Dianne Sparkman, a laborer, died Sunday of respiratory failure at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 42. Ms. Sparkman was born in Auburn, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 36 years. Survivors include her stepfather, John Black Jr.; four brothers, John, Mac Arthur, David and Ernest Sparkman Jr.; and three sisters, Bobbie Rainley, Carline Owens and Gladys Jackson. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Majestic Mortuary, 1833 Oretha C. Haley Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Park Cemetery.

Victor John Brown Sr., an engineer with McKenzie Chemical, died Aug. 30 of undetermined causes at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. He was 45. Mr. Brown was born in New Orleans and was a longtime resident of Pearl River. He was a 1975 graduate of Pearl River High School and was a member of the Buck Masters Hunt Club. Survivors include his father, Glen Brown; his mother, Anita Brown; a son, Victor John Brown Jr.; two daughters, Heather Randolph and Courtney Lea Brown; a brother, Darryl Glen Brown; a sister, Karen Poppler; and a grandchild. Luella Burrell Segue, a food service manager with the Orleans Parish school system, died Sunday of undetermined causes at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 72. Mrs. Segue was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of the New Orleans and State Food Service associations. She was a member of Greater Hill of Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Keith and Wilmer Segue Jr.; three daughters, Fern Patterson, Shelia Hookfin and Wanda Lewis; a sister, Dorothy Alexander Howard; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Seamon B. "Buddy" Wyres Jr., a carpenter, died Tuesday of a heart attack at Slidell Memorial Hospital. He was 44. Mr. Wyres was born in New Orleans and lived in Slidell. Survivors include his father, Seamon B. Wyres; his mother, Barbara W. Wyres; and a sister, Patricia W. Cocran . Joy Horine Desforges, a homemaker, died Thursday at her home. She was 82. Ms. Desforges was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie. She was a Bible teacher at Mid-City Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Kenner, and Celebration Church. Leonia Nunez, 90

Leonia A. Nunez, a businesswoman and homemaker, died Sunday at Chalmette Medical Center. She was 90. Mrs. Nunez was a lifelong resident of Violet, where she operated a restaurant and served as postmaster. She was the mother of former state Sen. Sammy Nunez Jr., D-Chalmette, and former Louisiana School Board President Tookie Nunez, who preceded her in death.
"My mother lived life to the fullest," Sammy Nunez said.
Mrs. Nunez and her first husband, Samuel Nunez Sr., opened Sam's Restaurant in 1933 and operated it for 40 years. She also took on the role of postmaster after the postmaster general came to town, heard of Mrs. Nunez, and offered her the job during a visit to her restaurant.
"She loved cooking and loved people," Nunez said
In 1965, Mrs. Nunez took part in the development of the St. Bernard Memorial Gardens. She stayed active in the development until her death.
After Samuel Nunez Sr. died in 1969, Mrs. Nunez went back to school and earned her GED, then took a job at the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. She stayed there for 12 years.
"She just liked serving people. If anybody gets involved in as many people businesses as she was, you got to like people and like serving them," Nunez said. "She enjoyed meeting people and doing business with people."
Mrs. Nunez was active in community affairs, especially those at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she was krewe captain of the annual ball for more than 50 years. She never missed a single ball, Nunez said.
The Islenos Cultural Society and Heritage Festival named her queen of the festival when she was 85, and The Violet Shrimp Festival Committee selected her as queen of the Blessing of the Fleet when she was 88.
Besides her son, survivors include a stepdaughter, Marie Gonzales; two sisters, Pauline Gonzales and Lillian "Babe" Brooks; a brother, Robert "Potchie" Asevedo; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be said Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Violet. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 Virtue St. and Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

Betty Guidry Haas, a homemaker, died Sunday at her home. She was 76. Mrs. Haas was born in New Orleans and lived in Mandeville for the past two years. Survivors include her husband, George William Haas; a daughter, Diane H. Muhs; a brother, Horace Lawrence "Larry" Guidry Jr.; two sisters, Hazel C. Foltmer and Patricia G. Charlene Spann Bacchus, a retired Sears, Roebuck and Co. technician, died Tuesday of complications from leukemia at Tulane Medical Center. She was 50. Mrs. Bacchus was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She had received the Sears Appreciation award, had been sergeant at arms at the St. Mary of the Angels School and a member of the Black Panthers. Survivors include a son, Warren Bacchus Jr.; a daughter, Tamyra Bacchus; her mother, Jean Washington; a brother, Donald Martin; a sister, Gail Henry; and three grandchildren. Essie Lee Green, a caregiver, died Friday of cardiopulmonary arrest at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 72. Mrs. Green was born in Hazelhurst, Miss., and lived in Gretna. She was a senior deaconess and a member of the Usher Board and Pastor's Aid Club at Regular Baptist Church. She also was a member of Household of Ruth. Survivors include a son, Charlie Green; three daughters, Darlene White and Janet and Carolyn Green; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
