Rev. C. D. Simmons
Reverend Commie Dwain Simmons began his life's journey on December 12, 1908 when God blessed the union of Rev. J. L. and Mrs. Reasie Ann Simmons with their fifth of ten children. At the age of twelve, young C. Dwain accepted Christ and united with the Macedonia Baptist Church of Choudrant, Louisiana.
Rev. Simmons married Olivia Gipson on November 18, 1932. They raised a niece, the late Margie Phillips, as their daughter. Years later they raised Margie's sons, the late Darryl Delane Woodard and Gregory Maurice Woodard as their own sons. Reverend and Mrs. Simmons shared many happy years together until she departed this life in May 1991.
Reverend Simmons began preaching in 1933. He was called to his first church, Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in March. He was ordained to preach the gospel in April of 1937 and continued with this calling for nearly seven decades.
Reverend Simmons attended elementary school in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana and graduated from Lincoln High School in Ruston, Louisiana. He attended Coleman Bible School in Gibsland, Louisiana. In 1947, he completed four years of study in Mission, Old Testament, Evangelism and Homeletics with the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He received a BTH degree from Moody in 1950. Later, Reverend Simmons continued his studies of the Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was also one of the first ministers to represent the northeast Louisiana region at the National Baptist Convention. He played an intricate part in the fight for civil rights for African Americans in northeast Louisiana during the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
