Marvin Anthony Prados Sr., a merchant seaman welder, died Tuesday of cancer at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 57. Mr. Prados was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Joseph S. Clark High School. He served in the Army. Survivors include a son, Marvin Anthony Prados Jr.; a daughter, Marlene Ruth Bellamy; two brothers, Kenneth and Ferdinand Prados Jr.; five sisters, Antoinette Jones, Cornell Goudeau, Myrna Patterson, Delores Dugas and Vanessa Miller; and seven grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday at Boissiere-Labat Family Funeral Service, 1703 N. Claiborne Ave. Burial was in Holt Cemetery.

Terry Turner, a homemaker, died Sunday of undetermined causes at Charity Hospital. She was 50. Mrs. Turner was a lifelong resident of Garyville. She was a choir member at True Light Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Kesee and Ashley Turner; her mother, Rosia Suggs; three brothers, James, Bobby and Perry Suggs; a sister, Belinda S. Zeno; and two grandchildren. William Albert Faucheux, a retired land surveyor for Shell Oil Co., died Wednesday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Faucheux was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 40 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He graduated from Warren Easton High School and received a master's degree in engineering and forestry from Louisiana State University. He was a member of the American Legion and was a parishioner of St. Ann Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Duncan Faucheux; a son, Maurice Albert Faucheux; two daughters, Michelle Faucheux Darling and Monique Faucheux Shepard; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Lawrence Breaux, a retired employee of St. Charles Grain Elevator, died June 6 of cancer at Doctors Hospital of Jefferson. He was 75. Mr. Breaux was born in Seller and lived in New Sarpy for the past 50 years. He was a Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. Tyrone Poplus, a retired longshoreman, died Saturday of diabetes at his home. He was 60. Mr. Poplus was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for 47 years. He was a member of International Longshoremen's Association Local 3000 and Haven United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir. Survivors include two daughters, Kecia Maria Poplus and Yolanda Gail Butler; two brothers, Samuel G. Poplus Jr. of Kenner and Andrew L. Poplus; a sister, Barbara P. Williams of LaPlace; and two grandchildren. James H. May Sr., a retired ground support employee of the Space Shuttle at Lockheed Martin, died Wednesday of complications after heart bypass surgery at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla. He was 75. Mr. May was born in Columbus, Ohio, and lived in Lakeland for the past 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 8 in Winter Haven, Fla. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mary C. May; three sons, Allen May of Kooskia, Idaho, and James and John May; two daughters, Deb Hartman of Mesquite, Texas, and Cheryl May of Oxford, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Marcia Beuth of Palm Bay, Fla.; a brother, Robert May of Columbus; two sisters, Madeline Prima of New Orleans and Marie Treado of Columbus; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Clarence Wilhelm Samuels Sr., a vocalist who was one of the first artists released on the Chess brothers label Aristocrat, died Monday at Jefferson Health Care Center. He was 79.
Mr. Samuels was born in Baton Rouge and lived in New Orleans for the past 10 years.
Mr. Samuels was known as a "blues shouter," and was well known for his songs "Going to the Hop," "Chicken-Hearted Woman," and "Lolly Pop Momma." He wrote and recorded at least 50 songs.
Samuels was most popular in the 1940s and ‘50s. He started his career with his father's band, the Roseland Six, in Baton Rouge. In the ‘40s he played with Joe Turner. He recorded "I Ain't Gonna Do It" with Dave Bartholomew. Saxophone player Ornette Coleman started his career with Samuels' band in the 1940s. Mr. Samuels also managed Johnny Adams from 1962 to ‘67.
"He lived a full life," said his daughter-in-law, Theresa Samuels. "He enjoyed himself. He traveled the world. I think he enjoyed what he did. He lived his life the way he wanted to live it."
Two years ago he played at a music festival in the Netherlands, his son said. "He hadn't had a gig like that in quite a while," said guitarist Clarence Samuels Jr.. "For the first time in my life, I played his music from the ‘40s. That was quite a treat for me and for him."
His father had been playing around town almost every week at benefits and local clubs, including at Ponderosa Stomp during this year's Jazzfest.
Last year, Mr. Samuels Sr. went back into the studio and re-recorded some of his more popular hits. He sold his latest CD, "Louise," to family, friends and fans.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Moultrie Samuels; four other sons, Dexter Samuels of Orlando, Fla., Anthony Samuels of Las Vegas, Nev., and Clifford and Edgar Samuels; two daughters, Sharon Samuels of Daytona, Fla., and Andrea Samuels of Las Vegas; three brothers, Edward Samuels of Baton Rouge, Carlos Samuels of Houma and Michael Samuels of Boutte; two sisters, Marion and Eddy Marie Samuels of Houston; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church, 1925 Ursulines Ave. Visitation will be today at 4 p.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave., and Saturday at 8 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Restlawn Park.

Darryl Benard Brown, a painter for Commercial Paint Co., died June 7 of a gunshot wound in Jefferson Parish. He was 45. Mr. Brown was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a former employee of Avondale Shipyard, Louisiana Power & Light Co., Kaiser Aluminum, Sears and the Army Corps of Engineers. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include two sons, Damian and Alonquin Benard Brown; two daughters, Javonka Darrell and Kia Nicole Brown; three brothers, Donnell, Keith and Kevin Brown; two sisters, Janice Atkinson and Natasha Brown; his stepfather, Ivory Brown; his grandfather, Stoney Woodson of Michigan; and three grandchildren. The Rev. James C. Babb, a Jesuit priest, died Wednesday of renal failure at Ignatius Residence. He was 87. Father Babb was born in Brockton, Mass., and lived in New Orleans. He graduated from Boston College High School. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Grand Coteau in 1933 and attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., St. Louis University and St. Mary's College in St. Mary, Kan., where he was ordained in 1946. He was the former director of the Jesuit Mission Bureau and served in Sri Lanka. He was a former rector of St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, the Jesuit House of Studies at Spring Hill College in Mobile and Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He served as superior or director at retreat houses in New Orleans, Grand Coteau and Atlanta. From 1973 to 1977 he was vice provincial at the Pastoral and International Apostolates of the New Orleans Providence. He was assigned to Ignatius Retreat House in Atlanta from 1991 until last week, when he came to New Orleans. Survivors include a sister of Granite Bay, Calif. Maude B. Phillips, a counselor with the Orleans Parish public school system and a day-care owner, died Tuesday at St. Charles General Hospital. She was 82. Mrs. Phillips was born in Memphis, Tenn., and lived in New Orleans for most of her life. She graduated from Xavier University and Louisiana State University and almost completed a doctorate at Tulane University. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Kappa sororities, which honored her for services to them, and she was given an award by the mayor's office for her contributions to children. She was a member of Mount Zion Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, William E. Phillips; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
