POPE, MARY LEE
06/02/02
Mary Lee Pope, longtime journalist in La., Miss.
Mary Lee Pope, a retired journalist who worked in Mississippi and Louisiana, died Friday at LifeCare Hospital in New Orleans. She was 92.
A native of Union Church, Miss., who had lived in the New Orleans area since 1949, Mrs. Pope earned a bachelor's degree at Louisiana State University and a master's degree at the University of Mississippi.
She taught high school English in Mississippi and worked in the state Highway Department and the Works Progress Administration, which was part of the New Deal. She then became a reporter at The Hattiesburg American in Hattiesburg, Miss.
When the United States entered World War II, most of the able-bodied men on the newspaper's staff joined the armed forces. That meant that The American's reporting team became overwhelmingly female, with women covering events and beats that traditionally had been reserved for male reporters. For instance, in addition to covering a round of luncheon-club speeches, Mrs. Pope regularly reported on trials and the Forrest County Sheriff's Office. She once touched off a minor furor when she revealed that the sheriff let jail inmates have conjugal visits.
She also covered a murder from the time police found the body until the killer was sentenced to die, but her mother forbade her to attend the execution.
Mrs. Pope, who also had a weekly column, gave up her career for marriage and motherhood.
She moved to New Orleans when her husband, Paul M. Pope Jr., was transferred to the city by Humble Oil & Refining Co.
In the 1970s, she went back to work as an editorial assistant in New Orleans on The Sugar Journal. She was a member of Chi Omega, the American Association of University Women and Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church, where she was one of the first two women elected to the Board of Deacons. She later joined St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Metairie and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Picayune, Miss., because she and her husband had a weekend home nearby.
Survivors include a son, John Pope; two daughters, Brenda P. Stickler of Albuquerque, N. M., and Cynthia Pope of Rohnert Park, Calif.; a sister, Sue Scott McCann of Arnold, Md.; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Bultman Funeral Home, 3338 St. Charles Ave. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
