Thomas N. Bernard, a retired president of Bernard and Nungesser, died Wednesday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Bernard was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Isidore Newman School and Tulane University, where he was a member of the Navy ROTC and Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the USS Birmingham. Among the campaign medals he was awarded was the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was a member of the Boston Club, the Louisiana Club, Avoca Duck Club, Sons of the Revolution, the Society of Colonial Wars and several Carnival organizations. Survivors include his wife, Adelaide Phillips Bernard; a son, Thomas N. Bernard Jr.; two daughters, Camille Bernard McGraw and Eleanor Bernard Carney; a sister, Lucille Bernard Trueblood; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bultman Funeral Home, 3338 St. Charles Ave. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

David Charles Gates, a fifth-grade student at Madisonville Junior High School, died Wednesday of heart failure at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 10. David was born in Hammond and lived in Madisonville for the past four years. Survivors include his father, Charles H. Gates of Albany; his mother, Susan Henderson; a sister, Claire Marie Byrd; his grandparents, Bill and Rita Henderson and Herman and Ellen Page; and his step grandparents, June and John Blanchard Jr. A funeral will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

Jerry Lewis Compton Sr., a truck driver, died Sunday of undetermined causes at Duncan Regional Hospital in Oklahoma. He was 61. Mr. Compton was born in New Orleans, lived in Hammond and then moved to Marlow, Okla., where he had lived for the past six years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He had been a member of Victory Baptist Church in Hammond and attended Woodland Park Baptist Church in Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Janice Annette Compton; six sons, Aaron Scott Compton of Diamondhead, Miss., Jerry Lewis Compton Jr. of Thibodaux, Charles "Ricky" Motichek of Rose Pine, Terrance "Terry" Clifton Compton of Metairie and Harry Paul Sanders Jr. and Troy Clifton Compton of Duncan, Okla.; two daughters, Paula Renné Logan of Simpsonville, S.C., and Kimberly Annette Sanders of Duncan; two brothers, Johnny Compton of Pumpkin Center and Melvin "Jackie" Compton of Hammond; three sisters, Shirley Brewer of Baton Rouge, Doris Trapper of Independence and Ellen Trapper of Ponchatoula; and 21 grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow. Burial was in Marlow Cemetery.

August "Poppa Smurf" "Lil Ike" Ike Richard Jr., a truck driver for Crescent City Transport, died July 26 from a stroke at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 63. Mr. Richard was born in New Orleans and lived in Harvey. Survivors include his companion, Melanie Jeanpierre; six sons, Lucien, Joseph, Brence, Eugene, Alvin and Manuel Richard; seven daughters, Carol Ann, Latoya, Trenise, Debra, Fayla, Melanie and Marilyn Richard; a sister, Geraldine Charles; 37 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Davis Mortuary Service Inc., 6820 West Bank Expressway, Marrero. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Merrick Cemetery in Violet.

Alexander "Bro" Stewart Jr., a laborer, died Sunday of lung cancer at his home. He was 60. Mr. Stewart was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Norma "Jeannie" Stewart; three sons, Dwayne Hicks and Tyrone and Jerome Smith; two daughters, Troylynn and Lisa Smith; two stepsons, Tyrone and Kendrick Williams; a stepdaughter, Nicole Williams; three brothers, Albert Jones and Charles and John Stewart; two sisters, Barbara Richards and Jeanette Martin; and 10 grandchildren. Charley "O.C." Overstreet, a retired press operator with The Times-Picayune, died Saturday at his home. He was 83. Mr. Overstreet was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., and lived in Algiers. Survivors include his wife, Maude Overstreet; three daughters, Gale M. Sanders, Maryalice Johnson and Nancy Overstreet; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Shanelle Marie Meggs, a security guard, died Tuesday at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center of gunshot wounds. She was 31. Ms. Meggs was a lifelong resident of Vacherie. She was a graduate of St. James High School and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and Nichols State University. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir. Survivors include two sons, Shane and Camrin Grows; a daughter, Joy Grows; her father, Albert Meggs; her mother, Brenda Meggs; two sisters, Trina Dorris and Meeka Dennis; and her grandmother, Juanita Stewart. Harry "Moose" Morris, a retired bus driver for the Regional Transit Authority, died Monday of heart failure at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 60. Mr. Morris was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended McDonogh No. 35 High School. He was an Air Force veteran. Survivors include his companion, Lois Whitney; a son, Kevin Coffil; a daughter, Sabrina Whitney; two stepsons, Ronald and Kevin Whitney; his father, Clarence Powers Sr.; a brother, Clarence Powers Jr.; five sisters, Gloria Stovall, Sadie Robertson, Freddie Mae Reed, Avis Newell and Constance Brown; and five grandchildren. Billie Oden Knight Harrell, a bag assembler for Gaylord's Department Store, died Tuesday at Garden Park Hospital in Gulfport, Miss. She was 77. Mrs. Harrell was born in Laurel, Miss., lived in Bogalusa and lived in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area for the past 20 years . Survivors include a son, Cregg Knight of Mandeville; a daughter, Cindy Knight Marange of Mandeville; two brothers, Dale Oden of Ruston and Bobby Oden of Tennessee; two sisters, Mary Oden Davis of Jackson, Miss., and Becky Oden Beebe of Picayune, Miss.; and three grandchildren. A graveside service will be held today at 12:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Biloxi. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, 2714 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi.

Connie Genovese Halprin, a homemaker, died July 23 of cancer at her home. She was 45. Mrs. Halprin was born in New Orleans and lived in Murrysville, Pa., for the past four years. She graduated from Mercy Academy, the University of New Orleans and Tulane Law School. She was a former assistant district attorney for Harry Connick Sr. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She was a parishioner of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Murrysville and a former parishioner of St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Metairie. Survivors include her husband, Richard Jared Halprin; a son, Jared Michael Halprin; a daughter, Erin Leigh; her mother, Constance Dares Genovese of New Orleans; a brother, Martin Genovese of Houston; and a sister, Michelle Genovese of New Orleans. Myrtle Sanders Hancock, a retired telephone operator for BellSouth, died Thursday of a heart attack at University Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. She was 74. Mrs. Hancock was born in Pattison, Miss., and lived in McComb, Miss., for many years. She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church. She was active with the Joymakers Volunteer for Food Share and a volunteer for the annual Tour-for-Cure that benefits the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Survivors include her husband, Dewey Vernon Hancock; five daughters, Charlotte Phillips of Mandeville, Helen Smith Walter of Tylertown, Miss., Carol G. Chapman of Summit, Miss., Nita McKenzie Gerald of Bogue Chitto, Miss., and Joy Steele of Smithdale, Miss.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Yvonne S. Withers, a telephone operator, died May 17 of colon cancer at East Jefferson General Hospital. She was 52. Mrs. Withers was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie. Survivors include her husband, Milton J. Withers; a daughter, Jeannette Withers Fernandez; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
