Albert C. "Bud" Edwards Sr., a retired insurance agent, died Wednesday of kidney failure at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 69. Mr. Edwards was born in Wilder, Idaho, and lived in Kenner for 25 years. He worked for State Farm Insurance Co. for 34 years. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Freida Rosa Edwards; a daughter, Pamela Rooney; two sons, Calvin Liggett and Albert Edwards Jr.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.

RHODEN, MARY
05/29/02

Mary Rhoden, a homemaker, died Monday of ovarian cancer at her home. She was 69. Mrs. Rhoden was born in Montgomery, Ala., and was raised in Jacksonville, Fla. She lived in Baton Rouge since 1979 and was a former resident of New Orleans and Metairie. Survivors include her husband, William E. Rhoden; two sons, William E. Rhoden Jr. of Hartford, Conn., and Robert Rhoden of Mandeville; two brothers, James Hunton of Philadelphia and Charles Hunton of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 17510 Monitor Ave., Baton Rouge. Visitation begins at 2 p.m.

BUTLER, ALBERTHA ‘BIG MAMA' HARKLESS

Albertha "Big Mama" Harkless Butler, a homemaker, died Saturday at Meadowcrest Hospital. She was 77. Ms. Butler was born in Gheens and lived in Gretna. Survivors include two sons, Joseph and Edison Butler; a daughter, Dianne Butler Ayro; two sisters, Enola Harkless Jackson and Cloretha Harkless Boyd; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Hill Baptist Church, 1409 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Hill Cemetery. Murray Henderson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

CANGELOSI, LOUISE ‘TON' SCIORTINO

Louise "Ton" Sciortino Cangelosi, former co-owner of Larry's Food Store, died Sunday at Metropolitan Hospice. She was 80. Mrs. Cangelosi was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a parishioner of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. She was a member of the Elenian Club, Les Bijoux, That Ol' Gang Of Mine and the Bowlers Club. Survivors include a son, Lawrence C. Cangelosi Jr.; a daughter, Patricia C. Barrere; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 7300 Crowder Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CARTER, CHERRY MARIE WISE

Cherry Marie Wise Carter, a homemaker, died Thursday of respiratory failure at Charity Hospital. She was 52. Ms. Carter was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a former employee of the Landmark Hotel and Ashley's Laundry. Survivors include her fiancé, Aaron Gray; two sons, David and Derrick Carter; three daughters, Karen, Charmaine and Germaine Carter; her mother, Carrie Russell Wise; a brother, Alex Wise Jr.; two sisters, Robin Wise Jackson and Michelle Wise Green; and 16 grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 943 N. Tonti St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Holt Cemetery. Magee's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BELL, RUSSELL SR.

Russell Bell Sr., a retired supply manager at Alvin Callender Field, died Friday of heart failure at his home. He was 78. Mr. Bell was born in New Orleans and lived in Marrero for 37 years. He was a sergeant in the Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a boxing trainer and coached Little League baseball. Survivors include two sons, Beryl and Russell Bell Jr.; a sister, Myrtle Galloway; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Laudumiey Funeral Home, 5001 Chef Menteur Highway. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

EWING, JOYCELYN ‘MICHELLE'

Joycelyn "Michelle" Ewing, a licensed practical nurse at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, died June 4 of pneumonia at her home. She was 41. Ms. Ewing was born in New Orleans and lived in Monticello, Miss., for many years before returning to New Orleans. She attended L.E. Rabouin High School and Copiah Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Miss., where she received a nursing degree. She was a former employee of Oxford Health Care in Jackson, Miss., and Family Health Care Clinic in Monticello. She was a former member of Stronger Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Terrance Maye; a daughter, Jamie N. Maye; her father, James Smith; her stepmother, Janet Smith; four brothers, Robert Maye of Florida, Sherman Jefferson of New Hebron, Miss., Keith Maye of Jayess, Miss., and Henry Maye; five sisters, Terry M. Singleton of Houston, Pamela Maye Avondale of Estate, Ga., Kimberly Gholar of Oakvale, Miss., Shontundra Maye of Brookhaven, Miss., and Thelma Cook; her grandfather, Braggie May; and a grandchild. A funeral will be held Thursday at noon at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Monticello. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Monticello. Lula Reed, a homemaker, died Monday at her home. She was 84. Mrs. Reed was born in Brookhaven, Miss., and lived in Metairie for the past eight years. She was a graduate of Alexander High School and a member of Hickory Knoll Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Doris Strander of Mobile, Ala., and Deborah Norah; two sisters, Josephine Peters of New Orleans and Mary C. Sanders of Brookhaven; seven grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Helen O'Neill Rosato, a retired office manager at Trapolin Insurance Agency, died Saturday at her daughter's home. She was 96. Ms. Rosato was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 14 years. She graduated from Sophia B. Wright High School and Soule Business College. Survivors include two sons, Deacon J. Ronald and Elward A. Rosato; a daughter, Marilyn R. Hansen; a sister, Ida Bell Keehan; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Flora Katherine Kearney, a retired secretary at Northeast Missouri State College, died May 26 at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville, Mo. She was 86. Ms. Kearney was born in New Orleans and lived in Kirksville for many years. She was a graduate of Loyola University and received a master's degree in library science from Peabody University in Nashville, Tenn. Survivors include a brother, Harold L. Kearney Jr. of Kingsport, Tenn.; and a sister, Flora McLauglin Kearney of Muncie, Ind. A graveside service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Garden of Memories. Professional Funeral Service handled arrangements.

Mary Mae Triche Ruiz, a retired child care provider, died Sunday at Chalmette Medical Center. She was 85. Mrs. Ruiz was born in Napoleonville and lived in Yscloskey for the past two years. Survivors include a son, Warren L. Ruiz; a daughter, Susan Ruiz Branigan; a sister, Elma T. Dolese; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St. in Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Anne Catholic Church Cemetery in Napoleonville.

Vinicia Shanté Smith, a student at Frederick Douglas High School, died Saturday at Charity Hospital of stab wounds in the chest and arm. She was 16. Miss Smith was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was an employee of Mulate's Restaurant. Survivors include her father, Vincent Washington; her mother, Colette Smith; a brother, Kijuan Smith; and five sisters, Vinguel, Tonshae, Krystal, Quinesha and Danisha Smith. A funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, 1925 Ursuline Ave. Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave., and Monday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park.

WARDSWORTH, ARTHUR

Arthur Wardsworth, a chef who helped open La Riviera Restaurant in Metairie in 1970 and continued to work there until February, died Thursday of cancer at his home in New Orleans. He was 59. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Second Good Hope Baptist Church, 800 Elmira Ave., in Algiers. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna. Murray Henderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PLACKARD, CHRISTINE BESS

Christine Bess Plackard died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at Guest House of Slidell. She was 64. Ms. Plackard was born in New Orleans and lived in San Antonio and in Slidell for 20 years. She was a client at the St. Tammany Association for Retarded Citizens for many years. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

VARNADO, KELLI COLEEN

Kelli Coleen Varnado died Saturday at her home in Jackson, Miss. She was 22. Ms. Varnado was born in Metairie and lived in Jackson for many years. She was a graduate of St. Andrews Episcopal School in Jackson and a member of St. James Episcopal Church. She had served with Americorps, Stewpot Community Service and Camp Bratton Green. Survivors include her mother, Coleen O'Brien; her stepfather, Mark O'Brien; two sisters, Katelyn and Molly O'Brien; and her grandparents, Ann and Randolph Ogden and Yvonne and L.D. Kelleher, all of Baton Rouge, and Charles Herman Varnado of Picayune, Miss. A funeral was held Wednesday at Mark Seepe Funeral Home in Jackson.
