Carl Joseph Richard, founder and former owner of Calmar Builders, died Tuesday at his home. He was 89. Mr. Richard was born in Chacahoula and lived in Mandeville. During World War II, he was a draftsman with Equitable Equipment, Higgins Marine Sales and Avondale Marine Ways. He was a member of Perfect Union Masonic Lodge No. 1, Grand Lodge of Louisiana. He was a Mason for more than 50 years. He was a longtime member of Lakeview Fun Lovers Club and a member of the Bards of Bohemia. Survivors include his wife, Martha Edgecombe Richard; a son, Michel "Mitch" Richard; a daughter, Carrol Richard Stumpf of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Enola R. Sara and Marie R. LeBlanc; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be said today at 2 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.

Shirley Sordelet Dobard, a former employee of the Housing Authority of New Orleans and retired computer programmer with Missouri Pacific Railroad, died Wednesday at her home. She was 77. Mrs. Dobard was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from McDonogh No. 35 High School, attended Straight Business College and later earned the designation of certified public accountant. She was formerly employed by Majestic and Standard Life Insurance Companies. She also had been treasurer and chaplain for Louisiana League of Good Government, director of the R.C.I.A. of St. Gabriel Catholic Church and principal of the school of religion. Survivors include her husband, Hubert R. Dobard; one son, Hubert R. Dobard Jr.; two daughters, Valli D. Truehill and Dierdra T. Dobard; one brother, Joseph Sordelet Jr.; and eight grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 4700 Pineda St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery. Yvonne Cook Dennison Miles, a retired physical occupational therapist, died Wednesday at Touro Infirmary. She was 79. Mrs. Miles was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from McDonogh 35 High School and attended Xavier University. She was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and the Mid Day Usher Board. Survivors include her husband, Frank Miles Sr.; two sons, Herbert Jr. and Howard Dennison Sr.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 8 p.m. at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, 3219 Daneel St. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery. D.W. Antonio Guevara Jr., a retired mud engineer, died Feb. 24 at his home. He was 76. Mr. Guevara was born in Sherman, Texas, and lived in Mexico for many years and in Gretna for the past 15 years. He graduated from Sherman High School and attended Texas A&M; University. He was a former employee of Layne and Bowler Co. of Houston and a former mud engineer for NL Bariod, working in the United States, Mexico and Libya. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Texas Chapter No. 2772, and a distinguished member of the Order of Mighty Mine Dodgers. Survivors include his wife, Marina Farga Guevara; a son, Andres Guevara; a brother, Andy Guevara; a sister, Rosa Guevara; and two grandchildren. A Mass was said Monday at Mothe Funeral Home in Harvey. Burial was in Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, Miss.

James B. McKenzie Jr., a sailor and entrepreneur, died Tuesday of heart failure at his home. He was 68. Mr. McKenzie was born in New Orleans and lived in Montana for 14 years and in Hawaii for 14 years before returning to New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Doyle McKenzie; a son, James B. McKenzie III of Coden, Ala.; five daughters, Jon Nan McKenzie Schenk and Suzanne McKenzie, both of Portland, Ore., Celeste McKenzie Horton of Billings, Mont., Linda McKenzie Smithson of Nashville, Tenn., and Sandra Knapp of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Gaylord Wilson of Biloxi, Miss.; a sister, Faith Peperone of Kenner; and 13 grandchildren. Curtis Burise Jr., a construction worker, died Monday in the 500 block of South Dorgenois Street of a gunshot wound. He was 35. Mr. Burise was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended John McDonogh High School. Survivors include his companion, Shanell Payton; four sons, Donald Burise, Samuel Walker, Curtis Tassin and Curtis Neville; five daughters, Tenara and Phalithia Patin and Breaira, Kiana and Curtnitra Neville; his father, Curtis Burise Sr.; his mother, Sally Burise; two brothers, Burnell Woods of Paradis and Corey Burise; and two sisters, Lisa Burise Davis and Stephanie Burise Broussard. Wilfred Carter, a janitor at Hibernia National Bank in Thibodaux for 24 years, died Sunday of a heart attack at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. He was 56. Mr. Carter was born in Napoleonville and lived in Labadieville for the past 25 years. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Lang Carter; his mother, Irma Holmes Carter of Napoleonville; five brothers, Earl Jr., Herman, Daneial and Louis Carter, all of Napoleonville, and Lloyd Carter of New Orleans; and three sisters, Dorothy Jupiter of New Orleans, Theanell Ausama and Paulette Jupiter of Napoleonville. Deborah Merchant, a homemaker, died March 14 of a heart attack at Baton Rouge General Hospital. She was 52. Ms. Merchant was born in New Orleans, lived in Hammond, Ind., and lived in Baton Rouge for the past 13 years. She graduated from Hammond High School in Hammond, Ind. She was a member of Belfast Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Survivors include a son, Allen Merchant; her mother, Margaret Thomas of New Orleans; five brothers, Joseph Thomas Jr. of Seattle, Willie Merchant III of Birmingham, Michael Merchant, Reginald Merchant and Marvin Thomas; and eight sisters, Althea, Karen and Carla Merchant and Wanda Pendleton, all of Birmingham, and Hortense Merchant, Iris Lewis, Pamela Berhan and Tonya Powell, all of Seattle. John Thomas Rondeno Jr., a financial planner and business owner with J. Thomas Rondeno and Associates, died Thursday of respiratory failure at Lakeland Medical Center. He was 58. Mr. Rondeno was born in Donaldsonville and lived in New Orleans for many years. He was a former employee of Big Easy Rental and the Orleans Parish Civil Sheriff's Office. He had been a member of the Republican State Central Committee. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Alexis Rondeno; four sons, Joshua Thomas, Jonathan Thomas and John A. Rondeno, and Berwyn B. Smith; two daughters, Joan Deneen Rondeno Gaudet and Deidra Rondeno; his mother, Louisa Butler Rondeno; two brothers, Butler J. and Andrew S. Rondeno; five sisters, Elouise R. King, Joan R. Ms. Smith was born in Portland, Ore., and lived in New Orleans for the past 54 years. She was a graduate of George Washington Carver Senior High School. She had worked for BellSouth and was a member of Communications Workers of America Local Union No. 3410. Survivors include her companion, Cornel Butler; two sons, Frederick Smith Jr. and Patrick E. Smith Sr.; two daughters, Pamela Smith Woods and Tamica Gloria Smith; two brothers, Motel Yates and Charles Yates; three sisters, Betty Butler, Mary Shell and Lori Smith; and 17 grandchildren.
