Lawrence W. Jackson, a retired bookkeeper, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center. He was 79. Mr. Jackson was born in New Orleans and lived in Belle Chasse for the past 33 years. He was the recipient of the Senior Citizen Award from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the St. Louis Medallion. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Past Grand Knight Council No. 6357 and Past Faithful Navigator of T.J. Larkin Assembly. Survivors include his wife, Marie Lumpkin Jackson; and two grandchildren . A Mass will be said today at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8968 Louisiana 23, Belle Chasse. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Burial will be in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.

MARINO, JEANNETTE SANTOPADRE

Jeannette Santopadre Marino, a retired purchasing agent for the federal government, died Wednesday of a stroke at Forest Manor Nursing Home. She was 84. Mrs. Marino was born in Houston, lived in New Orleans for 61 years and lived on the north shore for 23 years. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Ann Michel; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.

SLACK, JOHN JR.
06/09/02

John Slack Jr., a longshoreman, died of undetermined causes Thursday at his home. He was 63. Mr. Slack was born in Wilkinson County, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 40 years. He attended Amite County High School. He was an usher at New Hope Baptist Church. He was a member of Longshoreman Local No. 3000. Survivors include three sons, Shelton, Raymond and John Slack III; a daughter, Riesh Moten; his mother, Julia Slack; two brothers, Samuel and Jerry Slack; a sister, Dora Slack; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 1807 LaSalle St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Emory Hill Cemetery in Centreville, Miss. Majestic Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

DANTIN, ODIL DANOS

Odil Danos Dantin, a retired cafeteria supervisor, died Saturday at her home. She was 89. Mrs. Dantin was a lifelong resident of Cut Off. Survivors include five sons, Henry, Roy, Daniel, Harry and Jack Dantin Jr.; two daughters, JoAnn Hohensee and Josephine "Josie" Dantin; a brother, Lester Danos Sr.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. A Mass will be said Tuesday at noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cut Off. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Larose. Falgout Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SEPUT, GASPER VINCENT

Gasper Vincent Seput, a retired independent oyster fisherman in Empire for 54 years, died Wednesday at Kenner Regional Medical Center. He was 81. Mr. Seput was born in Donja Vrucica, Croatia, and lived in New Orleans for the past 75 years. He retired in 1991. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 377 and the United Slavonian Benevolent Association. He was a parishioner of St. Jerome Catholic Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a son, Vincent T. Seput; a daughter, Maria Seput Magee-Perry; a sister, Maré Seput; and a grandchild. A Mass will be said today at noon at Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home, 1717 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.

KELLY, EDWARD J. JR.
05/31/02

Edward J. Kelly Jr., a retired route salesman for the 7-Up Co., died Wednesday at Life Care Hospital. He was 78. Mr. Kelly was born in New Orleans and lived in St. Bernard Parish for the past 39 years. He was an Army sergeant during World War II. He worked for 7-Up for 47 years. Survivors include three sons, Bruce J., Robert J. and Michael A. Kelly; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at Vickers, Verrette and Dornan Funeral Home, 3027 Jean Lafitte Parkway in Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

KAPLAN, JOSÉ
06/01/02

José Kaplan, a retired architect and art dealer, died Monday in North Hampton, Mass. He was 92. Mr. Kaplan was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lived in New Orleans for 15 years before moving to North Hampton. He graduated from the University of Cordoba with a degree in architecture. He built schools and other facilities in the southern part of Argentina. He also was an architect in Puerto Rico before retiring and moving to New Orleans, where he opened and managed an art shop. Survivors include his wife, Olga Pera; a daughter, Marina Esther Kaplan; two sons, Roberto Argentino Kaplan and Julio Argentino Kaplan; and two grandchildren. Services will be private.

JONES, WANDA ANN
05/31/02

Wanda Ann Jones, a homemaker, died May 22 of head injuries at Tulane University Medical Center. She was 29. Miss Jones was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She attended Andrew J. Bell Junior High School and was a former employee of Burger King. Survivors include a son, Darrian Jones; her mother, Beverly Barnes; four brothers, Rickey Jones and Leotha, Bryant and Lawrence Barnes; and a sister, Annette Woods. A funeral will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Carrollton-Green Street Cemetery.

EWALD, KARL RAYMOND JR.

Karl Raymond Ewald Jr., a businessman in the hotel industry, died Friday at his home. He was 83. Mr. Ewald was born in Patterson and lived in Natchez, Miss., for many years. He graduated from Principia Preparatory School in St. Louis and Principia College in Elash, Ill., and he attended Cornell School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, N.Y. He was a former assistant manager at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans and went on to develop several motels, including the Days Inn and Bellemont Motor Hotel and Restaurant in Natchez. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Natchez and its vestry. He was president of the Mississippi Hotel/Motel Association and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Mississippi River Highway Association, the Mississippi Innkeepers, the Historic Natchez Foundation and Trinity Day School. He was a member of the Military and Hospitalier Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was a Paul Harris fellow of the Rotary International. He was chairman of the Advisory Board of City Bank and Trust Co. and a volunteer for the International Executive Service Corps. Survivors include his wife, Bethany Baker Ewald; a son, Karl R. Ewald III of Houston; a daughter, Bethany E. Bultman of New Orleans; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Natchez. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. at the church parish house. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ADAIR, DR. BONNIE

Dr. Bonnie Adair, 79, ophthalmologist
Dr. Bonnie Adair, an ophthalmologist and owner of Expressway Optical, died Monday of complications after surgery at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero. She was 79.
Dr. Adair was born in Bald Knob, Ariz., and lived in Slidell for many years. She graduated from Texas University and was the only female graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1947.
She came to New Orleans as a resident in ophthalmology at Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and made the area her home. She practiced ophthalmology on the West Bank from 1953 to 1993.
Dr. Adair served as president of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology and was an associate professor at Tulane University. She was a member of the Louisiana and Jefferson Parish medical societies and was instrumental in bringing the first electron microscope to West Jefferson Medical Center.
After retiring from her practice, Dr. Adair was an active member of the Slidell Art League, Slidell Photography Club and Bayou Liberty Garden Club. She was a member of First Christian Church in Slidell.
Survivors include five sons, James Davis of Imperial Beach, Calif., John F., Hugh and Robert Davis, all of Coronado, Calif., and William Cole Jewell; five daughters, Susan Jewell Whitaker of New Orleans, Mary Jewell Isolani of New Port Richey, Fla., Peggy Jewell Phillips of Cullowhee, N.C., Barbara Davis Lohlein of Coronado and Elizabeth Davis Bargo of Ramona, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held today at 3 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.

SMITH, ETHEL THORNTON

Ethel Thornton Smith, a retired domestic worker, died Sunday at Crescent City Health Care Center. She was 92. Mrs. Smith was born in Lettsworth and lived in New Orleans for the past 70 years. She was a member of Stronger Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include a niece, Geneva Thornton. A funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Stronger Hope Baptist Church, 2401 S. Galvez St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Tilly's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

STANT, LOUIS ALLEN JR.

Louis Allen Stant Jr., a retired salesman with Louisiana Materials and Co., died Tuesday of heart failure at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 52. Mr. Stant was born in New Orleans and lived in Arabi for the past 20 years. He graduated from Francis T. Nicholls High School and the University of New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Tessler Stant; a son, Richard Oliver Stant; his mother, Lois Parretti Stant; five brothers, Russell Tannich, Billy Maines, and Dominick, Paul and Jude Marchetta; and two sisters, Dellann Boggess and Bonnie Maines. A funeral will be held today at 10:45 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

GARRETT, MARY ANN STACKHOUSE

Mary Ann Stackhouse Garrett, a homemaker, died Wednesday of lung cancer at East Jefferson General Hospital. She was 64. Mrs. Garrett was born in Dupont, Ind., and lived in Kenner for the past 41 years. Survivors include her husband, Freeman L. Garrett; two daughters, Pamela G. Curtis and Christian G. Lavin; her mother, Pansy McQuary Stackhouse; two brothers, Robert and David Stackhouse; two sisters, Dorothy Graves and Catherine Shepard; and six grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at noon at L.A. Muhleisen and Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
