She was born Leslie Irene Finch on January 27, 1913 at Stage, MS, and died March 16, 2005 at Winnsboro, LA.
Her parents, Marshall F. Finch and Mary Anderson Finch moved from Mississippi, to Louisiana, in 1913, first to Delhi, and then to Kilbourne.
Irene attended Kilbourne School, going to school in a horse-drawn buggy.
After graduating from Kilbourne High School, she attended Normal Teachers College at Natchitoches, LA, and then began a forty-year teaching career at age eighteen in a one-room school at Pine Grove community west of Kilbourne.
Her transportation to school was a saddle horse that once dumped her into a roadside borrow pit, resulting in, as one of her students remembered decades later, the "maddest, wettest, teacher" he had ever seen.
She and her first husband, Charles J. "DocK" Gordy married in March, 1934.
Making their first home in Wisner, LA, they had two children.
The family later moved to Ward III of Franklin Parish, where she returned to teaching in another one-room school at Little Egypt, on the banks of the Bayou Macon.
While teaching in public and private schools in Franklin Parish, she continued her education at Northwestern State University, Natchitoches and Northeast State University, Monroe.
She taught in Franklin, until age 67, and then she substituted.
After the death of her first husband, she married Troy Brent, and they continued to reside in Ward III.
Irene was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles J. "Dock" Gordy and Troy Brent; her son, Charles J. "Chuck" Gordy, Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Mary Jordan Gordy; her parents, Marshall F. and Mary Anderson Finch; six brothers, William E., John C., Leonidas P., Carey, Lawrence, and Marshall F., Jr. Finch, five sisters; Ruby Finch Thompson, Lurline Finch Randall, Annie Laura Finch, Fannie Pearl Finch, and Mary Agnes Finch.
