A native of Muhlenberg County, he was a former employee of US Airways and a member of Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Greenville.
Survivors include a daughter, Amber Browning; his mother, Katherine Browning; a brother, George Browning; and three sisters, Madelyn Bell, Sandra Davis and Joyce Browning.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25 at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in Westend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at G.C. Williams Funeral Home and after 11 a.m., Thursday at the church.
Joe T. Pentecost
GREENVILLE Joe T. Pentecost, 59, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Medical Center following a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, May 3, 1944 to the late Edgar and Novella Sullivan Pentecost, he was a retired coal miner from Peabody Gibraltar Coal Mines after 34 years. He was a member of Luzerne General Baptist Church and a former trustee and current church historian. He was a 1963 Muhlenberg Central High School graduate.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Wilodean (Sissy) Pentecost; a daughter, Vickie LaDon Brewster of Greenville; two sons, David Joseph Pentecost and Charles Jason Pentecost, both of Greenville; a sister, Brenda Walker of Greenville; two brothers, Jerry Glenn Pentecost and Michael Wayne Pentecost, both of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Schyler Pentecost, Hannah Brewster, McKenzie Pentecost, and Jaxon Pentecost.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Pharis and Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Tuesday and after 9 a.m., Wednesday also at Second Baptist Church. Gary’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Eula Mae Brown
OWENSBORO Eula Mae Brown, 79, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Health System of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, Oct. 20, 1923 to the late Lesslie and Kizzie Rager Settle, she was retired from General Motors in Pontiac, Mich. and a member of the Shalom Baptist Church in Pontiac and attended Third Baptist Church in Owensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Maurice Brown, in 1981.
Survivors include a son, William T. Brown of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Charlie Settle of Owensboro; two sisters, Rubie (Tennie) Kirkman and Ruthelle Laster, both of Elkton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with Rev. J. R. Craig officiating. Burial will follow in the Clifty Christian Church Cemetery in Clifty. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday and after 8 a.m., Wednesday at Latham Funeral Home.
Bertha S. Glidewell Campbell
ELKTON Bertha Swann Glidewell Campbell, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.
Born in Cross Plains, Tenn. Dec. 8, 1921 to the late Uwell and Priscilla Olive Swann Glidewell, she was co-owner and operator of Campbell’s Drug Store in Elkton for 46 years, a homemaker, teacher and bookkeeper and a graduate of Western Kentucky University. She was also a member of Petrie Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 50 years and coached men’s basketball at Clifty School. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Aubrey Gray Campbell in 2003.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. A.G. Campbell of Elkton, Dr. Duncan Campbell of Hopkinsville and Henry Brooke Campbell of Carrie, N.C.; a sister, Mary Ann Browning of Cross Plains; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton with the Rev. Will Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth at Melinda-Ryles-Smith at KYUMH, P.O. Box 749, Versailles, KY 40383. Latham Funeral Home in Elkton was in charge of arrangements.
Lillie M. Collier
CLAY Lillie Mae Collier, 79, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
She was a member of Corley Chapel General Baptist Church in Muhlenberg County for over 60 years and attended Star Hope General Baptist Church in Providence.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Robert Collier; three daughters, Diana Hall, Joan Nelson and Pam Ray, all of Clay; a son, Steve Collier of Henderson; a brother, James Edward Jarvis of Graham, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Vanover Funeral Home in Clay with Bro. Johnny Covington and Bro. Danny Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Oddfellows Cemetery in Clay.
Wilma J. Elschide
EVANSVILLE Wilma J. Elschide, 78, died Sept. 14, 2004 at North Park Nursing Center.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Elschide and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Clyde E. Elschide; four sons, Jimmy Elschide of St. Louis, Mo., Tony Elschide of Evansville, Dennis Elschide of Beech Grove, Ind. and Ricky Elschide of Washington, Okla.; a sister, Charlotte Noffsinger of Paris, Tenn.; two brothers, Philip Rice of Chicago and Wayne Rice of Greenville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 at Alexander North Chapel with the Rev. Charles Gordon officiating. Burial followed at Locust Hill Cemetery.
Joetta J. Gates
GREENVILLE Joetta Jones Gates, 69, died Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several months of illness.
Born in Greenville Aug. 13, 1935 to Arthur Guy Jones and Flossie Shutt Jones, she was a member of the Cave Springs Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Vechel Lee Gates; two sons, Harold (Penney) Gates of Greenville and Charles Randall (Brenda) Stanley of Lincolntown, N.C.; two step-daughters, Sandra Rolley and Phyllis Jones of Greenville; a brother, Roy Gene (Dean) Jones of Greenville; two sisters, Verlie Pendley and Muriel Jones, both of Greenville; five grandchildren, Tayler Gates, Kilee Gates, Rebecca Stanley, Jennifer Pool and Timothy Stanley; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Cavanaugh and Justin Pool and 11 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 17 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Shadowen officiating. Burial followed in Cave Springs Cemetery.
Donald R. (Johnny) Harkins
GREENVILLE Donald Ray (Johnny) Harkins, 62, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004 in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 29, 1941 to Lyndell Ray Harkins and Ruby Elizabeth Browning Harkins, he was a member of Sharon General Baptist Church in Greenville and an Army veteran. He was a member of Pond River Masonic Lodge #244 Greenville and retired from TVA Paradise steam plant in 2003 as a machinist foreman after 41 years.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Faye Carolyn Turner Harkins; a son, John Harkins of Greenville; two daughters, Stephanie Eaves and Elizabeth Schmidt, both of Greenville; a brother, Billy (Betty) Harkins of Greenville; four granddaughters, Emily Eaves, Kate Eaves, Nola Schmidt and Catherine Schmidt and three nieces, Lori Buttrum, Susan Fitzhugh and Andrea Hooper.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 16 at Lee Cemetery on Bancroft Road with Mr. Paul Moore and Mr. Robert Gardner officiating. Masonic services were conducted at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville.
Claudius R. Casebier
BURGIN, KY Claudius R. Casebier, 87, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County to the late R.A. and Cora Sumner Casebier, he was a retired senior systems supervisor for the Kentucky Utilities dispatch, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Burgin Baptist Church where he was a former trustee and greeter and member of the Young at Heart Class. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Dean Hays Casebier, a son Olson Casebier and a granddaughter, Sandra Olson.
Survivors include a son, Bud (Judy) Casebier of Paris; a daughter, Mary (Scott) Olson of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Clarence Casebier of Owensboro and Earl Casebier of Louisville; a sister, Mildred Wells of Greenville; four grandchildren, Krista Woodham, Meredith Olson, Lynn McKay and Lisa Casebier and two great-grandchildren, Cali Woodham and Sophia McKay.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Gary’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Depoy. Memorial contributions can be made to the Burgin Baptist Church building fund, the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Depoy or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Howard R. Knight
CLEARWATER, FLA. Howard Ray Knight, 53, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Dearborn, Mich. Nov. 26, 1951, he was employed by Aerospace as a satellite monortiny.
Survivors include his wife, Lorenza Knight of Panama, Fla; a son, Michael Knight of Panama; a daughter, Michelle Knight of Panama; his father and stepmother, Howard Glendel and Dosha Knight of Drakesboro; two brothers, Bruce Knight of Clearwater and Kenny Knight of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Glenda Friday of Tumbo, Texas and Betty Stocker of Canyon, Texas; a step brother, Dean Penrod and three step-sisters, Jeannie Bullock, Marcia Hatton and Marlene Sanders.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Pendley and Gene McGhee officiating. Burial followed in Forest Oak Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.
Nell McElvain
POWDERLY Nell McElvain, 58, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at her residence.
Born in Hopkins County Feb. 10, 1946 to Seldon and Mary Taylor, she was employed by Dame Enterprise and a member of Mt. Pisgah Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lewis and Alton Taylor and a step-daughter, Tammy Everly.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald McElvain; two daughters, Tammy Tabb of Greenville and Denise Bean of Powderly; a stepson, Allen McElvain of Sacramento; two brothers, Randall Taylor of Florida and Harold Taylor of Madisonville; two sisters, Jean Davis of Madisonville and Helen Wyatt of West Virginia; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Everly officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens in Powderly.
Chyenne R. Groves
DRAKESBORO Chyenne Renee Groves, infant, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 2004 she was the daughter of Timothy Groves and Jerrah Williams.
Survivors include her parents; four brothers, Darrin Howell and Ethan Williams of Drakesboro, Cody Brumson of Providence and Zackery Cobb of Nortonville; two sisters, Kesha Cobb of Nortonville and Brittany Stanley of White Plains; and her grandparents, Raymond and Donna Smith of Drakesboro and Jerry and Dorothy Beeler of Central City.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at Graham Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Carrel K. Sumner
BOWLING GREEN - Carrel K. Sumner, 66, of Bowling Green died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at his home. He was born Jan. 25, 1939, and was a chief executive officer for Commonwealth Specialty Hospital in Bowling Green. He began his career in health care in 1957 as an orderly at Bowling Green-Warren County Hospital and continued to work with Commonwealth Health Corp. and The Medical Center, where he was currently serving as chief executive officer for the Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital. The Greenville native was also a former teacher at Greenville High School. He currently taught the adult Sunday school class at Plano Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and served on various health related committees at Western Kentucky University, where he was an alumnus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Florence Sumner.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Sumner of Bowling Green; two daughters, Emily Sumner of Bowling Green and Terri Tyler and husband, Rico, of Franklin; two brothers, Harold E. Sumner and wife, Betty, of Greenville and Bob Cummings and his wife, Patty, of Houston; two grandchildren, Robin and Ryan Tyler of Franklin; a brother-in-law, Buell Snyder and wife, Judy, of Shephardsville; a sister-in-law, Betty Hardison of Bowling Green; his mother-in-law, Jean Snyder of Clarkson; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 8 at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels Inc., Lovers Lane chapel in Bowling Green. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.
Charles W. Thompson
PULASKI, TENN - Charles W. Thompson, 69, formerly of Greenville died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Louisville May 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Charles and Melvina Thompson. He was a self-employed contractor and owner of Thompson Brothers Lumber Co. which later became Buster Boys Lumber Company and a member of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church in Central City. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raleigh Thompson, Randell Thompson and Winfred Thompson.
Survivors include three daughters, Amy Trimble of Pulaski, Donna Anderson of Central City and Patty Bunch of Fairbury, Ill.; two step-sons, Larry McCormick and Gary McCormick, both of Central City; two brothers, John Mark Thompson and Richard Thompson and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 29 at Giles County Funeral Home in Pulski, Tenn. with Dr. Doug Plumlee officiating. Burial followed in Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore, Ala.
Wilbern Blake
ALLEGRE - Wilbern Blake, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005 at Hearthstone Place in Elkton of natural causes.
Born in Todd County Nov. 13, 1920, he was the son of the late Eldon and Bertha Sears Blake. He was a farmer, a member of Bellview Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army WWII veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Berta Blake; a son, Gary Blake of Allegre; a daughter, Vivian Higgins of Evansville, Ind.; a sister, Pauline Settle of Hopkinsville; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 19 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Tommy Wilhite officiating. Burial followed in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville.
Christopher “Chris” Lee Wood
SHARON GROVE - Christopher “Chris” Lee Wood, 16, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Christian County Aug. 9, 1989, he was the son of Charles Ellis Wood, Jr. of Russellville and Judy Ann Rager Risley of Sharon Grove. He was a Junior at Todd Central , a member of the Todd Central FFA and attended the Antioch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Seldon Rader.
Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Charles Whitney Wood and Joshua Adam Wood, both of Oak Grove and Brandon Risley of Sharon Grove; two sisters, Jennifer Marie Willoughby of Murray and Chessie Leann Price of Oak Grove; his grandparents, Charles and Velma Wood of Russellville and Velda Louise Rager of Sharon Grove and a nephew.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Ron Wells officiating. Burial followed in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville.
