Larry M. Redfern

SACRAMENTO - Larry M. Redfern, 59, of Sacramento, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born Jan. 24, 1944 in Greenville, the son of the late Edgar and Beulah M. Redfern, he was the owner and operator of Redfern Electric, Plumbing & Heating. He worked at TVA for 10 years where he was president of International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers. He was a member of Calhoun Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Beulah M. Redfern; and two brothers, John Hubert Redfern and Leslie Earl Redfern.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brenda Evans Redfern; one son, David M. Redfern of Sacramento; three daughters, Tracie L. Cissna, Joyce Thomas and Michelle France, all of Sacramento; one brother, Jim Redfern of Louisville; one sister, Marietta Johnston of Evansville, Ind.; six grandsons and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial followed in Sacramento C.P. Cemetery.

Peggy Jane Stanley

GREENVILLE - Peggy Jane Stanley, 46, of Greenville, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 7, 1956 in Muhlenberg County, the daughter of Lawrence Elliott Snyder and Bessie Modell Crick Snyder, she was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Timmy Stanley of Greenville; three sons, Timothy Stanley, Christopher Stanley and Brandon Stanley, all of Greenville; one daughter, Annessa Aldridge of Greenville; two grandchildren; two brothers, Jimmy Snyder of Greenville and Wayne Snyder of Okeechobee, Fla.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, also at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Greenville.

Clifton Earl Holman

GREENVILLE - Clifton Earl Holman, 85, of Greenville, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital Emergency Room.
Born July 10, 1918 in Dunmor, the son of William Ernest Holman and Ella Bell Peay Holman, he retired from General Electric in Louisville in 1976 after 21 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Armour Division in Europe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Holman in 2000.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Anson of Greenville and Donna
Harp of Louisville; one son, Cameron Holman of Greenville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Tootie Bunch and Pal Hammers, both of Provo.
Graveside services and burial were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Doolin Rone Cemetery in Provo with the Rev. Joe Bunch officiating. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Howard Dennis Sr.
Charles Howard Dennis Sr., 87, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Sparks Nursing Center in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 16, 1916, to the late Josephine and Ellis Lucian Dennis, he was a farmer, an army veteran and a member of White Plains Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lurine Dennis; six brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Dennis Jr. of Graham and Joseph Dennis of Central City; a brother, Wesley Dennis of Rosewood; a sister, Dorothy Swain of Drakesboro; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at Bandy Funeral Home in Nortonville with the Rev. Donnie Wilkins officiating. Burial followed in Concord Cemetery in White Plains.

Holly Mendel Hankins

DUNMOR ­ Holly Mendel Hankins, 95, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 at his residence following a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 19, 1908, to the late Robert and Eva Harper Hankins, he was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor. He worked for the Red Cap Sewing Factory in Russellville for 20 years and at Beech Creek Coal Company for 24 years, and carried mail on horseback from Dunmor to Rosewood when he was 16 years old. He played baseball until he was 40 years old, loved University of Kentucky basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and loved to fish and garden. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Drexel, John, R.W. and Sam Hankins.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Sara Elizabeth Baugh Hankins; a son, Paul Dean (Carolyn) Hankins of Rosewood; five grandchildren, Vickie (Keith) Peters of Memphis, Tenn., Mark (Jane) Hankins of Greenville, Tammie (Dan) Lorden of St. Louis, Mo., Phillip (Marlo) Hankins of Rosewood and Susan (Clay) White of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 5 at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor with Mr. Tim Childs and the Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Burial followed in Dunmor Cemetery. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge or arrangements.

Theodore Thirl “Ted” Comer

LEWISBURG ­ Theodore Thirl “Ted” Comer, 59, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004 at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville.
Born in Detroit, Mich., March 15, 1945, he was a staff process engineer at Logan Aluminum in Russellville and a member of the Assembly of God in Greenville.
Survivors include his wife, Renae Comer; a son, Todd Comer of Lexington, S.C.; two daughters, Kelli Aluise of Huntington, W. Va. and Tammi Sommer of Gallipolis, Ohio; a stepson, Craig Bickers of Scottsboro, Ala.; two sisters, Connie Sayers of Glouster, Ohio and Rita Cardwell of Vinton, Ohio; a brother, Mike Comer of Mt. Holm, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Vinton Memorial Park in Vinton, Ohio.

Raymond Edward “Pud” Thomas

HENDERSON - Raymond Edward “Pud” Thomas, 74, formerly of Muhlenberg County, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
Mr. Thomas was a member of Eastview Baptist Church, the American Legion Worsham Post #40 for 45 years and the VFW Post #2953 in Evansville.
Survivors include his caregiver, Tommie Thomas Comer of Henderson; three stepdaughters, Carla Strong and Kathy Doom, both of Evansville and Kim Avery of Robards; a stepson, Tim Huffman of Robards; nine step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 at Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson with military rites by the VFW Post #2953. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association.

Wesley Matthew Franklin

GREENVILLE ­ Wesley Matthew Franklin, 59, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville following a lengthy illness.
Born in Hopkins County, Sept. 12, 1944, to Dorothy Franklin and the late Olif Matthew Franklin, he served in the U.S. Army, was deputy coroner for Muhlenberg County and worked for the Greenville Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his father, Olif Matthew Franklin.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Franklin; his mother, Dorothy Franklin of Central City; four brothers, Charles (Brenda) Franklin of Central City, Anthony (Barbara) Franklin and David (Patty) Franklin, both of Greenville, and Timothy (Claudia) Franklin of Bremen; a sister, Regina (Kenney) Crick of Greenville; six sister-in-laws, Judy (Lannie) Jernigan of Lewisburg, Wanda (Jackie) Lambert, Janie (Raymond) Groves and Jeannie Mitchell, all of Greenville, Betty (Mike) Dukes of Central City and Sue Holderman of Princeton; three brother-in-laws, Wallace (Barbara) Mitchell, Junior Mitchell and Donnie Mitchell, all of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Groves officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Hallie Humphrey

DEPOY ­ Hallie Humphrey, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at her residence in Depoy following a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 22, 1922, to the late Tom and Ranie Groves Majors, she was a member of White Plains Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Humphrey; a son, Claude Humphrey Jr.; and three brothers, Fount, Henry Thomas and Jessie Majors.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann (Glendel) Garrett of Greenville; two sons, Clarence (Ann) Humphrey of Greenville and Charles (Debbie) Humphrey of Paducah; a sister, Flora Vanvactor of White Plains; a brother, Orville Majors of White Plains; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Wallace Carlton officiating. Burial followed in Yeargins Chapel Cemetery in Graham.

Betty Nell Crick
GREENVILLE ­ Betty Nell Crick, 74, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville following a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Oct. 15, 1929, she was a retired employee in housekeeping at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Crick; a son, Bobby Laster of Greenville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 7 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Mr. Tim Childs and Mr. John Kelton officiating. Burial followed in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir.

Alex H. Pete Knight

DRAKESBORO ­ Alex H. Pete Knight, 57, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Nov. 21, 1946, to the late Estil and Lorene Knight, he was a member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church, a custodian employed by the Muhlenberg County School system and formerly employed by SuperValu. He owned and operated Knight’s Garage in Drakesboro from 1969-1981 and was a mechanic at Henry Cisney Chevrolet in Central City.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sharon Leah Knight; a son, Michael Alan (Stacey Lynn) Knight of Drakesboro; a brother, James Henry “Jam Up” Knight of Drakesboro; two sisters, Dorothy Lee Scharf of Millstadt, Ill. and Barbara Jean Arnold of Drakesboro; two grandchildren, Ryan Michael and Colton Layne Knight; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at Union Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Vincent and the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Union Chapel Cemetery in Drakesboro. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Ann Marx

WHITE PLAINS - Patricia Ann Marx, 69, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Evansville, Ind., Jan. 27, 1935, to the late Guy B. and Audrey Ruth Masser Aud., she lived in Muhlenberg County for 28 years and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Aud.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Robert Marx; two daughters, Rose Ann (Tom) Hodges of Maryville, Tenn. and Cinda (Greg) King of Louisville; a son, Bobby Marx of Greenville; three sisters, Ruth Jane Fisher and Dorris Hollis, both of Evansville, and Docia Lee of Fort Myers, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Robin Dale, Glen, Corinna and Casey Hodges, and Abby and Samuel King.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Thurman and the Rev. George Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Greens Chapel Cemetery near Greenville.

William Paul Moore

OWENSBORO ­ William Paul Moore, 71, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at Owensboro Medical Health System.
Born in Muhlenberg County, May 16, 1933, he was a retired coal miner and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Rubbin Gibson.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Gibson Moore; four sons, David Gibson of White Plains, Anthony Moore of Georgia, Ky., Jerry Moore of Greenville and Michael Moore of Owensboro; two daughters, Carrie Moore of Owensboro and Rhonda Gibson of White Plains; three brothers, James Moore of Bremen, Frank Moore of Kuttawa, Ky. and Robert Moore of Chicago, Ill.; five sisters, Lois Morehead of Greenville, Margie Draper of Kirkmansville, Ky., Mildred Crick of Sacramento, Shirley Pendley of Bremen and Mary Day of Utica; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. J.W. Haire officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. on Aug. 10.

Ivy Barbee

Arizona - Ivy Barbee, 91, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Cobre Valley Community Hospital in Arizona.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Feb. 21, 1913, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlis Barbee.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Barbee of Pahrump, Nev., J.P. Barbee of Claypool, Ariz. and Ernie Barbee of Concho, Ariz.; two daughters, Zenith Yandell of Globe, Ariz. and Carolyn Center of Mesa, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. July 31 at Pinal Cemetery, Central Heights. Miles Funeral Services in Arizona was in charge of arrangements.

Hannie Bell Laster

CLIFTY ­ Hannie Bell Laster, 64, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville following a brief illness.
Born in Breathitt County, June 14, 1940, to the late Willie D. and Fannie Turner, she was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Sam, Jessie, Tommy and Hargis Turner.
Survivors include her husband, Emmitte Laster; a brother, Greenberry Turner of Clifty; and two sisters, Mabel Ford and Katherine England, both of Louisville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Neil Immel and the Rev. Eugene Cathy officiating. Burial followed in Slaughters Cemetery in Clifty.

Elaine Stechman

AUBURN, ALA. ­ Elaine Stechman, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at the Bethany House in Auburn, Ala.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 18, 1930, she was one of five children, a life-long bowler and a member of Auburn First Presbyterian. She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Stechman.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Hickok of Auburn, Ala.; a sister, Ruby Anderson of Chicago, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at Auburn First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 10 at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Garden Hills Cemetery.

Phylis Avanell “Kitten” Newman

BEECH CREEK ­ Phylis Avanell “Kitten” Newman, 80, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at her residence in Beech Creek.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 7, 1924, she was a retired restaurant manager and a member of Beech Creek Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Marshell Yost Newman; a daughter, Jimmie (Harold) Bowers of Haubstadt, Ind. and Patricia (Jimmy) Rager of Beechmont; three sisters, Corrine Knight and Wanda Luckett, both of Beechmont, and Pat Kirtley of Belton; five grandchildren, Joseph P., Mickey R. and Benjamin Drew Bowers, and Chad and Chris Rager; and four great-grandchildren, Chase, Justin, Faith and Leighia Bowers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. George Phillips officiating. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. on Aug. 11. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greenville.
