SLOM, LANCE
05/12/02
Lance Slom, 43, concert enthusiast
Lance Slom, a longtime fixture of the local rock scene who worked as a band manager, concert promoter, doorman, security guard and all-around character, died April 29 of heart failure and complications from diabetes at his home. He was 43.
"There was never a dull moment with Lance," said entertainment attorney Greg Eveline, who co-managed Stavin' Chain, the House Levelers, Lynn August and other local artists with Mr. Slom. "He knew everybody, and was friends with everybody."
Mr. Slom was born in Philadelphia and attended high school in Tampa, Fla. After a security guard caught him sneaking into a concert, the guard asked Mr. Slom to help prevent others from doing the same thing. That sparked a lifelong interest in the concert business.
Mr. Slom spent several months a year in New Orleans during the 1970s, then eventually moved here. Promoters employed him as a "runner" to perform the odd jobs associated with concerts: Delivering pop singer Debbie Gibson's clothes to a laundromat. Hunting down a guitar for soul singer Terence Trent D'Arby to smash onstage. Driving the late INXS singer Michael Hutchence around town. Providing security for the late comedian Sam Kinison on a late-night romp through New Orleans.
For many years Mr. Slom was the chief of security at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival's largest stage, then called the WWL-TV/Ray-Ban Stage, processing each day's procession of name-droppers who sought backstage and onstage access. He performed a similar function as a doorman at Jimmy's and other clubs. While working the door at Tipitina's one night in the mid-1980s, he granted John Fogerty, the former leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival, admission to a sold-out Robert Cray concert.
"You get to do a lot of groovy things, and it's crazy and fun," Mr. Slom once said of his unconventional occupation. "The whole problem with it is that sometimes it's feast or famine."
To make ends meet, Mr. Slom occasionally worked outside the music industry, including a brief stint as an office receptionist.
But his first love was rock ‘n' roll. He interacted with the likes of Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Elvis Costello and Lenny Kravitz. When an MTV crew came to town in 1989, Slom worked as its "Mardi Gras liaison." Indicative of his status as a naturalized New Orleans character, Mr. Slom served as the "administrative negotiator" for the original Krewe of Motha Roux marching organization.
"One of his jobs was to make me look good as he negotiated our way into places we were not allowed," said Louis Nugent, Motha Roux's "king for life."
Mr. Slom's colorful appearance and idiosyncratic take on life afforded him his own celebrity. As part of a summer 1989 story about New Orleans, Rolling Stone dubbed Mr. Slom the "biggest man in the Big Easy." He worked as an extra in the film "Angel Heart" and appeared in various music videos and commercials.
"It's like Andy Warhol said, ‘Everybody's gonna be famous for 15 minutes,' " Mr. Slom said in 1989. "I think I'm working on almost an hour now, so I'm waiting for it to burst."
Survivors include a sister, Sherry Slom of Tampa. All Faiths Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., is in charge of arrangements. On May 19 at 5 p.m., the Maple Leaf Bar will hold a memorial party.
