtland Mercer; three sisters, June Jernigan, Lorene Thompson and Clarice Evitts and one grandchild, Allen Carver.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Mercer; two daughters, Carol Paulette (David) Carver and Peggy (Larry) Evitts, both of Greenville; two grandsons, Marlin (Tracy) Evitts and Jody (Terri) Carver; one granddaughter, Shannon (Kelly) Richey and four great-grandchildren, Carson Richey, Clay Richey, Tyler Carver and Paige Carver.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Arvil Oakley, Pastor Ken Miller, the Rev. Buck Rambo and the Rev. Harry Baldwin officiating. Burial followed in Old Bethel Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Elaine Melton
BURKESVILLE, KY - Elaine Melton, 64 died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Born in Burkesville, Ky. Sept. 16, 1941, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Wells and Lucy Jane Blythe Wells.
Survivors include two sons, John Marshall Melton and George Melton, both of Burkesville; a daughter, Bernice Jones of Olney, Mo.; four brothers, Bobby Wells of Sacramento, Frank Wells and Mack Wells, both of Indianapolis, Ind. and John Lee Wells of Bowling Green; a sister, Gladys Melton of Burkesville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home in Burkesville with Brother Lanny Garner and Tom Dicken officiating. Burial will follow in Gains Hill Cemetery in Burkesville. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at Ballou & Stotts Funeral Home in Burkesville.
Mary Lucille Parrott
LOUISVILLE, KY - Mary Lucille Parrott, 92, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at her granddaughter’s residence.
Born in Louisville Nov. 11, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Logan and Sarah Woods and was a member of Kosmosdale Baptist Church in Louisville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Parrott, Sr.
Survivors include a son, Cecil Parrott, Jr.; two daughters, Carol Mulkins and Belle Stover; a sister, Stella Lee; a brother, Howard Woods; four grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 22 great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 at W.G. Hardy Valley Chapel in Louisville with the Rev. Mike Senior officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Sue Nell Leaf
LOUISVILLE, KY - Sue Nell Leaf, 78, a native of Muhlenberg County, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 at the Inpatient Unit of Hospice and Palliative Care of Louisville’s Norton Healthcare.
Born Nov. 20, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James E. Ford and Floy Welborn Ford and of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a sister, Marjorie Dukes of Greenville and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville with Father Joseph Rankin officiating. Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Louisville.
Margie Law
ELKTON Margie Law, 60, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at her residence of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, Jan. 27, 1946, she worked at Flynn Enterprises and was a faithful member of Allegre Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Lamb; her second husband, Frank Law; her parents, Hubert and Ester Ann Williams Owens; and one brother, Carlos Owens.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Lamb and John Law, both of Allegre; four daughters, Pam Wilson and Tammy Cardwell, both of Elkton, Velda Shanklin of Allegre and Janet Glass of Hopkinsville; two sisters, Martha Knight of Russellville and Linda Shepherd of Guthrie; three step-daughters, Fay Duncan and Loyce Wells, both of Elkton and May Crafton of Russellville; one step-son, Bobby Law of Elkton; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Latham Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in Cox Cemetery.
Alice Margaret Carver
GREENVILLE Alice Margaret Carver, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County April 6, 1920, she was a factory worker and attended Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. F. Carver and a grandson, Allen David Carver.
Survivors include two sons, Bill (Dorothy) Carver and David Gale (Paulette) Carver, both of Greenville; three daughters, Margaret (Rev. Walter) Evitts, Jo Nell (Robert “Butch”) Kittinger and Diane (Johnny) Mercer, all of Greenville; two sisters, Irene Shemwell and Eva Dell Hagbert, both of Leesville, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Miller and the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Jackson Cemetery in Beech Creek. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Jackie Paul Hickman
SULLIVAN, IND. - Jackie Paul Hickman, 67, formerly of Central City, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at his mother’s residence in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 2, 1939, he was a retired tipple supervisor at Amax Coal Company and a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Shelburn, Ind.
Survivors include his wife, Shelba Abbott Hickman; a son, Christopher Paul Hickman of Newburgh, Ind.; a daughter, Susan Renee (Doug) Martin of Newburgh; his mother, Helen Hickman of Central City; two grandchildren, Lydia Martin and Perry Martin; and two nephews, Kenny (Pat) Raley and Larry (Karen) Raley and their children.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Moore officiating. Burial followed at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.
Carolyn Jones
BEECHMONT Carolyn Jones, 59, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 24, 1947, she was a homemaker and attended Horton’s Chapel Church of Christ in Belton.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Jones; two sons, Brian Jones of Lewisburg and Jared Jones of Bowling Green; her mother, Dorothy Mohon of Belton; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with Mr. Paul Moore officiating. Burial followed in Horton’s Chapel Cemetery in Belton.
James Lloyd Rose
FT. LAUDERDALE James Lloyd Rose, 57, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, in the Tradewater Pointe Nursing Home in Dawson Springs after several months’ illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 6, 1949, to the late James Ross Rose and the late Hazel Juanita Vincent Rose, he was a chef on cruise ships and restaurants in Fort Lauderdale for several years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Foster Rose.
Survivors include a brother, Darrell (Faye) Rose of Nortonville; a sister-in-law, Becky Rose of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in New Cypress Cemetery in Greenville with the Rev. Terry Chaney officiating. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
David Wayne Shadowen
GREENVILLE David Wayne Shadowen, 39, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County June 11, 1967, he was a Lead Man at Tyson Foods and was a member of New Cypress Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Jeremy Shadowen.
Survivors include his wife, Dianna Pointer Shadowen; a daughter, Ashley Shadowen of Ill.; two step-sons, Dustin Johnson and Brandon Johnson, both of Greenville; his parents, Glendal and Shirley Shadowen of Browder; a sister, Amanda Curry of Browder; and four adopted sisters, Kaylee Shadowen, Kennedy Shadowen, Reagan Shadowen and Jessica Shadowen.
