Charles E. Smith, 63, Russell Springs, Ky passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at his residence. He was retired from the Transportation Department and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou Ragle Smith, Russell Springs; three sons, Greg (Robin) Smith, Russell Springs, KY, Trent (Mitza) Smith, Jamestown, KY, and Mark Smith, Russell Springs, KY; one brother, James C. (Jane) Smith, Russell Springs, KY; one step-sister, Barbara Fruechtaicht, AL; two grandchildren, Travis and Skyler Smith, both of Jamestown, KY. He was preceded in death by one step-sister, Linda Rae Coe. Funeral services were Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at the Friendship Baptist Church in Russell Springs, KY with Bro. Jeff Kerr officiating. Interment was in the Smith Memorial Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Alan Voils, Gary Robertson, Jerry Loy, Keith Gilpin, Jeff Womack, Rodney Little, Jim Coffey, and Charles D. Hale. Active pallbearers were Art Ragle, Bascum Smith, Charles B. Smith, Mike Popplewell, and John Smith. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 164, Russell Springs, KY 42642 or Hospice of Lake Cumberland. H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Roy Cook, 67, Columbia, KY passed away suddenly on Monday, September 15, 2003 at the Westlake Regional Hospital Emergency Room in Columbia, KY. He was the son of the late George and Flora Harmon Cook of Adair County, KY He was survived by his wife, Doris Kerr Cook, Columbia, KY; two sons, Garry and his wife Sherry Cook, Columbia, KY and Ronald and his wife Londa Cook, Russell Springs, KY; two daughters, Adalene Cook, and Faye Cook, both of Columbia, KY; three sisters, Ruby Burton, Columbia, KY, Shirley Parson, Campbellsville, KY and Rosie McGaha, Columbus, IN; six grandsons and one step-grandson, David Cook, Chris Cundiff, Kevin Cundiff, Marty Cundiff, Terry Harmon, Ben Harmon, and Jeremy Cape; two great grandsons and one step great granddaughter, Aiden Cook, Michael Harmon and Tyra Cape. Mr. Cook was retired from Gaddie Shamrock Quarry in Columbia, KY. Funeral services were Thursday, September 18, 2003 in the chapel of Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with Bro. Richie Curtis officiating. Interment was in the Freedom Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were, Jeremy Cape, Kenneth Cook, Larry Cundiff, Ricky Cook, Rodney Blankenship and Junior Irvin. Active pallbearers were Chris Cundiff, David Cook, Kevin Cundiff, Marty Cundiff, Ben Harmon, and Terry Harmon. Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Seth Wade Jr., 74, Edinburg, TX, passed away Friday, September 5, 2003 in Edinburg, TX. He was a retired educator of Pan American University in Edinburg, TX after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Seth I. Wade and Ella Jasper Wade of the Windsor Community of Russell County. Survivors include one son, Jon Wade, Houston, TX; one daughter, Karen Wade, Dallas, TX, one step-son, Jeff of Tennessee; one brother, Frank Wade, Russell Springs, KY; and one sister, Mildred Wade Humble, Science Hill, KY. Seth Jr. graduated from the old Russell Springs High School in 1948 and from University of Kentucky in 1952. He also attended Ohio State University and the University of Florida. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. He settled in Edinburg some 40 years ago and remained there until his death and wished to remain there after his death.

Ray Harrison Carter, 53, Russell Springs, KY passed away Friday, October 31, 2003 at his residence. He was an heavy equipment operator by trade. Survivors include four sons, Johnny Carter, Scotty Carter and Wayne Carter, all of Columbia, KY and Dakota Carter, Russell Springs, KY; three daughters, Sandra McCloud and Latasha Carter, both of Columbia, KY and Whitney Carter, Russell Springs, KY; his mother, Sarah Evelyn Carter, Russell Springs, KY; two brothers, Bo Carter, Cambridge, OH and Ronnie Carter, Columbia, KY; four sisters, Jackie Adamson, Russell Springs, KY, Jo Carter, Greensburg, KY, Jerrie Holland, Summershade, KY and Judy Hammond, Mt. Vernon, KY; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rhuie Carter. Funeral services were Monday, November 3, 2003 in the chapel of Bernard Funeral Home with Bro. Elbert Hadley and Bro. J.D. Melson. Interment was in the Conover Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Colin Arthur and Mickey Carter. Active pallbearers were Billy Rice, Randall Grant, Gerald Carter, Kevin Bray, Glen Hammond, and Jerry Kerr. Bernard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bessie Susan Hoskins Richards, 90, Jamestown, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at the Russell County Hospital. She was the widow of Orvis Richards. She was preceded in death by her husband Orvis and brothers Chester, Estil, and Elmer Hoskins and a sister, Pauline Roy. Survivors include two sons, Kent and Judy Richards, Frankfort, KY and Dwight and Carol Richards, Jamestown, KY; one brother, J.L. Hoskins, Hustonville, KY; two sisters, Eula Hankla, Jamestown, KY and Elizabeth Land Turpin, Liberty, KY; and four grandsons, one granddaughter, four great grandsons and several nieces and nephews. She was a longtime member of the Jamestown First Baptist Church. Funeral services were Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Jamestown First Baptist Church with Bro. Dan Flanagan and Bro. Monty Moore officiating. Special music was provided by the church choir. Interment was in the Ridgecrest Cemetery. Rippetoe Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Roxie Eastham, 85, Fair Oaks Nursing Home, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Fair Oaks Nursing Home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Square Oak Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Kenstill (Jackie) Eastham of Russell Springs, two grandchildren, Kenny (Becky) Eastham, Seymour, IN, Rodney Eastham of Russell Springs and four great grandchildren, Zachory, Cody, Jalyn and Nicholas, one brother, Wilbur Wisdom of Jamestown, KY. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Bernard Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Donnie Coffey officiating. Interment was in the Square Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Rodney Eastham; Kenny Eastham; Jerry Polston; Gary Wisdom; Rex Eastham and Milze McGowan. Special music was by Janice Popplewell, Wilma Eller and Osburn Roy.

Pearl M. Emerson, 86, Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at the Russell County Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Eden United Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Roe Emerson and two sons, Roy (Carol) Emerson, Anchorage, Alaska and James (Dorothy) Emerson, Mt. Juliet, TN; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dewey Emerson and a daughter, Louise Bradshaw. Funeral services were Friday, May 9, 2003 in the chapel of Bernard Funeral Home with Bro. Herald Wright officiating. Special music was provided by Glen and Willodean Richardson. Interment was in the Wilkerson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Blakey, Ronald Robertson, Darry Flatt, Zenba Harris, Jimmy Dick, and Royce Dick. The Bernard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
