Virgil Douglas Scott, 75, of Central City, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at the Sparks Nursing Home in Central City after a lengthy illness.
Born June 22, 1928 in Muhlenberg County, the son of Charles Thomas Scott and Jenny Geneva Smith Scott, he was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by one sister, Beulah Evans of Chandler, Ind.; and one niece, Patricia Smith of Greenville.
Graveside services and burial were held Monday, Aug. 18, at New Cypress Cemetery in Greenville with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating.
David Neil Arnold
GREENVILLE David Neil Arnold, 54, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Boulder, Colo., June 20, 1950, he was a monument worker and a sandblaster. He was preceded in death by a son, David N. Arnold and a brother, Ralph Arnold.
Survivors include his wife, Nora June Arnold; a daughter, Tammy Berry of Chaffen, Mo.; a son, Daniel Arnold of Greenville; a step-son, David Allan Rajack of Chicago, Ill.; a step-daughter, Natasha Gallaty of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Betty Hacker of Sepurior, Colo. and Darlene Allen of Princeton; and three grandchildren.
Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Adam R. Benton
ELKTON Adam R. Benton, 29, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. due to injuries he sustained in a car wreck.
Born in Clarksville, Tenn., May 2, 1975, he was employed by the Logan County Detention Center where he was a Deputy Jailer, a member of the SWAT team and a member of the Elkton Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his father, Rabourn Benton of Trenton; his mother, Linda Adams Benton of Trenton; his grandmother, Eva D. Benton of Guthrie; his fiancé, Marsha Glidwell of Greenville; and two sisters, Amanda Stokes of Elkton and Alesha Benton of Pembroke.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Elkton Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mitch Hedge officiating. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery in Trenton. Latham Funeral Home in Elkton was in charge of arrangements.
Marie Gatton Phillips
SACRAMENTO Marie Gatton Phillips, 92, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at the Hermitage Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Owensboro.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 7, 1911, to the late Harry William and Edith Pearl Gatton Sr., she was a retired English and speech teacher after 40 years of service in both McLean and Muhlenberg counties. She graduated from Bremen High School in 1929, attended the Bethel Women’s College and graduated from Western Kentucky State Teachers’ College in 1936. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bremen and started the Bethlehem Baptist Church library where she remained church librarian for 13 years. Marie also served as a N.E.A. delegate from Kentucky’s Second Educational District of 2,200 teachers and at the grade school level of teaching introduced the “unit” method. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Phillips; her second husband, Frank Luysterburg; and two brothers, Harry W. Gatton Jr. and Charles W. Gatton.
Survivors include a brother C.M. “Bill” (Leigh) Gatton of Kingsport, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Gatton of Rumsey and Lorene Gatton of Bremen; a nephew, Charles W. Gatton Jr. of Bremen; three nieces, Suzane Gatton of Owensboro, Charlotte Cobun of Morgantown, W.Va. and Chase Gatton of Kingsport, Tenn.; two great-nephews, Brent Gatton and Cord Cobun; and a great-niece, Christen Marie Gatton-Stokes.
Funeral services were held at 11 am. Aug. 14 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bremen with the Rev. Michael Rust, the Rev. Patrick E. McDowell and the Rev. Roy Ellis officiating. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery. Miriam (Dockins) Higgs
MANITOU - Miriam (Dockins) Higgs, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at her residence.
Born in Augusta, Ga., Aug. 16, 1928, to the late Joseph M. and Viola Corley Dockins, she was a homemaker and member of the Eastern Star of the Bremen Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester Higgs; a sister, Annie Dean Sellers; a son, Larry Higgs; and a grandson, Chad Higgs.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Higgs of Manitou; two daughters, Diana Rone of Manitou and Brenda Kaye Gibson of Corydon; a sister, Shirley Jacob of Janesville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

John Oliver Street III
ELKTON John Oliver Street III, 68, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.
Born in Todd County, April 27, 1936 to the late George Parke Street III and Martha Alice Dickson Street, he worked as a security guard and deputy jailer and was a member of the Elkton Christian Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Libby Sugg.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Street of Clarksville, Tenn., Eddy Street of Lexington and George Street IV of Alabama; two daughters, Frances Traughber of Elkton and Emily Bates of Alabama; two sisters, Ellen Nealy of Russellville and Katie Street of Clarksville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at Latham Funeral Home with Dr. Brooks Major and the Rev. Tommy Wilhite officiating.
James Brank “Red” Slaughter
James Brank “Red” Slaughter, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Todd County, Sept. 17, 1916, he was a retired welder from P&M Paradise Mine and a member, Sunday school teacher, and elder of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. He was a Kentucky Colonel, inventor, avid fisherman and football fan. He was known as “Mr. Red” to many former Central City Elementary students for teaching time, measurements and counting money. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian M. Gossett Slaughter on Dec. 22, 1999; a sister, Ethel Slaughter; and three brothers, Elwood, J.G. and Vernon Slaughter.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Brenda Sue (Lane) Casebier, Betty Joyce Thomas, Mary Alice (Gary) Divine and Sarah Ann (Jim) Brown, all of Central City; a sister, Mildred Wilson of Lebanon, Ind.; nine grandchildren, William Allen Ashby, Timothy Lane (Frankie) Ashby, Laura Lynn Thomas (Allen) Polk, Amy Carol Divine (Joey) Draper, Jeremy Robert Divine, Kathryn Brown House, Monte (Lynette) Casebier, Marty (Megan) Casebier and Micah (Sabrina) Casebier; 11 great-grandchildren, Natalie Ashby (Larry) Stallings, Coty Wynn, Robert Davis, Langley Polk, Gaven House, Krysta House, Alex Draper, Erin Draper, Alex Casebier, Nicholas Casebier and Eden Blair Casebier; special caregivers, Tallie Miller, Brenda Jarvis and Debbie Williams.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at Tucker Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Brown of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Everett C. Rolley
GREENVILLE Everett C. Rolley, 94, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Feb. 8, 1910, to the late William Rolley and Dora Ellen McElvain Rolley, he was a U.M.W.A. coal miner for Wright Coal Company in Beech Creek. He retired in 1971 after 30 years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Edna Washington Rolley on April 12, 1977.
Survivors include two brothers, G. B. (Mildred) Rolley of Greenville, William Edge (Juanita) Rolley of Evansville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 at Gary’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in Corley Chapel Cemetery in Graham.
Edna Merle Fleming
HENDERSON - Edna Merle Fleming, 71, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Henderson.
Born in Butler County, Feb. 6, 1933 to the late Oliver and Rachel McPherson Knight, she was a retired nurse with Gibson General Hospital in Princeton, Ind. She attended Gilleyville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Fleming.
Survivors include a companion, William Casey of Henderson; a daughter, Deborah K. Fleming of Madisonville; two sons, James David Fleming of Henderson and Joel Douglas Fleming of Evansville, Ind.; a sister, Florine Chapman of Russellville, Ky. and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at Price Funeral Home. Burial followed in Mt. Moriah Church of Christ Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.
Leslie Calvin Crick
UTICA Leslie Calvin Crick, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at Owensboro Medical Health System.
Born in Greenville, Jan. 17, 1922 to the late John Crick and Mattie Deason Crick, he was retired from Burch Plow Works in Evansville and TVA of Paradise, Ky. He loved NASCAR racing and honorably served his country under the command of General Patton of the 3rd Infantry during World War II, where he was wounded and received his purple heart. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Crick of Salem, Ind. and Robert Crick of Greenville and three sisters, Lorene Crick Johnson, Jimmie Crick Thompson and Nellie Crick, all of Greenville.
Survivors include a son, Johnny (Tracy) Crick of Greenville; four daughters, Leslie Karen (Ricky) Paige and Brenda Jo (Duane) Atherton, all of Utica; Pamela (Bart) Richardson of Vine Grove, Sherry Warren of Henderson a sister, Irene Pate of Greenville; 11 grandchildren, Chad, Seth, Brittany, Autumn, Natalie, Misty, Jarred, Clint, Stephanie, Dawn and Jennifer; six great-grandchildren, Sidney, Caris, Hayden, Katie, Chelsey and Madison.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 18 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Hershel Drake officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.Burial will follow with military honors at Woodland Cemetery in Greenville.
Marian L. Russell
PARSONS, KAN. Marian L. Russell, 90, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at the Labette County Medical Center.
Born in McCune, Kan., March 24, 1914 to the late Harve and Winnie (Casey) Long, she was a former Central City Elementary school teacher and a member of the New Testament Christian Church in Central City. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Russell; a sister, Dorothy Marie Duroni and a niece, Carolyn Sue Duroni.
Survivors include a brother, Richard Long of Denver, Colo.; six nephews, Roger A. Duroni of Parsons, Kan., Charles Duroni of Lancaster, Pa., Rick Long, Marty Long and Barry Long, all of Denver, Colo. and Chris Long of Alameda, Calif.; several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Parsons Education Foundation. The Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, Kan. was in charge of arrangements.
Rosie Crabtree Morehead Kennedy
GREENVILLE - Rosie Crabtree Morehead Kennedy, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Dunmor June 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late James William Crabtree and Annie Brewer Crabtree. She was a housewife, homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.B. Morehead in 1991, a son, Harold Wayne Morehead, three sisters, Litt Crabtree, Goldie Jameson and Pearly Crabtree and a brother, John Crabtree.
Survivors include her husband, Buell Kennedy; six sisters, Martha Vincent of Graham, Alice McGehee of Owensboro, Mary Underwood Jones of Bremen, Annie Henning of Lewisport, Hazel Whitney of Browder and Lou McGhee of Greenville and a brother, Charlie Crabtree of Luzerne.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Kelly officiating. Burial followed in New Cypress Cemetery in Greenville.
David Harold Shaver
GREENVILLE - David Harold Shaver, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005 at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 22, 1921, he was the youngest of eight children born to the late J. Edmund and Alice Humphrey Shaver. He was a veteran of World War II having served as a medic in the Army Air Corps. He was retired from the Kentucky Utilities Power Plant, a member of the V.F.W. Post #5478 and the Greenville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, David Harold (Hal) Shaver Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Goldie Wilson Shaver; a daughter, Lynne (Scott) Hewson of Louisville; two sons, Richard Shaver and Robert Shaver, both of Louisville and two grandchildren, Whitney Hewson and Clay Hewson, both of Louisville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Perdue officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
Dr. Everett S. Coleman
SACRAMENTO - Dr. Everett S. Coleman, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005 at Owensboro Medical Health System.
Born in Williamson, W. Va. Jan. 8, 1929, he grew up in Pike County. He graduated from Berea College and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy on the 1st Nuclear Submarine Forces Atlantic in Groton, Conn. as the fleet’s physician and then opened his practice in Sacramento in 1959 where he continued to treat patients for 42 years. He was a member of the Sacramento Methodist Church, avid bowler, private pilot, musician, enjoyed working outside the home and traveling worldwide. He played the oboe in the first symphony orchestra that was organized in Owensboro. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Christa Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Jennings Coleman; two sons, Jeffrey Owen Coleman of Columbia, Md. and Shannon Coleman of Beulaville, N.C.; three daughers, Susan (Jeff) Vann of Ft. Worth, Texas, Lydia Hobgood of Sebree and Mary Elizabeth Coleman of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Karl (Madeline) Coleman of Charlottesville, Va. and Jean (Edna) Coleman of Grundy, Va.; a sister, Ruth (Ersel) Stanley of Hardy, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Sacramento United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jesse Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Coleman Family Cemetery in Sacramento. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Harlon M. Howe
RICHARD, LA - Harlon M. Howe, 68, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005 at his residence.
Born in Greenville Oct. 20, 1937, he was the son of the late Arley and Bessie Howe. He was a member of the American Legion Post 405, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and he retired from the United States Navy after serving 30 years. He was a member of Pilgram Baptist Church in Church Point, La. He was preceded in death by a son, James Franklin Howe.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce L. Howe; a son, Kenneth Howe of Greenville; a daughter, Tammy Howe of Rayne, La.; four stepsons, Glen Sattler of Pioneer, La., James Sattler of Higginbotham, La. and Marcus Sattler and Bryan Sattler, both of Richard, La.; a stepdaughter, Connie Sattler of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Randall Howe and Jerry Howe, both of Greenville; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at Duhon Funeral Home in Church Point, La. with Pastor Oral Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the St. Edward Church Cemetery in Richard, La.
William Roy Lovell
GREENVILLE William Roy Lovell, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at Maple Manor Healthcare after a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 20, 1915, the son of Casey Frank Lovell and Nannie Wyatt Lovell, he was a retired service station manager and a member of Greenville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Caroline Kennedy Lovell, on April 23, 1998.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby (Wanda) Lovell and Donald (Regenia) Lovell, both of Greenville and Billy (Freda) Lovell of Beechmont; four grandchildren, Kim Lovell, Keith (Sherry) Lovell, Jennifer (John) Finley and Stacy Springer; and two great-grandsons, Isaac and Eli.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Perdue officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
