April 15, 2005 - Obituaries from The News-Star, Monroe, Louisiana 71201
MRS. DORIS YVONNE DICKINSON
Kilpatrick Funeral Home - West Monroe, Louisiana
Graveside services for Doris Yvonne Dickinson, 69, of Payette, Idaho, and a former resident of West Monroe, LA, will be 10:00 AM, Friday, April 15th, 2005, at Antioch Cemetery in Eros, LA.
Officiating will be Rev. Mark Fenn under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.
Mrs. Dickinson was born July 8th, 1935, in Monroe, LA, to Abbie Lloyd and Daisy Blake Bacon, and she died April 7th, 2005, in Payette, Idaho.
Doris was an excellent student from grade one to graduate school and continued with her studies throughout her life.
She graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1953, from Northeast Louisiana University in 1956, and from Louisiana State University with honors in 1958, with an MA in History, and later earned an MA in Communications from the University of Northern Colorado.
She was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Fraternity.
Doris taught and served as librarian in the Manitou Springs District, near Colorado Springs, CO, for over three decades, during which time, she reared her three children, Robert Edmond Bray of Little Rock, AR, William Stuart Bray of London, England, and Collyn Yvonne Bray Swanson of Alexandria, VA, all of whom survive her.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ralph Edmond Bray, II, Benjamin Oscar Swanson, Abbie Lyn Swanson and step-grandson, Steven Coda Colley.
Other survivors include her second husband of five years, Everette Lester Dickinson of Payette, Idaho, and her first husband of forty years, Ralph Edmond Bray, her mother, Daisy Blake Bacon and her brother, Lloyd Bacon, both of West Monroe, LA.
Doris's family, especially her children and grandchildren were, by far, the most important things in her life, but she also loved books, art, dancing, music and traveling.
Rather than cowering from her approaching death, she lived life as fully as her failing body permitted.
In the last months of her life, she toured South Africa, and during her final weeks, she made a trip to China.
Her devotion to her family and friends will be long remembered and cherished.
From early childhood, Doris steadfastly supported the less fortunate people she encountered, especially if they were children.
Throughout her adult life, she subsidized students lacking lunch money and decent clothing.
She spent her last years in Payette, Idaho, where she quickly made many enduring friendships and where she participated in community affairs, including serving as vice-president of the Payette Library Board, an activity that gave her great pleasure.
Active pallbearers include Steven Colley, Fred and Pat Norris, Kelton and Max Bacon, and Johnny Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tuney Bayles and Joe Hart.
