Mildred K. Bartley
Mildred (Millie) Kelly Bartley died on December 27, 2003 after a long, valiant struggle with breast cancer with her husband and children by her side. Millie was born and grew up in Philadelphia, PA. She is the daughter of George Joseph (deceased) and Helen Mayer Kelly. She went to school at St. Basil's Academy, Chestnut Hill College, and later received a Masters Degree from George Mason University. She spent most of her life in Northern Virginia, where she was a manager in the development of large scale databases and automated systems before her retirement. In addition, she was active spiritually and in social works. She enjoyed travel and tennis. Most of all, she loved being with family and friends, especially her seven grandchildren. After coming to Crozet, VA in 2001, she became active in the Charlottesville Newcomers Club and the Nitty Gritty Cancer Group. In addition to her seven grandchildren, Millie is survived by her husband John (Jack) Paul Bartley, her daughters Elizabeth Ann Bartley and Mary Bartley Sherman of Crozet, VA and her son John Paul Bartley of Cary, NC. She is also survived by her mother Helen Mayer Kelly of Ruston, LA; sisters Helen Joerger and Kathleen Quinn of Churchville, PA and Mary Pschenica of Omaha, NE; her brothers George of Suffern, NY, Henry (Hank) of Monroe, LA, and John of Ruston, LA. The family wishes to thank all of our family and friends for their love and support. The Memorial Service will be held at Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church (717 Rugby Road in Charlottesville VA 22903) on Saturday January 3, 2004 at 10:30 am EST. Services for Opal Lewis Hearne, 85, of Ruston, LA will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2003 in the Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Dale Oden. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Hearne died Sunday, December 28, 2003 in Ruston, LA following a lengthy illness. She was an active member of Temple Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Hearne. Survivors include one son, Robert Hearne of Ruston, LA; one daughter, Bette Hearne Vos of Birmingham, AL; two grandchildren, Jennifer Vos Smith of Dallas, TX and Amy Vos McLeod of Birmingham, AL; and two great grandchildren. Michael and Jeanne Duddy of Roanoke, VA sadly announce the death of their beloved son, Kevin Michael Duddy, 23, of Atlanta, GA, on December 23, 2003. Maggie Brooks Green
Services for Mrs. Maggie Brooks Green will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 30th at her home church, Fellowship Baptist, near Dubach with interment to follow there. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Officiating will be Rev. Wayne Reeves and Rev. John Flanagan. A native of Bernice, LA, Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Edwin A. Green, and her parents, William Claude Brooks and Katie Weldon Brooks. Left to cherish her memory are her four daughters and their husbands: Mary Alice and W. O. Bagwell of Dubach, Vivian and Gill Colvin of El Dorado, AR, Martha Ellen and Larry Deason of Baton Rouge, and Maggie and John Brown of Ruston. Funeral services for Charlotte Houck Delony, 57, of Ruston, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2003 at Harmony Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Dies officiating. Interment will be in Harmony Chapel Methodist Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Delony died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 in Ruston following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Delony was a lifelong resident of Lincoln Parish and a longtime member of Harmony Chapel Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her father O. A. Houck, brothers Jimmy Houck and Johnny Houck, and sister Christine Houck. Services for Mr. Jack C. Clark, 83, of Ruston, LA will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2003 at Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Reverend Dale Odom officiating. Mr. Clark passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Lincoln General Hospital. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII & Korea. Interment will follow in Pines Memorial Gardens in Ruston. He is survived by his wife, Heidi E. Clark; daughter, Christie Reeves; and son, Michael Clark, all of Ruston, LA; and two grandsons, Christopher and Mitchell Clark of Monroe, LA. Mr. Brady died Saturday, December 20, 2003 in West Monroe, LA following a brief illness. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. Jerry L. Miller
Services for Jerry L. Miller, 68, of Ruston, LA were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Cook Baptist Church in Ruston. Officiating was Dr. David Newberry, assisted by Rev. Jerry Whitman. Interment was in Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Miller died Friday, December 19, 2003 in Ruston, LA following a brief illness. Dr. Miller was a member and Sunday School teacher at Cook Baptist Church. He was a retired Professor of Education at Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Miller was a Deputy with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office as the grant writer for the department. Beginning his career in law enforcement as a reserve, he was one of the original key reserve deputies in 1980. Deputy Miller was a big asset in getting the reserves formed and stayed with them until he went full-time in 1992. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Elayne Miller of Ruston; one son, Stephen Miller and wife Nanette of Ruston; one daughter, Stacee Priddy and husband Dr. John Priddy of Tyler, TX; mother, Minnie Miller of Winnfield, LA; mother-in-law, Loyce McCartney of Olla, LA; grandchildren, Jessica Miller, Daniel Priddy and Megan Priddy; one brother, Dr. J. Michael Miller and wife Ginger of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Wayne Houck, Donnie Womack, Dr. J. V. Frances I. Roach
Services for Mrs. Frances I. Roach, 76, of Ruston, LA will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2003 at Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Michael Hawley officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ruston. Mrs. Roach passed away Saturday, December 20, 2003 at Lincoln General Hospital. She is survived by her husband, R. D. Roach, Jr. of Ruston; her son, Robert M. Roach and wife Robbie of Ruston, LA; her daughter, Sarah and husband Jim Burdine of Keithville, LA; brother, John M. Colvin; and sister, Joy Faulkner, both of Ruston, LA. Pallbearers will be Jay Plaisance, Cody, David and James Roach, Joe Burdine and Todd Faulkner. Frank William "Bill" Shipley
Frank William "Bill" Shipley, retired Mobile Oil Corporation electrical engineer, died on Thursday, December 18, 2003. He was 77 years old. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Monday, at First Presbyterian Church, Yazoo City. Memorial service is 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Mr. Shipley was born March 25, 1926, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, to Miriam Beal and Jack Batchelder Shipley. The family later moved to Canton, Mississippi, where he lived for 15 years. He served in WWII, then graduated from Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA, where he met and married Ann Grambling. Bill and Ann had recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Bill was employed in Yazoo City for many years with Mississippi Chemical Company. He later accepted a position with Mobil Oil Corporation in their research and development division. During his years with Mobil Oil, he was stationed at numerous international locations. During this time overseas, he involved himself in local Christian outreach. He was diligent in his efforts to share his beliefs and lead others to Christ, wherever he was stationed. Upon his retirement at age 60, and return to Yazoo City, he continued his hobbies of duck hunting, fishing, antique cars, tennis, and building projects. Mr. Shipley was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, Yazoo City, where he taught adult Sunday School and catechism, and served many years as deacon, then elder. Mr. Shipley is survived by his wife, Ann Grambling Shipley; and three daughters and their families, Kathryn Barrows of Roanoke, VA, Queen and Philip Swayze of Yazoo City, MS, and Amy and Mike Ward of Madison, MS. He had six grandchildren: Ann Winifred Barrows and William Barrows, Roanoke, VA, Annie Swayze and Mary B. Swayze, Yazoo City, MS, Virginia Ward and Brennan Ward, Madison, MS. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Heberer, Greensboro, NC; and nine nieces and nephews. His brothers, Jack Shipley and Lee Shipley, Sr., preceded him in death. Sam Richard Squyres, Jr.
Services for Sam Richard Squyres, Jr., 22, of Simsboro, LA will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2003 at Simsboro First Baptist Church with Dr. Wilton Wall officiating, assisted by Rev. Ron Cathey. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Simsboro, LA, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Squyres died Saturday at Shreveport following a brief illness. Mr. Squyres was a member of Simsboro First Baptist Church. He was a senior at Louisiana Tech University. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Earl and Irene Squyres and Henry Null. Survivors include his parents, Sam Squyres, Sr. and Patricia Null Squyres of Simsboro, LA; sister, Anne Marie Squyres Jones and husband James of Gibsland, LA; niece, Madison Anne Jones; grandmother, Lola Jean Crawley Null of Ruston, LA; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. James Randall, Sister Billie Bostic, Sister Deborah Randall, Sister I. L. Bailey and Rev. Rodney Lee Warren officiating. Mrs. Warren passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at her residence. Interment followed in Corinth Cemetery in Hico. She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Warren of Linden, Texas; two sons, Rodney Lee Warren of Linden and Randy Warren of Paris, Texas; one daughter, Kathy Pickron of Quitman, LA; two sisters, Judy Jeselink of Silsbee, Texas and Sandra Mashaw of Farmerville; one aunt, Leona Brown of Santa Maria, CA; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Hunter died December 13, 2003 in the Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, MS. Lavon Burgess
Services for Lavon Burgess, 76, of Ruston, LA, former resident of Vidalia, LA, were held Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church in Vidalia, LA. Officiating was Rev. Ron Ledford. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home of Natchez, MS. Mr. Burgess died December 14, 2003 in Ruston, LA. Mr. Burgess was born August 5, 1927 in New London Township, AR to James Linton Burgess and Eula Ethridge Burgess. He married Gilda Tugwell on February 6, 1950. They lived in Vidalia, LA for 45 years, until moving to Ruston, LA in August 2001 for health reasons. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Vidalia, LA. He was known for his white perch fishing and for being a helpful handyman to anyone in need. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Gilda Burgess. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Hendricks and husband David of Vidalia, LA, Debbie Strickland and husband Derrick of Grand Prairie, TX and Sandy Hastings and husband David of Ruston, LA; one son, Vernon Burgess and wife Dee of Greenwood, LA; two sisters, Laverne Little of Marion, LA and Laura Pagan of Huttig, AR; one brother, Loyd Burgess of El Dorado, AR; and grandchildren, Holly, Nicole, Luke, Nathan, Seth, Andrew and Sarah. Pallbearers were Hank Howington, Lawrence Cockerham, Donnie Boles, Louis Crooks, Cornie Hudson and R. V. Mize. Mary Lee Chandler
Services for Mary Lee Chandler, 93, of Ruston, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 14, 2003 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Michael Hawley officiating. Interment will be in Longstraw Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Chandler died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Christus Highland Hospital in Shreveport. Mrs. Chandler was an active member of her community. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, a 50 year member of Home Makers Council of La. Extension Service, and a member of Magi Chapter of Eastern Star. Mrs. Chandler retired from Lincoln General Hospital after 31 years of service. She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Lloyd Fallin and Ollie Jane Smith Fallin; a sister, Erline Fallin Webster; a brother, Ford Fallin; and a grandson, Danny Chandler. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Olive and Jack Gary of Shreveport; a son, Chester H. Chandler, Jr., of Shreveport; a sister, Alice Fallin Garner of Ruston; brother, Daniel Fallin of Ruston; four grandsons, Bill Gary, Gerry Gary and wife Mary, Mike Gary and wife Joyce, Chester H. Chandler III and wife Beth; seven great grandchildren she loved dearly; Kristen, Brandon, Douglas, Calvin, Jack, McKinnon, and Jan. Services of Emma Jo Colvin Pilgreen, 89, of Shreveport, formerly of Dubach, will be at 2 :30 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach with the Revs. John Flanagan and Ben Pilgreen officiating. Interment will be in Fellowship Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Pilgreen died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in Shreveport. Mrs. Pilgreen was preceded in death by three sons, Perry Pilgreen, Richard Pilgreen, and Ronald Pilgreen; and by one daughter, Gwen Driggers. She is survived by daughters, Patricia Pendergraft and husband Louie of Angleton, Texas, Sonja Ferguson and husband Curtis of Houston, Texas, Rita Powell and husband John B. of Buda, Texas, Vern Pilgreen and husband Doug Brook-Webb of Shreveport, Sue Bailey of Shreveport, and Debra Panico and husband Bob of Galveston, Texas; sons, Joe Max Pilgreen of Monroe, and Jimmy Pilgreen and wife Rita of Slidell; 26 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Cemetery Association, PO Box 104, Dubach, LA, 71235. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 12, 2003 fron 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Adrion "Red" Woods
Services for James Adrion "Red" Woods, 83, of Simsboro, formerly of Ansley, Louisiana, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2003 in the chapel of Owens Funeral Home in Ruston with Rev. Jimmie D. Pyles and Rev. Ross Genger officiating. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 on Friday, December 12 at Owens Funeral Home. Mr. Woods was born on January 31, 1920 and died on December 11, 2003 in Ruston. Mr. Woods was retired from Highline Construction Company and Claiborne Parish Police Jury. He was an avid sports enthusiast having played baseball locally as well as semi-professionally and also in Europe while serving with the Air Force during World War II. He was an active member and leader of the Over 50's Group, a longtime member of the Simsboro Lion's Club, and active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Simsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Vera Woods; wives, Charline Young Woods, Mildred Peterson and Thera Rasbury Woods; brothers, Travis H. Woods and Joe F. Woods; sisters, Helen Parkman and Willow Dean Logan; grandson, Chad Woods; and infant son, Gary Lynn Woods. Survivors include two daughters, Pam Womack and husband Don of Ruston and Leigh Willis and husband Edward of Baton Rouge; two sons, James Martin Woods and wife Bonita of Ansley and Travis Wayne Woods and wife Lois of Buna, Texas; grandchildren, Greg Womack, Lori Faile, Donna Sherman, Daniel Womack, Mark Woods, Jay Woods, Amy Woods and Bridget Willis; great grandchildren, Vincent Womack, Adreona Womack, Ansleigh Faile, Carley Faile and Katelynn "Butch" Sherman; brother, T. R. Woods of Bridge City, TX; sister, Boyce Weeks of Quitman, LA; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Greg Womack, Mark Woods, Jay Woods, Daniel Womack, Edward Faile and Deron Sherman. Honorary pallbearers are sons-in-law, Don Womack and Edward Willis; men of Memorial United Methodist Church and Antioch Methodist Church of Simsboro; and the Over 50's organization. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Memorial United Methodist Church, Ansley Union Church, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

John S. Hewitt
John S. Hewitt, 89, passed away Friday, December 5, 2003 in Tulsa, OK. Born in Waco, TX on September 7, 1914, he was a graduate of Louisiana Tech in 1939 where he was a three-year football letterman. He married Doris K. Terrill of Ruston on February 22, 1941. John retired from Cities Service Oil/Ark Fuel as Accounting Supervisor after 38 years. He served as CPO for the U. S. Navy from 1942-45. He is survived by his wife, Doris T. Hewitt; and a son, John A. Hewitt. Services were held Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Moore's Southlawn Chapel in Tulsa, OK.

Rebecca Marie Thompson
Private graveside services were held for Rebecca Marie Thompson, infant daughter of Brandon and Heather Thompson on December 10, 2003 at 2:00 at Greenwood Cemetery. Becca was buried beside her Papaw Carroll. "Becca" entered the arms of Jesus on December 7, 2003. Even though Becca never breathed a breath of life here on earth she touched many lives. Becca is preceded in death by her great grandparents, Guy Carroll, Lester McCarter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dortch, and Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Thompson. She is survived by her parents, Brandon and Heather Thompson of Choudrant; her maternal grandparents, Greg and Suzanne McCarter of Ruston; her paternal grandparents, Ted and Kim Doughty of West Monroe and Steve Thompson of Austin, TX; her maternal great grandparents, Josie Carroll and Baker and Dorothy Albritton of Ruston; and her aunts, Callie McCarter of Ruston and Haylon Doughty of West Monroe.

Vera Nell Golden Loyd
Graveside services for Vera Nell Golden Loyd, age 74, will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. at Henry Cemetery in Hico under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Rev. Rolly Walker will be officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 12, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Mrs. Loyd was born on January 11, 1929 in Ruston, LA and died on December 10, 2003 after a lengthy illness. She was a resident of Longleaf Care Center in Ruston. She was retired from St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA. Mrs. Loyd was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Felton Loyd, father, W. T. Golden, mother, Virgie Newman Pilgreen and great granddaughter Angel Lory Rollins. Survivors include her daughters, Vickie Neal and husband Kenny of Ruston and Vanessa Schleinkofer and husband Mike of Richmond, VA; son, Clyde G. Loyd of Bastrop; two sisters, Syble Sweeney of West Monroe and Zelda Loyd and husband Odie of Shreveport; one sister-in-law, Myzelle Loyd of Hico; five grandchildren, Valerie Neal, Velissa Rollins and husband Shane, Vanna Neal, Tara Schleinkofer and Tyler Schleinkofer; one great grandson, Blaine Nolan Rolllins.

Robbie Leone Alexander Willard
Robbie Leone Alexander Willard was born in Lincoln Parish on December 27, 1904, to Dolly Mitchell and Thomas Clark Alexander. She graduated from Simsboro High School and attended Louisiana Polytechnical Institute where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Antioch and later worked in the office of the Lincoln Parish Superintendent of Education. On May 1, 1932, she was married to Roy Willard. They lived in New Orleans and Philadelphia before moving to Ruston after World War II where Mr. Willard opened an accounting firm. Miss Robbie was very active in her community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Quota Club, Eastern Star, Arts Club, Department Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Ruston Chamber of Commerce. She served on the Mayor's Commission for Women, the Lincoln Council on Aging, and was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Boy's and Girl's Club. She also worked with the Louisiana Tech International Student's Association and the Ruston Beautification Foundation. Mrs. Willard was awarded the Robert E. Russ Award for Community Service in 1996. She was named the 75th Anniversary Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation and received medals of appreciation from the North Louisiana Veterans. She began and organized the annual Art's Club Christmas Parties held for several years to honor and thank all Lincoln Parish Veterans. She served on a committee that worked to raise funds for the Veteran's Memorial placed in front of City Hall, and she also actively supported the North Louisiana Military Museum. She is survived by her daughter, Robbie Anne Morris; son-in-law, Thomas Carrol Morris; grandsons, Thomas Willard Morris and Lee Carrol Morris, his wife Laura; and two great grandchildren, Stella Jane Morris and Thomas Alexander Morris. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Sybil Henry of Ruston and a brother, Mr. Kent Alexander of Houston; and several nieces and nephews including Lou Ann and Jerry Smith of Ruston. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband and sisters, Mrs. Floy Taylor and Mrs. Lucille Belton, and brothers, Oren Alexander, Dr. Harrell Alexander, Bill Alexander and Arey Alexander. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Ruston with Dr. Chris Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Hamilton Cemetery in Dubach, LA. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Dr. Robert Howard of College Station, TX and Jerre Smith of Ruston. Other pallbearers are Ray Glover, Don Hammon, Darman Rogers and Denene Stringfellow. Honorary pallbearers include H. L. Henry, Jimmy Howard, Chuck James, Tom Judd, Pat Moseley, Bill Rogers, Willie Williams and Tom Yang. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Louisiana or your preferred charity.
