Mr. O'Sha James Hamilton
In Memory of O'Sha and His Garden
O'Sha Hamilton Community Oasis Award Winner (February 2000)
Owns four walking sticks.

"I keep losing them," he says. "But since I've got four, there's always one around to get me where I'm going".
O'Sha grabs one wooden, well-used stick and hikes himself out of his chair facing the road, where he likes to wave a hello to passing motorists.
His steps small and careful head out to his pride and joy: his garden.
"I've been gardening, oh, for a long time," he says with a grimace as he adjusts his dark-tinted shades to block out the unusually bright February sun. "I use to do it for my daddy. I worked hard and long, and he never did nothin' with it. Nothin'!"
O'Sha waves one arm, while the other taps the waling stick into the soft earth. He's smiling, but it's obvious the injustice is still clear in his mind.
'Then, when folks came up and said what a nice garden we had, my daddy took all the credit. That made me so mad. I said to myself, 'When I get grown, I'll have a garden all myself. I won't let nobody touch it...it'll be mine and people will know it's mine.'
O'Sha takes a long look at the rows of mustards, turnips and collards green at 101 Richardson Drive in West Monroe, LA.
O'Sha knows his garden, and residents who drive on New Natchitoches, know his garden, too.
They stop often to buy fresh greens and they are always welcome.
O'Sha likes chatting - but there are a few things they must remember: No one enters the garden but O'Sha.
No one cuts the crop but O'Sha.
No one weeds or plants or sows the garden but O'Sha. Remember, this is O'Sha's garden.
"I can't stoop no more," O'Sha says. "But people - they don't know how to pick it. They come in here and pick off the top (of the greens). Can you imagine? They just pick off the top and that don't do no good. Just ruins everything. So I don't let nobody pick nothin' - I just do it myself and it gets done right that way. I sell it 50 cents a bunch. That's a good deal, you know," O'Sha says with a huge grin as he gently pokes his finger in my arm. I have this garden year-round.
O'Sha surveys his mustards, collards and green onions again, and you can see the satisfaction on his face.
"I tell you - the day I can't do this garden no more, you might as well put on your funeral clothes, 'cause I'm gonna die!" His face lights up as he laughs. 'It's true! Without my garden, well ... It gives me something to do, you know? I've always worked, and I'm so thankful the good Lord lets me keep on doing it."
O'Sha goes back to his chair again.
A passing truck's horn sounds and O'Sha waves.
So do the greens, their stalks impossibly high, like a strange-looking upside down umbrella, searching for rain.
Mr. O'Sha James Hamilton departed this life on March 3, 2005 as he lived, quietly.
He was born on March 18, 1921 to the late William and Elizabeth Green Hamilton.
Fifty-seven years ago, he married Virgie Mae Richmond.
She preceded him in death just two months ago.
He was preceded in death by his brother and sister (Will Hamilton and Mary Hamilton).
Mr. O'Sha leaves a brother, (Simon Douglas Hamilton) and two sisters: (Annie Lee Hamilton Lewis and Alice Hamilton Tucker).
He graduated from Monroe Color High School.
He enlisted into the 450th Army Air Force Unit and received American Campaign Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and World War II Victory Medal.
He was a jack of all trades.
He was daddy to his three children, Johnny, Alice and Janice and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The arrangements are viewing 10:00 AM until 11:45 on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, followed by services at 12:00 noon at St. Joseph's Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Lorenzo M. Price, Sr., Pastor.
