Dezel Woods, Jr.

Dezel Woods, Jr., 79, of DeRidder, Louisiana, passed from this life on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 3:28 PM. Visitation will be held at New Hope Christian Methodist Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 4, 2009 from 8 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at New Hope Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at 11 O’clock AM with Elder Louis F. Guy officiating. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana.
Mr. Woods retired from KCS Railroad after 25 years of service. He was a God-fearing man that was always willing to help others. Survivors include the following; Wife: Edna Woods of DeRidder, LA; Sons: Alfred E. and Philisa Woods of Warner Robins, GA and Webster and Phyllis Woods of Simpsonville, SC; Daughters: Barbara Lynn and Justienne Etienne of Lake Charles, LA, Kayla Woods of DeRidder, LA, and Della R. and Steven Earl Brand of DeRidder, LA; Brothers: Miller Woods of Shreveport, LA and Milton Woods of DeRidder, LA; Sisters: Hazel Flowers of Shreveport, LA, Ora Woods of Shreveport, LA, Nora Ware of Shreveport, LA, and Eugenia Weaver of Shreveport, LA, as well as fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Claudia Jackson

Claudia Jackson was born April 15, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, (parental mother, the late Delores Bean, parental father, George Cook). Her childhood education was in the public schools of Detroit. She moved to Louisiana at an early age where she met and married Leroy Jackson “Little Buddy “(deceased) they remained married for 53 years; to this union, 16 children were born. Claudia was loved by many and affectionately wore the name of “Madear”.
She was baptized and attended the Baptist church (Mount Zion and Star Light). She later joined the Grand Ole Church of God In Christ, moving back to Michigan and faithfully serving at the Woods Cathedral COGIC (Dr. Amos Woods, Sr.). She loved the church, her God, her children and her poetry. She was a cheerful giver to all she met.She worked many years in DeRidder for Hixson Funeral home. She worked over 20 years for Unibar and the 36th district courts in Detroit. Her dedication to work kept her occupied until she retired to a brief stay in Los Angeles, CA. Upon suffering a stroke, she moved back to Detroit, were she spent the remainder of her days. Claudia Jackson departed this life on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.Claudia was preceded in death by two children, Cicero Jackson and Maggie Mayes.She leaves to cherish her memories; Father, George Cook of Detroit; MI., Eight sons Leroy Jackson, Jr., Prentiss Jackson, Monroe Jackson all of DeRidder, LA., Claude Edward Jackson of North Hollywood, CA, Darrell Jackson of Lafayette, LA, Paul (Vicki) Jackson of Dallas, TX, Eddie Jackson of Detroit, MI, Curtis Jackson of Detroit, MI; Six Daughters: Evelyn Jackson McCarty and Aretha (Ernie) Cortez of Los Angeles, CA, Delona Hunts Berry of Oklahoma City, OK., Flocecelia Jackson, Yulanda Jackson, Chiquitta Jackson of Detroit, MI. Forty-four (44) grandchildren, eleven (11) great-grandchildren, three sisters: Addie Morgan, Joanne Clark, Charlotte (Charles) Jackson, one brother: Johnnie Cook all of Detroit, and favorite Aunt Tessie Doggett and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Community Cemetery in Merryville, Louisiana at 12 PM.

John Thomas Anthony Brewer

John Thomas Anthony Brewer, 18 Months of age, passed from this life on Monday, June 22, 2009 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 10 o'clock AM at Grace Church in DeRidder, Louisiana with Rev. James Glass officiating. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana. To my beautiful son, you will be missed dearly. Mommy, Daddy, Pawpaw and Nana miss you. May God watch over you. We'll see you soon. Love Nana. Survivors include the following: Mother: Holly Brewer of DeRidder, Louisiana; Father: Brandon Portman of Louisville, Kentucky; Maternal Grandparents: Scott A. and Gwendolyn N. Brewer of Merryville, Louisiana; Paternal Grandparents: Randy and Candy Smith of Louisville, Kentucky; Sister: Allison Brewer of DeRidder, Louisiana; Aunt: Cassie Portman of Louisville, Kentucky; and Great Grandfather: Bill E. Brewer of Westlake, Louisiana.

Steven F. Tilley

Steven F. Tilley, 47, of Rosepine, Louisiana, passed from this life on Friday, June 19, 2009. A memorial service will be held for him on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2 o'clock PM at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana, with Brother Jeremy Griffin officiating. Survivors include the following: Daughters: Katie & husband Brandon Chisholm of DeRidder, LA and Kim Tilley of Rosepine, LA; Sisters: Janie Sue & husband Richard Harris of Rosepine, LA, and Jenny Kay & husband Bert Hopkins of Rosepine, LA; and Grandchildren: Hannah Chisholm, Bailee Chisholm & Matthew Chisholm all of DeRidder, LA.

Lonnie Craig

Lonnie Craig, 52, of DeRidder, Louisiana, passed from this life on Monday, June 15, 2009 in DeRidder, Louisiana. Visitation will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana, on Friday, June 19, 2009 from 5 PM until 9 PM and again on Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 10 AM until the Time of Service. Funeral services will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana, on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 3 O'clock PM with Rev. James Piper officiating. Burial will follow at Almadane Cemetery in Knight Community. Survivors include the following: Mother: Naomi Craig of Knight, Louisiana; Best Friend: Deborah Allen of DeRidder, Louisiana; Daughter: Toni Washington of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Son: Jermaine Washington of DeRidder, Louisiana; Brothers: Jimmy Lee Craig of DeRidder, Louisiana, Darrel Wayne Craig of Shreveport, Louisiana, Norman Ross Craig of DeRidder, Louisiana; Sisters: Patricia Ann Craig of Killeen, Texas and LaCrisha Chanty Jeff of DeRidder, Louisiana. He also leaves behind a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will also miss him. He was preceded in death by: Father: Earl James Craig, Sr. and Brother: Earl James Craig, Jr.

Alice Mae Haynes Crawford

Funeral Services will be held at New Hope Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in DeRidder, Louisiana, on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 11 O'clock AM with Elder Louis F. Guy officiating. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana. Survivors include the following: Son: Elbert M. Crawford of Houston, Texas; Daughters: Aleta Lenyard of Harrison, Tennessee, and Evelyn Crawford of Long Beach, California; Step-Daughter: Theresa Crawford Brush of Carson, California; grandchildren: Erin Lenyard Tillery of New Orleans, Louisiana; Lacey Devonne Crawford of Dallas, Texas; and Lavelle Rhodes of Leesville, Louisiana; great-grandchildren: Xavier D. Birmingham and Brooklyn Birmingham. She was preceded in death by: Husband: Detroit Crawford; Father: Matthew Haynes, Sr.; Mother: Evelyn Banks Haynes; Son: Vernon Wayne Crawford; Brother: Matthew Haynes, Jr.; Brother: George Haynes; and Brother: James Haynes.

Madge Louise Fisk

Madge Louise Fisk, 92, of DeRidder, Louisiana, passed from this life on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at her residence. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana, beginning at 5:00 until 9:00 PM. visitation will continue on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, Texas (13401 Eastex Fwy at Lauder Road), beginning at 5:00 until 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Rev. Hurshel Davis will officiate.
Louise was preceded in death by her spouse: Glen Fisk, Sr. and her parents, Jasper N. and Amanda L. Williams.
She is survived by Four nieces and one Nephew: Vicki Wilcox Troutman (Donald) of Knight Community; Sandra Bohanon (Rodney); Glenda Brigance (David); Debra Saye (Homer) and Ross E. McGregor. She is also survived by numerous great-nieces and nephews as well as great-great-nieces and nephews.

Lawrence (Larry) Armstrong Barnhill

Lawrence (Larry) Armstrong Barnhill, born on March 4, 1925, to Lawrence Armstrong Barnhill, Sr. and Lola Lambert Barnhill in DeRidder, Louisiana, departed this life on June 9, 2009, surrounded by his family and friends at the age of 84.
Larry married Lucille (Lou) Elizabeth Glass on March 17, 1946. Larry and Lou were married for 62 years before Lou’s passing on June 5, 2008. Larry and Lou attended First United Pentecostal Church in DeRidder, where Larry served on the board as the oldest living board member for the past 35 years. Larry and Lou owned Thompson’s Gift Shop in DeRidder for twenty-five years.
Larry graduated from DeRidder High School in 1943 and attended every 5th year reunion; each was headed by Joy Hudson for the past 65 years. Larry was an active member of the DeRidder school board from January 1st, 1973 until December 31st1986. He served as a Parish Fair Judge for 35 years and co-founded the Council On Aging. Larry was also an original Saints Alive Committee member.
Larry was inducted into the army on July 29, 1943 and was honorably discharged on February 17, 1946 holding the rank of Army Staff Sergeant. He served actively in World War II in Hawaii and Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped. Larry’s military service included being awarded the following declarations and citations: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, and the Meritorious Unit Award.
Services for Larry Barnhill include Family Visitation at the First United Pentecostal Church on Saturday, June 13th from Noon until 2:00pm followed by Funeral Services at 2:00pm also at the First United Pentecostal Church. Reverend Zale Lewis, Pastor of the Church, Rev. Tommy Magee of DeRidder, Reverend Arless Glass of Pasadena, Texas and Reverend Charles Glass of Sherman, Texas will be officiating. Larry’s grandsons, Aaron Lawrence Cernero and Joseph Ryan Cernero, both of Sherman, will be speaking. Mrs. Zale Lewis and Reverend Rich Glass will be singing. Pallbearers will be Willie Austin, Rufus Piper, Barney Bailey, Gerald Johnson, Charles Lewis, George Jouban, Clarence McKnight, Jim Cheever, Rev. Kevin Reeves, Robert Nunn and John Cernero. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rayvon Hester, Nathan Lewis, Arless Lewis, Adam Cernero, Brandon Kumler, Mark Brown, Caleb Dupuis and Robert Bond. Mrs. Caleb Dupuis will be playing classical music from the 40’s during visitation.
Larry is survived by daughter Beth and son-in-law Joe Cernero of Sherman, Texas. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joseph Ryan Cernero, J.D. and wife Carrie, and Dr. Aaron Lawrence Cernero and wife Ailee; and great-grandchildren Joseph Blume Cernero, Oliver Armstrong Cernero, Josephine Elizabeth Cernero, Sophia Marie Cernero and Allie Jane Cernero, all of Sherman. He was preceded in death by mother, Lola Lambert Barnhill and father, Lawrence Armstrong Barnhill, Sr., sister, Lola Barnhill Thorn, brothers, Barney Barnhill and A.L. Barnhill.
The family would like to recognize and give special thanks to Pam Austin and Willie Austin for their extraordinary love and care provided to Larry and Lou for many years. Special thanks to Dr. Gremmel and Dr. Yue for the excellent medical care they gave Larry.

Anna Gohegan Cooksey

Sister Anna G. Cooksey was born to the late George and Mary Gohegan, Sr. on June 9, 1926 in DeRidder, Louisiana. She peacefully departed this life on June 4, 2009 at 6:15 PM at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be held at the Sweet Home Baptist Church in DeRidder, Louisiana on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 8 AM until 11 AM. Funeral Services will be held at the Sweet Home Baptist Church on June 13, 2009 at 11 AM with Rev. Robert D. Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery.
Sis. Anna Cooksey accepted God at an early age and united with Sweet Home Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor D. J. Jones. In her years at Sweet Home, she served in many capacities including being a deaconess, choir member, and a member of Circle Mission 3.
On October 7, 1950, she was married to the late Rev. Elbert Cooksey. To this union, eight children were born. Sis. Anna Cooksey was a devoted mother; meek, humble, and mild who always greeted you with a smile. She leaves to mourn; seven children: Elbert Nash (Lena) Cooksey of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Margaret (Tony) Omagbemi of Lagos, Nigeria; Catherine Cooksey of DeRidder, Louisiana; Albert Roland Cooksey of DeRidder, Louisiana; Douglas (Kathalee) Cooksey of Lafayette, Louisiana; Linda (Rev. Robert) Walker of Beaumont, Texas; and Sharon (James) Henton of Lake Charles, Louisiana; one sister: Lucy Coleman of Richmond, California; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by; her parents: George and Mary Gohegan, Sr.; daughter: Rosemary Childs; husband: Rev. Elbert Cooksey; three sisters and four brothers.

Lee Noah Bettis, Sr.

Lee Noah Bettis, Sr., 87, of DeRidder, Louisiana, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder, Louisiana. Visitation will be held at the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church in DeRidder, Louisiana on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 from 6 PM until 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 11 AM with Rev. Keith Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Spikes Cemetery in Bancroft, Louisiana. Survivors include the following: Sons: Lee Noah Bettis, Jr. and Bernice Bettis of Bremerton, Washington, Willard and Robin Bettis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Paul and Patricia Bettis of Lake Charles, Louisiana; Sister: Leona Williams of Bancroft, Louisiana and Four Grandchildren and Three Great Grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
