ST. CLAIRE, MICHIGAN - Deborah Gladys Barber LaVine, 49, of St. Claire, Michigan, formerly of Muhlenberg County (Beechmont), died Saturday, August 3, 2002 in Wayne County in Detroit, Michigan.
Born October 20, 1952 in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of Cross Pointe Baptist Church in Owensboro. She was formerly employed by Cowden Sewing Factory in Central City, Peabody and Island Creek Coal Company for 10 years and food catering service in St. Claire, Michigan. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, music, ceramics and her cats.
Survivors include her parents, Bob and Mary Alice Barber of Beechmont; three sisters, Bonnie (Ron) Piers of Wilkinson, Ind., Betty (Pat) Shelton of Elberfeld, Ind. and Pam (Greg) Porter of Penrod; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Beechmont with Reverend Jerry Troutman officiating. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery in Drakesboro.

E. J. Dukes
BEECH CREEK - E. J. Dukes, 77, of Beech Creek died at 2:00 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2002 at his home in Beech Creek.
Born March 8, 1925 in Muhlenberg County, he was a World War II veteran and of the Catholic faith. He was retired from U.S. Steel in Hammond, Ind.
Survivors include three sons, James Dukes and Tommy Dukes both of Hammond, Ind. and Bobby Joe Dukes of Beech Creek; two daughters, Carolyn Stewart of Manchester, Ky. and Theresa Garner of Asheboro, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Billy Dukes and Tommy Dukes, both of Drakesboro; one step-brother, Vernon Richardson of Drakesboro; and two sisters, Dorothy Barber of Drakesboro and Pauline Dodd of Milano, Texas.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 11, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery.

Tillie Arnold
BEECHMONT - Tillie Gertrude Arnold, 92, of Beechmont died Friday, August 9, 2002 at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born May 17, 1910 in Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Walter Smith and Katie Vanlandingham. She was of the Baptist faith and preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Arnold and one son, Buddy Arnold.
Survivors include one son, Carl Arnold of Belton; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Arnold of Beechmont; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 12, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home in Beechmont with Reverend Terry Chaney officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.

Donald Shirel
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Donald Eugene Shirel, 67, of Austin, Texas, died Friday, August 9, 2002 at 4:05 a.m. in the North Austin Medical Center in Austin, Texas after a lengthy illness.
Born October 2, 1934 in Union County, he was a retired construction worker and was of the Christian faith. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War
and was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Carol Stewart Shirel in 1981; his sister, Maggie Bumpus; and his brother, Louis Shirel, Jr.
Survivors include one son, Donald Dwight Shirel of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Kim Lynn Shirel of Austin, Texas; one granddaughter, Lacy Ann Shirel of Austin, Texas; one grandson, Travis Shirel of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Orvel Shirel, B.J. Shirel and Dix Shirel all of Sturgis, KY; and four sisters, Ella Mae Thompson of Evansville, Ind., Lenvia Lovell of Sturgis, June Wolfe of Sturgis and Nellie Joyce Rowley of Oklahoma City, OK.
Graveside services were held Sunday, August 11, 2002 at Corley Chapel Cemetery in Graham with Reverend Nathan Baize officiating.
Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of all arrangements.

Garland Ray
SACRAMENTO - Garland Paul Ray, 82, of Sacramento died at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, August 11, 2002 at his son’s residence in Sacramento.
Born April 28, 1920 in McLean County, he was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Ray; three brothers, Harland Ray, Herschel Ray and Jack Ray; and three sisters, Marjorie Arnold, Velma Ray and Edith Green.
Survivors include one son, Shannon Ray of Sacramento; and one grandson, Dyllan Ray of Sacramento.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with Reverend Mike Rust officiating. Burial will follow in Free Union Cemetery in Sacramento.
Bruce Waters, 88, died at 10:36 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Maple Manor Nursing Home following several weeks of illness.
Born April 7, 1914 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the former P & M Coal Company. He was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church since 1926.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Kathryn Waters of Greenville; three daughters, June Daugherty of West Palm Beach, Fla., Nancy Dizney of Corbin and Lori Cornett of Greenville; one son, Robert Bruce Waters of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Barnard of Beaver Dam.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Reverend Vernon Perdue officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greenville Elementary Resource Center.

Harold Schultz
DUNMOR - Harold H. Schultz, 69, of Dunmor died at 9:28 a.m.Sunday, August 11, 2002 at a health care home in Franklin, Kentucky.
Born December 10, 1932 in Gary, Indiana, he was the son of the late James and Viola Schultz. He was a veteran of the military and a truck driver for TVA. He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy. He was preceded in death by not only his parents but also his wife, Betty Schultz.
Survivors include one daughter, Madonna Ammons of Russellville; two sons, Tony Schultz of Russellville and Larry Schultz of Greenville; three sisters, Maggie Hickle of French Lick, Ind., Naomi Hudson of Dora, Al. and Mary Lou Hogan of Gainesville, Ga.; two brothers, Chuck Schultz of Hammond, Ind. and Russell Schultz of Dunmor; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at Price Funeral Home, Inc. in Lewisburg with Reverend James Hightower and Reverend Randy Wisdom officiating. Burial followed in Wyatt’s Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Martha Laffoon
GREENVILLE - Martha Ann Laffoon, 70, of Greenville, formerly of Dawson Springs (Charleston area), died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at her residence in Greenville.
Born March 24, 1932 in Hopkins County, she was the daughter of the late Adron and Claudia F. Hall Logan.She was a graduate of Charleston High School and was a member of the Inez Chapter of the Fraternal Order of the Eastern Star. She was a housewife and a member of Park Ave. Baptist Church in Madisonville. She was preceded in death by not only her parents but also her husband, Donald Lee Laffoon who died January 19, 1998, one sister and seven brothers.
Survivors include one daughter, Debra Ann McGhee of Greenville; two sons, Michael Lee Laffoon of Eddyville and David Logan Laffoon of Bremen; one sister, Maggie Lewis of Princeton; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 12, 2002 at Beshear Funeral Home, Inc. in Dawson Springs with Reverend Curtis McGhee officiating. Burial followed in Dunn Cemetery.

James Dunning, Sr.
CROFTON - James Dunning, Sr., 68, died at 11:55 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2002 at his home following a brief illness.
A native of Crofton, he was born October 15, 1933, the son of the late James Bradley and Braskie Anne Hamby Dunning. He was retired after 20 years as a precision machinist with McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft and had worked for Burns Security. He attended the Church of Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Dunning; eight sons, James Roy Dunning, Jr., of Clarksville, Tenn., Ronnie Gene Dunning of Alton, Ill., Roger Dean Dunning of Canada, Ricky Lynn Dunning of Dover, Del., Carl Glen Dunning and Kenneth Ray Dunning both of Hopkinsville, Kevin Earl Dunning of Nashville, Tenn. and Cory James Dunning of Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Donna) Hodge and Mrs. Thomas (Debbie Sue) Sims, both of Hopkinsville; three sisters, Christine McIntosh of Hopkinsville, Joyce Knight of Russellville and Murl Black of Clarksville, Tenn.; 32 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 9, 2002 at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville with Reverend Paul Hedge officiating. Burial followed in Dunning Cemetery.

James Harvey
LOUISVILLE - James Holland Harvey, 94, of Louisville died Friday, August 9, 2002 at Norton Hospital in Louisville.
Harvey was a coach at Greenville during the 1940’s and former superintendent of the Greenville School System. He graduated from Western Kentucky University, where he was a member of the W Club. Upon leaving Western, he then devoted his entire life to the field of education as a teacher, coach and administrator at Kuttawa High School, Greenville Independent Schools, Bardstown and Old Kentucky Home High Schools. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Janie Rogers Harvey and a brother, Edward Harvey.
Survivors include one daughter, Anne H. Ehrmann; one granddaughter, Anne E. Monell; two grandsons, J. Frederick and Christopher C. Ehrmann; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13, 2002 in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held at a later date in Boone, N.C.

Bobbie Agee
Bobbie Gray Agee, 74, of Bremen died at 8:32 p.m. Monday,
July 29, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health Care.
Born June 15, 1928 in Muhlenberg County, he was a machinist at
General Tool and Die in Evansville. He was a member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints and a life member of the VFW in Booneville, Ind. He
was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and was preceded in death by one son,
Richard Agee.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Miller Agee; two sons, Randall
(Vickie) Agee of Pelham, Al. and Joseph Agee of Selmer, Tenn.; one
daughter, Deborah (Fred) Goodall of Princeton, Ind.; one daughter-in-law, Carol
Agee of West Allis, Wis.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one
brother, Al Agee of Greenville; one half-brother, Shellie Fleming of
Greenville; one sister, Margie Renfrow of Newburgh, Ind.; his
step-mother,Erdine Agee of Beechmont; and eight half-sisters, Madeline Moore of
Henderson, Sue Stone of Victoria, Virginia, Betty Moore of Lewisburg,
Henrietta Smith of Evansville, Brenda Smith of Evansville, Helen Vaughn
of Lewisburg, Sharon Wilson of Beechmont and Teressa Perry of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Tucker
Funeral Home in Central City with Bishop Rickey Hoskins officiating and Joseph
Steele officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.

John Hunt
John Paul Hunt, 28, of Central City died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
Born March 23, 1974 in Lake Co., Ind., he was a truck driver at
Miller Building Supply in Sacramento. He was of the General Baptist faith.
Survivors include fiancee, Kimberly Michelle Hudson; two sons,
Brett Tyler Hunt of Belton and Nicholas Enian Hunt Huff of Greenville; one
daughter, Kalin Jace Hunt of Central City; his mother, Myrtle Hunt of
Drakesboro; two brothers, Randy Hunt and Danney Hunt, both of
Drakesboro; one sister, Dianna Gosson of Drakesboro; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Tucker
FuneralHome in Central City. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery.

John Davenport
John R. Davenport, 63, of L.A., California, formerly
of Central City, died at 7:56 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2002 in L.A., Calif.
Born March 6, 1939 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of the late
Garnett and Lucy Davenport. Survivors include one sister, Gracie M. Davenport of L.A.,
California.
Burial was held at the Nelson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on
Friday, August 2, 2002.

Darrel Uzzle
Darrel Edward Uzzle, 66, of Greenville died Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems in Owensboro.
Born January 4, 1936 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired crane
operator from US Steel in Gary, Ind. He was an Air Force veteran of the
Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal, UN Service
Medal, Korean Service Medal and Good Conduct. He enjoyed antiques and
was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Uzzle in 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Uzzle of Columbia, Maryland
and Sheila Hanewich of Rensselaer, Ind.; four brothers, Willis Uzzle of
Fulton, Eugene Uzzle of Central City, Paul Uzzle, Sr. of Central City and
Jewell Mercer of Beaver Dam; one sister, Mary Dockery of Beaver Dam; three
grandchildren, Matthew, Lauren and Brian Hanewich; one
great-granddaughter, Hailey; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Tucker Funeral
Home in Central City with Reverend Paul Uzzle, Jr., officiating. Burial
followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Fred Mohon
Fred Willard Mohon, 88, of Belton died Thursday, August 1,
2002 at 9:15 p.m. at his residence.
Born January 30, 1914 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of the
Late S.J. Mohon and Willie Catherine Mohon and retired from Emerson
Electric. He was a member of Myers Chapel United Methodist Church and made
furniture. He also was a farmer and owned his own farm. He was preceded in death by
his parents and his wife, Amanell Mohon.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Griffin of Greenville; and
two grandchildren, Melissa Grace Dukes of Brentwood, Tenn. and Cynthia
Grace Rutherford of Belton.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Price Funeral
Home in Lewisburg with Reverend Ken Vincent and Reverend Steve Rutherford
officiating. Burial followed in Jackson Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Raymond Jenkins
Raymond D. Jenkins, 77, of Dunmor died Friday, August 2,
2002 at 12:25 a.m. at Logan Memorial Hospital.
Born December 28, 1924 in Beech Creek, he was the son of the late
Leonard Jenkins and Edith Jenkins. He was a self-employed carpenter and
a member of Pleasant Union General Baptist Church where he taught Sunday
School for several years.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Vaughn of Dunmor; three
sisters, Hattie Hunt of Beechmont, Ann Walker of Belton and Dorothy Renure of
Philpot; one brother, Kenneth Ray Jenkins of Dunmor; and two
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Price Funeral Home
in Lewisburg with Reverend Chris Vaught and Reverend James Sharp
officiating. Burial followed in Dunmor Cemetery in Dunmor.

David Robinson
David Jewel Robinson, 74, of Drakesboro died at 12:30
a.m. Sunday, August 4, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in
Greenville.
Born August 17, 1927 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of the
Late Pat Robinson and Florence Kirby Robinson, and served as a World War II
veteran. He was a member of Union Chapel Church in Muhlenberg County.
He was a mechanic at L.B. Knight Motor Company in Greenville and service
manager at Henry-Cisney Chevrolet Garage for several years. Later he and his
brother owned and operated Robinson Body Shop and Garage from 1974 until his
retirement in 1995. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and spending time
with his family. He was preceded in death by not only his parents but also
one brother, C.R. Robinson; and four sisters, Ruth Williams, Shirley
Vincent, Jean Taylor and Becky Southerland.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Allen Robinson; one son,
Michael David Robinson of Greenville; one daughter, Debra Arnold of Drakesboro;
two grandsons, Chad Arnold of Owensboro and Jarrod Arnold of Drakesboro;
three brothers, Tommy, Carlyle and Paul Robinson all of Drakesboro; and one
sister, Christine McPherson of Calhoun.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Tucker
Funeral Home in Beechmont with Reverend Donnie Raymer officiating. Burial
followed in Union Chapel Cemetery.

Lisa Naron
Lisa Dee Naron, 31, of Bremen died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday,
August 4, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born September 19, 1970 in Muhlenberg County, she was a clerk and a
member of the Assembly of God in Greenville.
Survivors include her husband, Kenny Naron; one son, Nathan Naron
of Bremen; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stanley of Greenville; two
brothers, Jerry Stanley and Sam Stanley, both of Greenville; one sister, Lynn
Linsman of Owensboro; and her paternal grandmother, Mary Ann Stanley of
Greenville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Tucker
Funeral Home with Steve Latham officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem
Cemetery.

Roy Vincent
Roy Vincent, 68, of Greenville died Saturday, August 3,
2002 at 9:40 a.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Survivors include his wife, Freddie Vincent; one daughter, Kim
Maddox of Greenville; three sons, Alan Vincent of Greenville, Lee Vincent of
Greenville and Marty Vincent of Evansville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Travis Gooden
MADISONVILLE - Travis D. Gooden, 54, of Madisonville died at 1:31
a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at his residence.
Born January 16, 1948 in Chesterfield, S.C., he was the son of the
late Furman W. Gooden and Aletha May Cassidy Gooden. He was a member of
Parkview United Methodist Church in Madisonville. He was also Past Master of
Madisonville Masonic Lodge #143, Past Patron of Madisonville Chapter
Order of Eastern Star #390, Past District Deputy Grand Master of District 6
and a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and UMWA. He was
a U.S. Army Veteran, a Kentucky Colonel and a retired coal miner from
Island Creek Coal Company. He was preceded in death by his parents and one
brother,Gerald Lavern Gooden.
Survivors include his wife, Velma Bell Gooden of Madisonville; four
daughters, Martha Gooden and Mrs. Billy (Laura) Poole, both of
Madisonville, Mrs. Chris (Ellen) Hensley of Barbourville and Mrs. Mike (Cheryl) Green
of Central City; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Louise) Crowley of
Chesterfield, S.C.; one brother, Eugene Gooden of Dillon, S.C.; two grandchildren;
several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9, 2002 at
Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Reverend James Dill and Reverend
Bernard Allen officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in
Madisonville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mary
Kendall United Methodist Home for Children or the American Heart Association.

Thelma Jarvis
Thelma Jarvis, 93, died July 15, 2002 of Alzheimer¹s
disease at the Judson Village Retirement Community in Westwood.
She was the daughter of Lonnie and Beluah Stirsman. She was a
member of the Walnut Hills Baptist Church for more than 50 years, much of her
work was done through church boards. She is remembered for serving home-cooked
meals for hundreds. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross. In addition
to the Area Council award, she received a plaque from the Community Action
Commission in 1978 and recognition for 25 years of service to the
Victory of Neighborhood Services Agency in 1990. She was preceded in death by
Edward Jarvis, her husband of 55 years in 1985.
Survivors include three daughters Ge-Ann Hays of Walnut Hills,
Sandra Bishop of San Bernardino, Calif. and Sally Phelps of Walnut Hills; six
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Stirsman
of Central City and Bob Stirsman of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two sisters,
Barb Watts of Beaver Dam and Helena Jarvis of Beaver Dam.
Services have been held. Interment was at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Bernice Vincent
Bernice Shanks Vincent, 85, of Central City died at
7:42 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2002 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Born April 11, 1917 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a
member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Orvil Vincent and one son, Claude E. Vincent.
Survivors include one son, Dwight ³Skip² Vincent and wife, Anna of
Bowling Green; one daughter-in-law, Marie Vincent; nine grandchildren;
16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Pauline Vincent.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. at
Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Reverend C.W. Duncan officiating and
Reverend Gerald Jones and Reverend Billy Vincent both assisting. Burial
Will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.

Virginia M. Noffsinger
Powderly - Ms. Virginia M. Noffsinger, 77, of Central City died Friday,
June 14, 2002 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Ms. Noffsinger was born in Muhlenberg County on February 1, 1925. She
was a member of the Woodson Baptist Church for 42 years.
Survivors include two sons, Brad Noffsinger of Central City and Roger
Noffsinger of Greenville; one daughter, Linda Andreuss of Ft. Walton
Beach, Florida; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jewell Tucker of
Greenville.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Tucker Funeral Home
in Central City with Reverend Scott Casebier officiating. Burial
followed in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Old Bethel
Cemetery.

Harold David Freels
Greenville - Mr. Harold David Freels, 70, of Greenville died Thursday,
June 13, 2002 at his home in Greenville.
Mr. Freels was born in Hebbardsville, KY on May 5, 1932. He was a
retired car dealer and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army Korean
War Veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Wilma Allison Freels of
Greenville; one son, Shawn Freels of Greenville; two daughters, Vickie
Burke of Greenville and Phyllis Drake of Greenville; eight
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held in the Woodland Cemetery in Greenville.

R.D. Bozeman
Madisonville - Mr. R.D. Bozeman, 78, of Madisonville died Thursday, June
13, 2002 at the Senior Citizens Nursing Home in Madisonville after a
lengthy illness.
Mr. Bozeman was born in Russellville, AL on August 15, 1923. He was a
retired manager of an apartment complex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Pendley of Madisonville and
Kathy Ann Hawkins of Earlington; eight grandchildren; nine
great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bobby Bozeman of Decatur, AL;
and two sisters, Flossie Finley of Russellville, AL and Nettie Sue
Heaps of Hicksville, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Gary’s Funeral
Home with Reverend J.W. Haire officiating. Burial followed in
Russellville, AL.
