Thurman Henry Ellis

SLAUGHTERS - Thurman Henry Ellis, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Hopkins County May 29, 1928, he was the son of the late John Henry and Nadine Austin Ellis. He was a retired equipment operator at Peabody Coal Company’s Gibraltar Mine in Muhlenberg County, a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Betty Leath Ellis; a son, Wade Ellis of Madisonville; five daughters, Debbie Ellis Wilson of Onton, Ky., Phyllis Ellis Hodges and Abby Ellis, both of Ashbyburg, Ky., Laura Kemp of Jackson, Tenn. and Beth Stutler of Madisonville; a sister, Helen Harbison of Evansville, Ind.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Tompkins Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel with the Rev. Harry Baldwin and the Rev. Alec Hensley officiating. Burial followed in the Onton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Gilead General Baptist Church.

Leslie Sweeney

HOPKINSVILLE - Leslie Sweeney, 89, died Thursday, Sept. 8 at Belle Meade Nursing Home after a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 17, 1916, he was the son of the late Ganow Sweeney and Rosie Shutt Sweeney. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church in Hopkinsville.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Margie Lucille Garrett Sweeney; a son, the Rev. Kenneth (Thelma) Sweeney of Hopkinsville; two brothers, Gene Sweeney of Drakesboro and Darrell Sweeney of Las Vegas, Nev. and two granddaughters, Crystal (Mark) Sweeney Groves and Erica Sweeney, both of Hopkinsville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at Joines Chapel Church in Greenville with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John Phillip “J.P.” Steele

BELTON - John Phillip “J.P.” Steele, 83, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 1, 1922, he was a retired coal miner and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Beech Creek Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include his wife, DeWeese Latham Steele; two sons, Phillip Wayne Steele of Greenville and Timmy Steele of Beechmont; three daughters, Jean Loney and Doris Shemwell, both of Beech Creek, and Sherril Dukes of Greenville; a brother, Billy Steele of Louisville; a half-brother, Floyd Steele; four half-sisters, Stella Dwyer, Emma Garrett, Hilda Staples and Wanda Long; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with Bro. Roy Loney and the Rev. David Penrod officiating. Burial followed in Wyatt Chapel Cemetery in Beech Creek.

Michael Lynn Ray

ELKTON - Michael Lynn Ray, 53, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, in Lewisburg, Ky.
Born in Greenville, he was a deliveryman for Car Quest Auto Parts. He was of the General Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Alma Ruth Phillips Ray.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Groves Ray; a son, Darian Ray of Clifty; a daughter, Michelle Ray Knight of Lewisburg; a half-sister, Nicole Ray of Madisonville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg with the Rev. James Lear officiating. Burial followed in Heltsley Cemetery in Clifty.

John Walton Smith, Jr.

John Walton Smith, Jr., 23, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at his residence.
Born in Evansville Nov. 8, 1982, he was an edger man for Summit Timber in White Mills, Ky. He loved hunting and fishing and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Moorman.
Survivors include his fiancé, Patricia Smallwood of Leitchfield; his mother, Gearldine Smith of Moorman; his father, John W. Smith, Sr., of Florida; four brothers, Jessey Mofield, Jr., Robert Mofield and Ed Mofield, all of Ind. and John Steven Smith of Tenn.; six sisters, Charlene Stanley of Powderly, Darline Bullock and Dalleta Smith, both of Moorman, Shellina Edwards of Cleaton, Stacy Case of Livermore, Laura Smith and Lisa Smith, both of Tenn.; and several nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Taylor and the Rev. Mickey McPherson officiating. Burial followed at New Hope Cemetery in Moorman.

Bonnie M. Tarrants

Bonnie M. Tarrants, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Maple Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 25, 1926, she was a retiree from General Electric. She was a member of First Baptist Church and worked in the church’s nursery for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Tarrants, in 1986, and a daughter, Cheryl Tarrants, in 1954.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Edwards, of Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister, Rena Vincent of Clarksville; and two grandchildren, Chad Edwards and Zachary Edwards, both of Clarksville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Lowery officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Martha Jane Shaver

Martha Jane Shaver, 75, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 27, 1931, she was a retired office clerk for Lester Motors in Central City and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Central City.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Shaver; a son, Richard (Mary) Shaver of Central City; a daughter, Martha Lynn (Ronnie) Vincent of Central City; her mother, Mary “Frankie” Chandler of Central City; a grandchild, Danielle Shaver; and three step-grandchildren, Troy Vincent, Carina Freeman and Emily Stevenson.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 11 at Tucker Funeral Home with Dr. Kevin Brown and the Rev. Brian Martin officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

Evans Phillips

Evans Phillips, 78, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems.
Born in Muhlenberg County Oct. 23, 1927, he was a retiree from Chrysler and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of Bremen Masonic Lodge #596. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Dean Phillips; a daughter, Paula Raimey; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Joe Phillips; two daughters, Debbie King of Florida and Kay Vick of Central City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. J.W. Haire officiating. Burial followed at Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.
Masonic services were held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Tucker Funeral Home.

James “Jim” Fields, Sr.

James “Jim” Fields, Sr., 73, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.
Born in Muhlenberg County June 6, 1933, he was a retired Boiler Maker for Local 40. He was a member of Central City Masonic Lodge and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Fields.
Survivors include a son, James “Jimmy” Fields of Central City; three daughters, Pam Lyons and Paula Mock, both of Elkton and Peggy Glenn of Guthrie; a brother, Les Fields of Bremen; three sisters, Jo Fields and Betty Johnson, both of Central City and Frances Uzzle of Nelson Creek; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 13 with the Rev. Donnie Wilkins officiating at Tucker Funeral Home with burial following in Nelson Creek Cemetery.

Mary Edna Vincent

COLUMBUS, IND. - Mary Edna Vincent, 97, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, in Columbus, Ind.
Born in Muhlenberg County April 12, 1909, she was the daughter of the late C.C. “Bud” and Norah Woodall. She attended Columbus Bible Students Ecclesia in Columbus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Elbert” Vincent; a daughter, Nell Miller; four brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include a daughter, Genon Davis of Columbus, Ind.; a son, Charles B. Vincent of Columbus, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Eva Blizzard of Central City.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Dan Ledwinka officiating. Burial followed in Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum.

Ed Fowler

ELKTON - Ed Fowler, 81, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Hearthstone Place in Elkton of natural causes.
Born in Olmstead, Ky., Sept. 21, 1924, to the late Charlie and Jessie Self Fowler, he was retired from Carl Hadden Chevrolet Body Shop and owned and operated Ed’s Custom Cages. He was a member of the Pea Ridge Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Irene Fowler; three sons, Eddie Fowler, Jr., Dale Fowler and Larry Fowler, all of Elkton; one daughter, Mary Ann Reid of Hopkinsville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 13 at Latham Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Fowler, Jr. and the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Bobby G. Styers

PADUCAH - Bobby G. Styers, 61, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 at his residence in Kevil, Ky.
Mr. Styers was a native of Paducah and a member of the Heath Church of Christ. He was a avid fisherman and a member of the Lake Malone Fishing Club, boiler maker and a member of the Boilermakers Union Local 40.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Littlefield Styers of Kevil; one son, Bobby G. Styers II of Kevil; two daughters, Carol Wiggins of Kevil and Dawn Dowell of Boaz; three sisters, Pam Carr of Fisherville, Kay Hardin of Scottsburg, Ind. and June Hawkins of New Albany, Ind. Eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at Keeling Family Funeral Home with Chris Renfrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodsville Cemetery.

Lola Belle Broom Judd
DOYLE, TENN. ­ Lola Belle Broom Judd, 86, of Doyle, Tenn., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Life Care Center of Sparta, Tenn.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in White County, Tenn., the daughter of W.B. Broom and Daisy Harris Broom, she was a social service employee of L.B.J.C. Her parents; husband, Edd Judd; daughter, Daisy McDole; son Jimmy Judd; two infant daughters; and two sisters, Lena Knight and Alyne Morris, preceded her in death.
Survivors include four sons, Frank Judd and Johnny Judd both of Sparta, Tenn., Bill Judd of Doyle, Tenn. and Rob Judd of Smithville, Tenn.; eight daughters, Frances Holcomb of Dunlap, Tenn., Sue Jones of Rock Island, Tenn., Becky Martin of Livingston, Tenn., Carolyn Smith, Joyce Jones, Ruthie Kelsey and Kathy Driver, all of Sparta, Tenn. and Lena Humphrey of Walling, Tenn.; a sister, Helen Allen of Ky.; 43 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 4, 2003 at Greenwood Baptist Church with the Revs. Lloyd Kerr and Garvin Haley officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery in Tennessee. Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jeanne F. France

HOPKINSVILLE, KY. ­ Jeanne Francoise France, 61, of Hopkinsville, Ky., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 21, 1941, in France, she was the daughter of the late Claude Joseph and Celestine Josephine Diebold Mager. She was a waitress and housekeeper and a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Rosary Makers, St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband, Elbert Ray France; a son, Anthony Ray France; a daughter, Diana L. Hudson; a foster daughter, Diane Quarles, all of Hopkinsville; a sister, Laurette Mager of Lixheim, France; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 30, 2003 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl McCarthy officiating. Burial followed in Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Hughart and Beard Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

William Ray Matheney

GRAHAM ­ William Ray Matheney, 75, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 15, 1927, in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of George Wesley Matheney and Maudielee Martin Matheney. He retired in 1979 as a UMWA coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company after 10 years. He was a member of Elkton Road Church of Christ and a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He graduated from Graham High School in 1947. One son, Dennis Wayne Matheney, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dana Moore Matheney; a daughter, Celesta Lile of Bremen; three sons, Kendall Matheney and Jeff Matheney, both of Greenville and Darrell Matheney of Graham; three brothers, George and Jack Matheney of Evansville, Ind., Ralph Matheney of Graham; one sister, Wanda Steele, of Graham; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 5, 2003 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Jeff Jenkins and Larry Perkins officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Elkton Road Church of Christ or the Muhlenberg County Children’s Fund.
