SACRAMENTO - Ruth Ina Devine Keith, 65, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005 at Regional Medical Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 26, 1940, she enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her granddaughter.
Survivors include her mother, Alma Devine of Sacramento; a son, Tony Keith of Danville; a daughter, Vicki Young of Lexington; two brothers, Gerald Devine of Newburg, Ind. and Earl Devine of Sacramento; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 1 at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with Brother John Butler officiating. Burial followed in Free Union Cemetery in Sacramento. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or Free Union Cemetery, c/o Earl Devine, 1184 Ky. 254 West, Sacramento, KY 42372.

Ruby Jean Peveler

UTICA - Ruby Jean Peveler, 66, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 13, 1939, she was a homemaker and attended Grace Chapel in Philpot. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Bobby Ray Peveler.
Survivors include her son Michael R. Peveler of Utica; a daughter, Cindy A. McGehee of Owensboro; a sister, Nell Sumner of Owensboro; four grandchildren, Mike Woodard, Christopher Peveler, Kayla Peveler and Matthew Peveler; two great-grandchildren, Michael Anthony Woodard and Brooklyn Lee and an uncle, Ed Latham of Owensboro.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 1 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Young officiating. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Nona Jane (Neal) Spears

EVANSVILLE - Nona Jane (Neal) Spears, 71, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005.
Born in South Carrollton Aug. 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Euna Mae Bullock Neal and Willie Lee Neal. She was preceded in death and will be welcomed into her heavenly home with open arms by her three precious granddaughters, Brittany Spears, Dacia Spears and Mandy Spears and two brothers, Cordell Neal and Billy Neal.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Freddie D. Spears; two daughters, Pamela (Paul) Robinson of Newburgh, Ind. and Cindy Ann Spears of Evansville; three sons, Darrell (Jackie) Spears of Newburgh, Ind. and Freddie D. Spears and Jeremy J. Spears, both of Evansville; seven grandchildren, Olivia Spears, Jason and Jennifer Watkins, Holly Watkins, Summer and Zach Mays and Bridgette Wilkerson Gross and six great-grandchildren, Jacob Pritchard, Madilyn Watkins, Nicholas Watkins, Luke Watkins, Preston Mays and Claudia Robinson.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 1 at Browning Funeral Home with Pastor Rick VanHoose officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice Care Center, 600 Mary St., Evansville, IN 47747.

Raymond D. “Sunshine” Walker

LOUISVILLE - Raymond D. “Sunshine” Walker, 63, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005.
Born in Central City Dec. 9, 1941, he was the son of Mary Riley Walker Mayes and the late Earnest Walker. He was a retired employee of the Phillip Morris Tobacco Company and a member of Burnett Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond L. Walker, Robert B. Walker; a daughter, Rhonda Walker; five step children, Purvis, Theodric and Jack Garner, Annie Savage and Jill Nesbeth; his mother; two brothers, Ernest Walker and Floyd Walker and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 1 at Burnett Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville with the Rev. Johnnie Clark officiating. Burial followed in the Louisville Cemetery. Hathaway & Clark Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Bobbie Lee Cook, Sr.

Bobbie Lee Cook, Sr., 73, died Thurs. Sept. 1, 2005 at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Taylorville, Ill.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 9, 1932, he was a retired coal miner, a member of Powderly Methodist Church and served in the Korean War.
Survivors include two sons, Bobbie Cook, Jr. of Dunmor and Tim Cook of Taylorville, Ill.; two daughters, Laquita Spitzner of Hazlehurst, Miss. and Kay Givens of Tovey, Ill.; three brothers, James Cook, Eddie Cook and Tom Cook; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 5 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Wolfe officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

Bennie Rex McGuire

Bennie Rex McGuire, 62, formerly of Bowling Green, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Born to the late Bennie McGuire and Arnettie Reneau McGuire, he was a retired roofing contractor and a Vietnam Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Atwell McGuire and a brother, Harold “Shorty” McGuire.
Survivors include a son, Chris (Dianne) McGuire, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Richard (Alma) McGuire, of Woodburn, Ky.; a sister, Martha McGuire Raymer, of Central City; two grandchildren, Lauren McGuire and Ryan McGuire; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

L. J. Turley

L. J. Turley, 84, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at the V. A. Hospital in Nashville.
Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 10, 1921, he had owned Turley Transfer Co. since 1949 and was a member of Central City First United Methodist for 70 years. He was a member of American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge, Shriner, Rizpah Temple, past president of the Muhlenberg County Fair Board, Central City Lions Club, past president and board member of Kentucky Association of Fair and Horse Shows and a 1940 graduate of Central City High School. He was a past member of Central City Council and his hobbies were rabbit hunting and fishing. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Robards Turley; two sons, Lonnie (Kathy) Turley and Rick (Lori) Turley, both of Central City; a step-son, Eddie Mitchell, of Central City; a step-daughter, Danna (Ken) Christman, of Athens, Tenn.; a brother, Marion Choyce Turley, of Mayock, N.C.; three sisters, Rebecca Peterson, of Molyne, Ill., Vivian McDonald, of Waterloo, Ill. and Anna Stanley, of Central City; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff DiMatties officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Hobert Ferguson

JACKSONVILLE, FL.– Hobert Ferguson, 80, formerly of Central City, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 16, 1925, he served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II before returning home to start a business. He was an accomplished machinist and loved to work around his home making improvements or gardening. He was a devoted Christian and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He was a kind and generous man, knew no strangers and was well known for his big smile and sense of humor. He touched many people throughout his life and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Eldora Draper Ferguson, his three children, Linda Ferguson, Karen Caliendo Ferguson and James Randall Ferguson and many other family and friends.
Survivors include a brother, O.V. Ferguson and two grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Smith and Don (Bobbie) Caliendo.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Hollis Meloy Slaughter

BEECHMONT – Hollis Meloy Slaughter, 68, died Sunday, Sept. 4 at Jennie Stuart Medical Facility in Hopkinsville.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 16, 1936, he was a retired meter reader from Owensboro Municipal Utilities and a member of Horton’s Chapel Church of Christ in Belton.
Survivors include his wife, Faith Talley Slaughter; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Slaughter, of Le Grange, Ky. and Holly Gail Goodwin, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; two sisters, Junie Joines of Beechmont and Wilma Jean Joines of Henderson; a granddaughter; a niece and a nephew.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with Paul Moore officiating. Burial followed in Horton’s Chapel Church Cemetery in Belton.

Helen Louise Foster Vincent

DANVILLE, KY – Helen Louise Foster Vincent, 89, formerly of Central City, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.
Born in Glasgow Oct. 24, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Clem Foster and Lucy Belle Slaughter Foster. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Danville and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Central City. She was a graduate of the Owensboro Beauty College, a licensed beautician and the former owner of Helen’s Beauty Shop in Central City. She was a certified welder and worked at the shipyards in Evansville during World War II welding LST landing ships for the Navy.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki (Marlin) Sparks, of Danville; two grandchildren and a great granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sept. 6 at First Baptist Church in Danville with the Rev. J. Timothy Mathis officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at Tucker Funeral Home.
The family requests donations be sent to the First Baptist Church Building Fund in Danville or Central City.

Stella L. Haithcoat

CLARKSVILLE, TN – Stella L. Haithcoat, 85, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at her residence.
Born Dec. 9, 1919, she was the owner/operator of Chenille Gifts. She was preceded in death by a son, Joe Young, in 1979 and a husband, Archie Young, in 1952.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Haithcoat; five sons, Cleo Young, of St. Charles, Ky., Clifford Young, of Apex, Ky., Milburn Young, of Lewisburg, Ky., Morris Haithcoat, of Southside, Tenn., and Johnny Haithcoat, of Keysburg, Ky.; three daughters, Mercie Lee, of Greenville, Violet Wadlington, of Princeton and Nancy Workman, of Dawson Springs; 24 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Cook-Webb Funeral Home in Guthrie with the Rev. Lyle A. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Bridge Cemetery in north Christian County. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 6 at Cook-Webb Funeral Home.

Finis Willis

EVANSVILLE, IND. ­ Finis Willis, 93, of Evansville, died Wednesday, Aug.27, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital.
Born and raised in Belton, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II and a member of V.F.W. Post No. 1114. He was a member of the 12th Avenue Baptist Church and a charter member of Westwood Baptist Church. He loved singing, woodworking, and gardening. In 1975, Willis retired as a section laborer with L and N Railroad, after 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes Willis; a daughter, Linda G. Husky; a son, W. Dale Willis both of Evansville; six grandchildren, one step-grandchild; and two great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Westwood Baptist Church with the Revs. John O. Sloan and Rev. Rodney Sloan officiating. Burial followed in Alexander Memorial Park, Alexander West Chapel was in charge of arrangement.

Gladys Ford Bates

OMAHA, NEB. ­ Gladys Ford Bates, 76, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Island, Ky., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.
Born April 3, 1927 in Drakesboro, she was the daughter of John and Zella Ford. She was a homemaker and formerly attended the Church Street Baptist Church in Bremen. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 47 years, Ernest Bates, Sr., a son, Paul Bates, brother, Charles Ford, and a sister, Mary Bates.
She is survived by three sons, Ernest Bates, Jr. of Island, Dan Bates of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Ed Bates of Neola, Iowa; two daughters, Sharon Grosse of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Judy Wood of Omaha; four brothers, Bill Ford of Jacksonville, Fla., Sidney Ford of Bremen, Henry Ford of Owensboro and Roy Ford of Greenville; one sister, Mary “Patty” Phillips of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug.30, at Muster Funeral Homes in Calhoun with the Rev. Danny Greene officiating. Burial followed in Island Community Cemetery in McLean County. Expressions of sympathy take the for of donations to the Gladys For Bates, Memorial Fund; C/O Muster Funeral Homes; P.O. Box 160; Calhoun, Kentucky 42327.

Rufus Jr. (Jay) Brown

MOUNTAIN HOME, TENN. ­ Rufus Jr. Brown, 80, of Mountain Home, Tenn., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Brown was a native of Kentucky and a son of the late Rufus Sr. and Kate Steele Brown. He was a retired machinist and a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Oliver Brown; three sisters, Fannie Dodge, Martha Locke and Lucille Larson; and one brother, William Brown.
He is survived by three sons, Jerry Brown and Johnny Gregory both of Rock Hill, S.C., and Robert Brown, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one brother, James Brown, Ft. Mitchell, Ala.; three sisters, Sue Shepherd, Tampa, Fla., Betty McAlpin, Ft. Michell, Ala. and Jean Lewis, Bitely, Mich.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were held Friday, Aug. 29, at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., with the VA Chaplain officiating. The Appalachian Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Flonnie Sue Erwin

DRAKESBORO ­ Flonnie Sue Erwin, 67, of Drakesboro, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at her home in Drakesboro.
Born March 2, 1936 in Muhlenberg County she was a member of the Greenville First Assembly of God.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Erwin; one son, Michael Erwin, Portland, Texas; three daughters, Debra Sundlberg, The Colony, Texas, Laura Goin, Three Rivers, Texas, and Tracy Jordan, Peoria, Ariz.; two brothers, Ed Sullivan, Griffith, Ind. and Harold Sullivan, Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Mary Alice Heltsley, Central City; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery in Greenville.
