GREENVILLE Jan Murray Camplin, 58, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006.
He was employed by Peabody Coal Company in 1971, and his tenure included administrative positions, Industrial Engineer, Mine Accounting Manager, District Sales Manager and District Vice President - Sales. He retired as Vice President, Peabody COALSALES Company in 1998. His military service with the Kentucky Army National Guard began in 1971. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1973 and graduated from the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Officer Course, Command and General Staff Course and the Army War College. He retired as Colonel (Promotable) Jan M. Camplin in 2003.
He became a trustee with the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels in 1987. He served as Chairman of the Good Works Program, the National Adjutant General and was currently the National Commanding General. He was a Mason, York Rite, Scottish Rite and a Rizpah Shrine member.
He graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Business Administration degree, Emory University with a Masters of Business Administration and Somerset University (Illminster, England) with a Doctor of Business Administration degree. Col. Camplin was also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College serving as a Fellow at the Tuft’s University Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy and Harvard University’s J.F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Divinity.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Ann Buchanan Camplin.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Dempsey Camplin and his father, Paul E. Camplin.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Dr. Tim Davis officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Gary Wayne Evitts
DUNMOR - Gary Wayne Evitts, 48, of Dunmor, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.
Born Jan. 7, 1955 in Chicago, Ill., he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Russellville. He was a machinist and was employed at Betty’s Machines. He enjoyed bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Evitts of Dunmor; one daughter, Samantha Evitts of Dunmor; his parents, Romey Evitts Jr. and Eleanor Evitts of Penrod; two brothers, Joey Evitts of Bloomingdale, Ill., and Mark Evitts of Elgin, Ill.; and three sisters, Vicky Stock of Las Vegas, Nev., Barbara King of Glendale Heights, Ill. and Phyllis Summers of South Elgin, Ill.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with Father Peter Striker officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro.
Jason Eugene Caswell
BREMEN - Jason Eugene Caswell, 18, of Bremen, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Lake Malone.
Born Aug. 10, 1986 in Muhlenberg County, he attended New Harmony Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joshua Caswell; and grandfathers, George Caswell and Larry Vincent.
He is survived by his parents, Eugene and Vickie Caswell of Bremen; one brother, Jamie Caswell of Bremen; grandmothers, Vickie Caswell of Bremen and Ruby Vincent of Central City; and great - grandmother, Velma Roe of Central City.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 1, at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Yeager officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.
Janey Blair Smith
CORDOVA, TENN. - Janey Blair Smith, 98, of Cordova, Tenn., formerly of Allensville, Ky., died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Bellview Woods Retirement Center of natural causes.
Born May 22, 1905 in Earlington, the daughter of the late Polk P. and Alice Donnely Blair, she was a homemaker and a member of the Elkton Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Johnson Smith in 1958; two sons, Frank Smith Jr. in 1986 and Thomas W. Smith in 1997.
She is survived by one son, J. Willard Smith of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31, at Latham Funeral Home with the Rev. John Christian officiating. Burial followed in Belmont Cemetery.
Margaret Lucille Whitehouse
Margaret Lucille Whitehouse, 90, of Central City, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Belle Meade Personal Care in Greenville.
Born Aug. 1, 1912 in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of the Central City First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas “Pete” Whitehouse; two daughters, Mary Jo Burns and Brenda Whitehouse; and one granddaughter.
She is survived by one son, Charles Thomas Whitehouse of Sun Prairie, Wis.; two daughters, Sue Morris of Dover, Del. and Linda Williams of Central City; nine grandchildren; 15 great - grandchildren; and one brother, J. T. Millard of Central City.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 1, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.
Mary Beula Fulkerson
GREENVILLE - Mary Beula Fulkerson, 92, of Greenville, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born Aug. 2, 1910 in Muhlenberg County, the daughter of the late Dicy Ann Redfern Mallory and the late George Thomas Mallory, she had been employed as a cook for Hughes - Kirk High School for 20 years. She was a member of Mud River Union General Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Fulkerson; two sons, Walter N. Fulkerson and William T. Fulkerson; and one grandson.
She is survived by one son, Claude Wayland Fulkerson of Louisville; three daughters, Jo Ann Fulkerson of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; Betty Willis of Nashville, Tenn. and Imogene Wells of Lewisburg, Ky.; eight grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Day officiating. Burial followed in Union Ridge Cemetery in Belton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon International or to the Union Ridge Cemetery fund or to a charity of donor’s choice.
William “Bill” Austin
MADISONVILLE - William “Bill” Austin, 73, of Madisonville, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born June 20, 1930, he was retired from Peabody Coal Company. He attended the Christian Assembly Church in Madisonville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Miladean Austin; and one brother, Bobby Austin.
He is survived by three sons, Van Austin, Bill Austin and Joe Austin, all of Madisonville; two daughters, Candy Phillips and Julia Russell, both of Madisonville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31, at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial followed in the Sacramento Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. Leta Mae Axtell
SACRAMENTO - Leta Mae Axtell, 85, of Sacramento, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Riverside Manor Nursing Center in Calhoun.
Born in Idaho, she was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Clyda Coffman Axtell; two brothers, Sterling Axtell and John Axtell; and one sister, Murrial Wisdom.
She is survived by two brothers, LeRoy Axtell of Sacrmento and Clarence Axtell of Riverton, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial followed in the Sacramento Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Sacramento.
Margie H. Downing
EVANSVILLE - Margie H. Downing, of Evansville, formerly of Belton, died July 29, 2003 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
A nurse for more than 30 years, since 1970, she had worked at Deaconess Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Regina Care Center, Private Duty and Woodlands Convalescent Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Miller and Novella Smith; one brother, James Miller; and one sister, Barbara Richardson.
She is survived by three daughters, Cherree Perigo of Evansville, Kelly Davis of Newburgh, Ind. and Margie Lynne Miller of Crawfordsville, Ind.; one son, Michael J. Downing of Chandler, Ind.; six grandchildren; one great - grandson; three sisters, Wanda Heath of Belton, Jane Ward of Columbus, Ohio and Virginia Smith of Columbus, Ohio.

James Martin Thomas
ELKTON - James Martin Thomas, 72, of Elkton, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at his residence of natural causes.
Born Dec. 5, 1930 in Beulah, Ky., he was the son of the late William Arthur and Mamie Martin Thomas. He was a retired welder for Peabody Coal Company and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Shriners and U.M.W.A. District 23.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Jean Thomas of Elkton; one son, Gary C. Stone of Elkton; one daughter, Marilyn Plunkett of Central City; one brother, Ben Thomas of Beulah, Ky.; one sister, Nancy Ann Mathis of Beulah, Ky.; three grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 4, at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Brian Perry officiating. Burial followed in the Mart Young Cemetery in Dawson Springs, Ky.
Shirley Sue Turley
SACRAMENTO - Shirley Sue Turley, 57, of Sacramento, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born Oct. 15, 1945 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and attended Powers Chapel General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one son, Randy Turley; and father and mother, Owen and Dorothy Strader Whitmer.
She is survived by her husband, Garry Turley; one son, Steven (Amanda) Turley of Sacramento; two grandsons; three brothers, Vernon Whitmer of Sacramento, Roy Allen and Jimmy Whitmer, both of Millport; one sister, Wanda Dossett of Sacramento; and one half - sister, Louise Dossett.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. J. W. Haire officiating. Burial followed in Poplar Grove Cemetery in McLean County.
Glenn Croft
GRAHAM - Glenn Croft, 29, of Graham, died Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born May 22, 1974 in Muhlenberg County, he was a construction worker and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Croft.
He is survived by one daughter, Haley Croft of Greenville; mother, Freda Fowler of Graham; stepfather, Wayne Fowler of Graham; one brother, Eddie Croft of Graham; one sister, Teresa Bethel of Greenville; one stepbrother, Steve Fowler; one stepsister, Darla Curtis of Madisonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Barry Noe officiating. Burial will follow in New Cypress Cemetery.
Paul Dean Cobb
MADISONVILLE - Paul Dean Cobb, 33, of Madisonville, died Saturday, Aug. 2, in Louisville.
Born Sept. 15, 1969 in Chicago, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Douglas Cobb in February of 2000, his father, Paul Ray Cobb in April of 2002; and his mother, Mildred Jean Cobb in October of 2002.
He is survived by his sister - in - law, Tina P. Cobb of Madisonville; half sister, Lisa Dotty of Henderson; two half brothers, Allan Brown of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kenny Brown of Niagra, Ky.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 5, after 9 a.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., also on Tuesday, at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Drury officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Depoy.
Sebree N. Crumbie
Sebree N. Crumbie, 73, of Central City, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
A native of Bourbon County, he was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Central City. He was a graduate of Western High School in Paris, Ky. and also of Tennessee State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and industry in 1957. He was a veteran, having enlisted in the armed forces Oct. 30, 1951; he was honorably discharged on Oct. 13, 1953.
He is survived by his wife, Juarnell O. Crumbie of Central City; one son, Jon Eric Crumbie of Louisville; one daughter, Connie Talbott of Central City; one brother, Samuel Crumbie of Paris, Ky.; one brother - in - law, Manes Hazzard of Paris; and one sister - in - law, Willa Crumbie of Paris.
Visitation is from 6 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Central City and from noon until the time of the funeral at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, also at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
