Jesse Joseph Brasset Jr., a retired Jefferson Parish elementary school principal, died Monday of kidney failure at his home. He was 62. Mr. Brasset was born in New Orleans and lived in Gretna for many years. He was a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Mr. Brasset served in the Navy. Survivors include his wife, Linda Burney Brasset; a son, Jesse Joseph Brasset III; two daughters, Michelle Brasset Meche and Susanne Marie Brasset; a sister, Geraldine Brasset Kelley; and a grandchild. A Mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

BARNES, GUSTAVIA BUTLER

Gustavia Butler Barnes, a homemaker, died Thursday of congestive heart failure at St. Claude General Hospital. She was 65. Mrs. Barnes was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She attended John F. Kennedy High School. She was a former employee of the Orleans Parish School Board. She was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, William Barnes; two daughters, Denise and Deborah Barnes of Marrero; a brother, John Butler; three sisters, Evelyn B. Thomas, Gertrude Robinson and Shirley Robertson; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said today at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1835 St. Roch Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Littlejohn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VAUGHN, ROSIE BATES

Rosie Bates Vaughn, a homemaker, died Thursday at Ferncrest Manor. She was 77. Mrs. Vaughn was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include a son, Malcolm Vaughn; a stepson, Curtis Vaughn; a stepdaughter, Margaret Van Buren; a brother, Bernard Bates; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at New Home Full Gospel Church, 1616 Carondelet St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Lockett Federal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SWEATMAN, LORENA WALKER

Lorena Walker Sweatman, a homemaker, died Sunday of heart failure at her home. She was 88. Mrs. Sweatman was born in Farmerville and lived in Slidell for 27 years and in Montgomery, Texas, for the past 1˝ years. Survivors include a son, Ronald Sweatman; three sisters, Mildred Vyermann of Houston and Clarice Boyles and Freda White, both of Farmerville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Honaker Funeral Home in Slidell. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

LUBRANO, BENEDICT ‘BENNY' ANTHONY JR.

Benedict "Benny" Anthony Lubrano Jr., a former insurance agent, died Friday of cancer at his mother's home. He was 58. Mr. Lubrano was born in New Orleans and lived in Chalmette for about 28 years. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl L. Sancho; his father, Benedict A. Lubrano Sr.; his mother, Yvonne Lubrano; five brothers, Raymond C. and Anthony M. Lubrano, and Gillis, Ricky and Ronnie Cure; and three grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road, Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens. St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LEMELLE, ZION ISIAH

Zion Isiah Lemelle died Sunday of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at Lakeland Medical Center. He was 4 months old. He lived in New Orleans. Survivors include his mother, Devin R. Frere; his father, Corey E. Lemelle; his grandfathers, Michael Frere and Wayne Lemelle; and his grandmother, Dezelma Frere. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1923 St. Philip St. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KENNEDY, EDWARD ‘UNC'

Edward "Unc" Kennedy, a retired employee of Union Pacific Railroad, died May 29 of complications from cancer at Stonebridge Convalescent Center in Gretna. He was 75. Mr. Kennedy was born in Napoleonville and lived in Avondale for many years. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Annie Gray; three sons, Durel Edward Allen, Brian Keith Allen and Gabriel Edward Allen; a daughter, Edna Mae Black; a sister, Alice K. Harris; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at Second St. John Baptist Church, 242 Avondale Garden Road, Avondale. Visitation will begin at noon at the church. Burial will be in Ama Cemetery in Ama. Westside Funeral Home handled arrangements.

HUGHES, EMMA

Emma Hughes, a retired self-employed seamstress, died Monday at Covenant Nursing Home. She was 88. Mrs. Hughes was born in Norwood and lived in Los Angeles for many years before moving to New Orleans 25 years ago. Survivors include several cousins. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park, 10400 Old Gentilly Road. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HOWARD, LAKESHIA ANN

Lakeshia Ann Howard, a photo technician, died of a gunshot wound Thursday at Charity Hospital. She was 19. Ms. Howard was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from Alcee Fortier High School and was a member of its Air Force Junior ROTC. Survivors include a son, Corey Antonie Howard; her father, Freddie Cloudy; her mother, Debra Ann Howard; two sisters, Latasha Anthony and Latisha Howard; her grandfather, Nolan Howard Sr.; and her grandmother, Hattie Howard. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 2311 Seventh St. Visitation begins at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Green Street Cemetery. Calvin J. Young Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul M. FitzSimmons, a retired program coordinator for the New Jersey Department of Corrections, died Monday of complications from a stroke at Lacombe Nursing Center. He was 80. Mr. FitzSimmons was born in Calais, Maine, and lived in Mandeville for many years. Survivors include his wife, Joan FitzSimmons; and a son, Philip Flaherty Jr. A private funeral will be held. Mildred Louise Maestri Eckert, a homemaker, died Friday at East Jefferson General Hospital. She was 90. Mrs. Eckert was born in New Orleans and lived in Baton Rouge for 57 years and in Metairie and Mandeville for the past five years. She was member of Our Lady of the Lake Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of America Court Marie Louise No. 6, Baton Rouge. Survivors include a son, Charles E. Eckert of Metairie; a sister, Clara M. Edwards of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Private services where held Monday at L.A. Muhleisen and Sons Funeral Home.

DUFRENE, IRA PAUL

Ira Paul Dufrene, an electrical supervisor with SECO Industries Inc., died Saturday of cancer at his home. He was 54. He was born in Raceland and lived in River Ridge for the past 24 years. He was a former employee of Delta Petroleum Co., and worked at SECO for 12 years. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Sheryl Ann Dufrene; three sons, Shane, Ricky and Ryan Dufrene; a daughter, Nicole Dufrene; three brothers, Warren, John, and Gary Dufrene; a sister, Evelyn Boudreaux; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

Steven Carcioppolo died Saturday of cancer at Hospice House in Cape Coral, Fla. He was 44. Mr. Carcioppolo was born in New Orleans and lived in Cape Coral for the past seven years. He earned a black belt in judo. Survivors include his wife, Lauren Carcioppolo; a son, Alex Carcioppolo; a daughter, Kerri Carcioppolo; his father, Attilio Carcioppolo; his stepmother, Judi Carcioppolo; a brother, Johnny Carcioppolo; two sisters, Roxanne Carcioppolo and Lisa Green; and his stepgrandmother, Shirley Grand. No services will be held.
