She grew up there and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School.
She attended The University of Louisiana at Monroe, graduating with a B.S. degree in Nursing.
As a Registered Nurse, she was employed initially in Louisiana, and also served as a U.S. Air Force Reserve Flight Nurse.
Following her marriage on January 13, 1968 to John H. Birkner at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, LA, she continued to work in the nursing profession at many of the locations where John's military career took the family.
Catherine interrupted her working career while she and John were stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, with the arrival of her daughter, Jennifer Lynn on August 23, 1973.
Later, Catherine moved with her family to the Washington, D.C., area and then to Naples, Italy.
Following the opportunity to live and travel in Europe, for three years, her family settled in Reston, VA, in 1988, where Catherine resumed employment as a nurse and John transitioned from military to civilian federal service.
In early 2002, Catherine began experiencing muscle weakness and learned that she had been afflicted with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
As a consequence, John and Catherine both elected to retire and move to the Dallas, TX, area to be near their daughter, Jennifer, now Mrs. Matthew Kent, who was expecting her first child.
Despite the increasing debilitation brought about by disease, Catherine did experience the joy of becoming a grandmother to Alexis Catherine Kent, who was born on Oct 30, 2003.
Catherine is survived by her husband, John of Lewisville, TX; daughter, Jennifer Kent and husband, Matt and granddaughter, Alexis who reside in Highland Village, TX; sister, Kay Smith and husband, Darrell and mother, Mattie Wigley, who reside in San Angelo, TX.
