GREENVILLE Henry Godfrey Vincent, 85, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 28, 1921, he was a retired coal miner and a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of New Cypress Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 1/2 years, Mae Vincent.
Survivors include his wife of 3 1/2 years, Marie Mercer Vincent; three sons, James D. Vincent of Brownsville, Ky., Lynn Vincent and Vincent Vincent, both of Greenville; four daughters, Faye Stewart of Paducah, Judy Vincent, Ann Humphrey and Vicki Harvey, all of Greenville; two step-sons, John Wells of Midway and David Wells of Greenville; two step-daughters, Phyllis Dukes of Lewisburg and Joan Castellano of Waco, Tex.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one step-grandchild.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Drury and the Rev. Gene Harper officiating. Burial followed in New Cypress Cemetery in Greenville.
Sara Elizabeth Hankins
DUNMOR Sara Elizabeth Hankins, 89, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, in the Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville after a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 28, 1916, she was the daughter of Larry Oliver and Myrtle Carver Baugh. She was a charter member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor and she retired from Red Cap Manufacturing Company in Lewisburg after many years as a supervisor. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Byron Baugh; and her husband of 70 years, Holly Mendel Hankins Aug. 3, 2004.
Survivors include a son, Paul Dean (Carolyn) Hankins of Rosewood; two sisters, Juanita Silvey of Dunmor and Betty Shingledecker of Greenville; five grandchildren, Vickie (Keith) Peters of Memphis, Mark (Jane) Hankins of Greenville, Tammie (Dan) Lorden of St. Louis, Phillip (Gina) Hankins of Rosewood and Susan (Clay) White of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor with Mr. Tim Childs and the Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Burial followed in Dunmor Cemetery in Dunmor. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Estella Elizabeth Jones
POWDERLY Estella Elizabeth Jones, 97, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Maple Manor Healthcare in Greenville after several years’ illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Oct. 4, 1908, she was the daughter of George Washington and Minnie Mae Dempsey Reeves. She was a housewife and homemaker and was the oldest member of Mercer Missionary Baptist Church in Powderly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. R. O. Jones on March 8, 1957; her parents; a sister, Louise Evitts; and a brother, Bill Reeves.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Lee Jones of Powderly and Jennie Ruth (Woody) Ellington of Miamisburg, Oh.; one sister, Mary Alma Bivins of Powderly; one granddaughter, Denise (Gary) Smith of Dayton; and one great-granddaughter, Jaymi Smith of Dayton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at Mercer Missionary Baptist Church in Powderly with the Rev. Fred Harrison and the Rev. Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irene Clara Duvall Garris
GREENVILLE - Irene Clara Duvall Garris, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at her home.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Jan. 17, 1915 to the late Isaac Cooper Frederick and Ollie Bell Johnson Frederick. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Oble Leonard Duvall in 1956.
Survivors include her husband, W.G. Garris of Greenville; a daughter, Betty Collier of Grand Rivers, Ky.; four sons, Jack Duvall and Paul Duvall, both of Jasper, Ind., Clarence Duvall of Greenville, and Cooper Duvall of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Pauline Fife of Springfield, Ill.; two brothers, Foster Frederick of Granite City, Ill. and Cooper Frederick, Jr. of Grand Rivers; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Ezra Miller officiating. Burial followed in Vernal Grove Cemetery in Depoy.
Robert Lee “Bobby” Miller
SACRAMENTO Robert Lee “Bobby” Miller, 67, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 13, 1936 to the late Woodrow and Gertie Miller, he was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willodene Miller and a sister, Ruby Nell Harris.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Lee Miller of Bremen; two daughters, Lisa Michelle Miller and Kathy Miller, both of Bremen; five sisters, Lillian Lyons, Debbie Austin, and Donella Igleheart, all of Sacramento, Patty Woosley of Bremen, and Judy Oster of Mo.; six brothers, Curtis Miller, Harry Miller, Darrell Wayne Miller, Timmy Miller and Carroll Miller, all of Sacramento and Daniel Miller of Bremen.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18 at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with Rev. J.W. Haire officiating. Burial followed in Gish Cemetery in Bremen.
Helen Grace Bivins
GREENVILLE Helen Grace Bivins, 89, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 28, 1913 to the late Henry and Mary Dora Young, she was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert “Jim” Bivins in 1981; her daughter, Rosemay Bivins Gray in 1992, three sisters, Opal Noffsinger, Twymon Courtney, and Joyce Crick; and a brother T.F. Young.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty J. Sumner of Greenville and Patricia Dianne Hagan of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a son, William Y. Bivins of Newburgh, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Michael Gray of Riverside, Calif., Mark Sumner of St. Louis, Mo., Susan Leonard of Orlando, Fla., Stephanie Clark of Booneville, Tenn., Douglas Gray, Kristopher Gray, Kimberly Vincent, Deborah Daniels and Michael Wagner, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and five great-grandchildren.

Sherry Whitaker
POWDERLY Sherry Whitaker, 47, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville from Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 17, 1956 to James Jett and the late Audrey Jett, she was a devoted wife and mother. She was a former cook with both Muhlenberg Central and Muhlenberg North High Schools, and a member of Powderly Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Jett; her aunt and uncle, Floella and Zeek Rice; grandfather, Dewight Jett and grandparents, Frances and Dill Guy.
Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Oscar Whitaker, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Tim Morgan of Powderly; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vickie and Ronnie Shelton of Ill., and Michelle and Robert Piper of Powderly; a grandson, Seth Morgan; a niece, Jamie Johnson; and grandmother, Georgie Jett.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23 in Rose Hill Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Nila Faye Cottrell
Nila Fay Cottrell, 61, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 27, 1942, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Frank D. Cottrell; three sons, Frankie D. Cottrell, Kenneth Cottrell, and Noble Cottrell, all of Central City; two daughters, Bonnie Cottrell and Mary Tooley, both of Central City; her mother, Clara Mae Bradley of Central City; two brothers, Kenneth Bradley of Jackson, Tenn., and Franklin Bradley of Central City; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21 at Tucker Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Penrod and Bro. George Gray officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Clarence J. (C.J.) Taylor
GREENVILLE Clarence J. (C.J.) Taylor, 76, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at his home following several weeks of illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Aug. 4, 1927, he was retired from Kentucky Utilities Power Plant after 33 years. He served two years in the U.S. Army and recently received a 50 year pin from the Pond River Masonic Lodge #244 F. & A.M. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville where he served as a deacon and a chair member for 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Taylor; a daughter, Lisa Cooley of Madisonville; a son, Bruce Taylor of Madisonville; a sister, Emily Sue Willis of Fairfax, Va.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Gary McAbee and Rev. Rob Gwaltney officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Lucian Garland Moore
Lucian Garland Moore, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Trigg County, April 10, 1910, he was a retired construction worker and a member of Second Baptist Church in Hopkinsville. He was also a member of International Union Operational Engineers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Robbie Connie Moore.
Survivors include five sons, William Garland Moore of Richmond, Va., Gerald Ray Moore and James Roy Moore, both of Central City, Edward Moore of Henderson, and Ronnie Clay Moore of Gallatin, Tenn.; three daughters, Dorthy May Wilkey of Paducah, Ruby Marie Cunningham and Barbara Sue McBride, both of Central City; a sister, Edith Marie McCreary of Paducah; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Aileen C. Staples
Aileen C. Staples, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Sparks Nursing Home.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 8, 1921, she was retired from South Central Bell and a member of First Baptist Church in Central City.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Tucker Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Lowery officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly.
Willard Arnett
GRAHAM Willard Arnett, 88, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a sudden illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 3, 1915 to the late James Ellis Arnett and Mary Rebecca Tyson Arnett, he was a retired railroad engineer for Green River Steel in Owensboro after 24 years and a UMWA coal miner for 19 years. He was a member of Corley Chapel General Baptist Church in Graham. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Arnett, in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Billy Arnett of Graham; three daughters, Myrtle Wright of Graham, Faye Lyons of Greenville, and Deloris Worth of Philpot, Ky.; three brothers, Tommy Arnett and John L. Arnett, both of Graham, and Bobby Arnett of Depoy; a sister, Evelyn Tarrants of Graham; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Noe and Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Corley Chapel Cemetery.
Louise Ashby
SACRAMENTO Louise Ashby, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at Riverside Manor Health Care Center in Calhoun.
Born in Hopkins County, July 11, 1917 to the late Henry and Annie “Devine” Ashby. She was a former beautician and retired from G. E. Electric in Madisonville. She was a member of Pond River Baptist Church in Anton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ovie Ashby and two daughters, Betty Williams and Marjorie Mae Ashby.
Survivors include three sons, Floyd Ray Ashby of Sacramento, Henry Clay Ashby of Madisonville, and Earl Thomas Ashby of Owensboro; a daughter, Helen Ruth Rickard of Sacramento; three brothers, Raymond Venson of Evansville, Norman Venson of Wheatcroft, Ky., and David Venson of Fla.; a sister, Bobby June Bittner of Evansville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
