PETERSON, MERLYN JOSEPH W. SR.
February 15, 2003

Merlyn Joseph W. Peterson Sr., a retired superintendent for Cooper T. Smith and Sons, died Monday of heart failure in Covington County Hospital in Collins, Miss. He was 78. Mr. Peterson was born in New Orleans and lived in Picayune, Miss., for the past 17 years. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Helen J. Peterson; a son, Merlyn J.W. Peterson Jr.; four daughters, Shaye Ferrara, Penny Zerr, Gina Esque and Lee Linsten; two brothers, Noell and Morris Peterson; two sisters, Jocelyn Clanton and Doris Blum; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A wake will be held today from 2 to 6 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home, 401 W. Canal St. in Picayune, Miss.

MELTON, ALBERTA
February 15, 2003

Alberta Melton, a homemaker, died Feb. 8 of complications from surgery at Memorial Medical Center. She was 66. Mrs. Melton was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from Joseph S. Clark Senior High School. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Central Congregation. Survivors include her husband, Henry Melton Sr.; two sons, Henry Melton Jr. and Cyril Melton; two daughters, Sabrina M. Cole and Donis Melton; four brothers, Warren, Wilson, Richard and Freddie Summers; a sister, Charlotte Breaux; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1831 A.P. Tureaud St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lakelawn Park cemetery. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BEARD, SCOTT HARVEY
February 15, 2003

Scott Harvey Beard, an inspector at Cytec Industries, died Tuesday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in St. Charles Parish. He was 47. Mr. Beard was born in New Orleans and lived in Destrehan for many years. He was a member of Southshore Community Church. Survivors include his wife, Tammy Neill Beard; a son, Cade Beard; two daughters, Callie and Camlin Beard; his parents, Milton and Juanice Beard of Broaddus, Texas; two brothers, Milton Beard of Kenner and Mike Beard of The Woodlands, Texas; two sisters, Michelle Chance of Lufkin, Texas, and Melissa Denman of The Colony, Texas; and his grandmother, Hester Harvey of Broaddus. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine, Texas. Burial will be in Harvey cemetery in Broaddus.

BAKER, YADIRA YESHDIA
February 15, 2003

Yadira Yeshdia Baker, a student at the University of New Orleans, died Feb. 5 of undetermined causes at her home. She was 21. Ms. Baker was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. Survivors include her father, Michael Hamilton; her mother, Cherylene Celestine; her stepfather, Dwayne Celestine; her stepmother, Rosalind Hamilton; eight brothers, Lionel and Christopher Smith, Julawreance Perkins, Micah Glover, Keith Nevels, and Tiji, Christopher and Charles Sherman; eight sisters, Akeisha Baker, Juerica, Doreél and Dornisha Hamilton, Michelle Nevels, and Lindsay, Lauren and Linzell Smith; and a grandmother, Lucille Baker. A funeral will be held today at 12:30 p.m. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park.

MELENDEZ, HILDA
February 15, 2003

Hilda Melendez, a retired employee of Todd Shipyard, died Feb. 7 in Atlanta. She was 92. Mrs. Melendez was born in St. Bernard Parish and lived in New Orleans for 62 years. She was a member of the Nazarene Association. Survivors include two daughters, Hilda Brooks Anderson Rich and Marcelean Melendez Simpson; four stepdaughters, Erlinda Rochez, Olivia Azila and Olga and Louisa Melendez; two sisters, Irma Washington and Margie Rhodes; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. a funeral will be held today at noon at Greater St. Mary's Baptist Church, 1519 Horace St., Algiers. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Nazarene cemetery in Algiers. Westside/Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PACKNETT, SAMUEL JR.
February 15, 2003

Samuel Packnett Jr., a retired longshoreman, died Tuesday at St. Charles General Hospital. He was 78. Mr. Packnett was born in Centreville, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for many years. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Packnett; four daughters, Joycelyn Miller, Carolyn Brown, Karen Lenox and Sharon Jackson; a sister, Louise Ford; 41 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at House of Faith Church in God in Christ, 2229 Allen St. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Cannon Bean, a homemaker, died Feb. 4 at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. She was 78. Mrs. Bean was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include her husband, Herbert A. Bean Sr.; two sons, Herbert A. Bean Jr. and Michael A. Bean Sr.; four daughters, Brenda Bean Haynes, Joann Condoll, Wanda Jean Barbain and Debbie Ann Robertson; two brothers, Clarence Cannon and Solomom Cannon Jr.; two sisters, Cecilia Cannon Smith and Deborha Cannon Newton; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Florence A. Murphy, a homemaker, died Sunday at River Parishes Hospital. She was 82. Mrs. Murphy was born in Kansas City, Mo., and lived in LaPlace for many years. She attended Angola Tri-State Business College in Indiana. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Antwerp, Ohio, Post 5087, and of Woodland College Community Church. Survivors include a son, David Murphy; three daughters, Colleen Longardner, Linda Alspaugh and Susan Hines; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Community Church, 3400 Louisiana 51, LaPlace. Alexander Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Joseph "Boss" Petit Sr., a retired bus operator for New Orleans Public Service, Inc., died Wednesday at St. Charles General Hospital. He was 84. Mr. Petit was born in Hester and lived in New Orleans for many years. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Roussel Petit; two sons, Herbert J. Petit Jr. of Kenner and Terry M. Petit of Harvey; two daughters, Brenda Copley Robinson of Dallas and Barbara Petit Harris of Metairie; two brothers, Harold "Toyd" and Melvin "Billy" Petit, both of Hester; four sisters, Evelyn Pitts of Gresham, Ore., Diana Marchese of Metairie, Dorothy Roussel of Gonzales and Rose Louivere; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m .at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.

Ruth Brown Williams, a homemaker, died Tuesday at Chateau Living Center. She was 84. Ms. Williams was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Survivors include two sons, Vernon J. Williams Jr. and Donald R. Williams; a brother, William T. Brown Sr.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery.

SOUTHALL, PERCY
November 28, 2002

Percy Southall died Sunday of a heart attack at his home. He was 51. Mr. Southall was born in Plattenville and lived in New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Carol Snowton Southall; a son, Percy Link; a daughter, Annette Southall of Donaldsonville; his father, the Rev. Obbie Southall Sr.; his stepmother, Maude Southall; and four brothers, Leroyal, Curtis, Dwight and Claiborne Southall. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cannon Baptist Church in Plattenville. Williams & Southall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

November 28, 2002

Warren Robear, a retired maintenance worker, died Monday at Easthaven Care Center. He was 75. Mr. Robear was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a former employee of TLC Linen Supply Co. Survivors include a brother, John Edgerson Sr., and four sisters, Emma Robair Benefield of Carson, Calif., and Violet Robair-Green, Dorothy Mae Robair Thomas and Marie Robair Augillard. A funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

RATCLIFF, ELBERT JAMES JR.

Elbert James Ratcliff Jr., an employee of the housekeeping department at Jefferson Parish School Board, died Saturday of lung cancer at Memorial Medical Center. He was 55. Mr. Ratcliff was born in New Orleans and lived in Kenner for the past 45 years. He was a graduate of John H. Martyn High School. He was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Elbert James Ratcliff III; two daughters, Terese and Trenise Ratcliff; four brothers, Melvin Ratcliff, Calvin and Kenneth Martin, and Vernon Ratcliff of New York; two sisters, Maple Harris of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gail Marie Martin; and seven grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Little Zion Baptist Church, 2200 Kenner Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mark cemetery. Susan Humphrey Long, a homemaker, died Wednesday of lung cancer at her home. She was 45. Mrs. Long was born in Baton Rouge and lived in Madisonville for the past four years. Survivors include her husband, Marty Larry Long; her father, Millard F. Humphrey Jr.; her mother, Julia Brouillette Humphrey; a brother, Bobby Humphrey; and a sister, Paula Beagle. John Michael Lemon, a laborer, died Nov. 22 of complications from diabetes in Tucson, Ariz. He was 46. Mr. Lemon was born in New Orleans and lived in Tucson for the past 32 years. He was a member of Apostolic Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Angela Lemon; a son, Jamal Lemon; three daughters, Keisha and Devon Lemon of Amarillo, Texas, and Tricia Lemon Zimba; a brother, Tommie Lemon; three sisters, Ursula Stovall and Doris Chaney Ray, both of Marrero, and Donna Lemon of New Orleans; and two grandchildren.
