Emma Goodson died on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Lane Regional Medical Center. She was 79 years old, a native of Kentwood, and a resident of Jackson. Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Second Baptist Church, Jackson from 10am until service time at 1:00pm. Interment will be in Second Baptist Church Cemetery. She is survived by 3 daughters; Virginia Ann Woodard Freeman of Tylertown, MS, Debbie Goodson Haney of Jackson, and Peggy Joyce Goodson Casanova of Jackson, a son; Paul Davis Hurst of Clinton, a sister; Ruby Smith of Summit, MS, a brother; Donald B. Woodard of Springfield, 9 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; Lanice and Myrtis Woodard, a brother and a sister.
Velma Leigh Willson Boyd
(March 18, 1926 - February 3, 2013)
A resident of Zachary and native of Mount Vernon, Ms., she died Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 at the age of 86, in The Butterfly Wing of Baton Rouge General Medical Center. A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Zachary, she was a retired Registered Nurse whose career spanned five decades, having worked primarily at East Louisiana State Hospital in Jackson and where she retired as the Director of Nurses of the Louisiana War Veterans' Home. She also spent several post-retirement years working at Villa Feliciana Veterans' Hospital. She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Leigh Boyd, of Baton Rouge, Beverly Ann Pearson and husband George, of Metairie, and Laura Beth Palmisano and husband Glen, of Boulder, Co.; her sister, Tommie LaNell Stewart, of Vaughn, Ms.; two brothers, Frank Dale Joe Willson and wife Carolyn, of Texas, and Malcolm "Coon" Willson and wife Kathy, of Mount Vernon, Ms.; four sisters-in-law, Bettye Sue Leeper, Guynell Boyd, Antoinette Willson, and Marlene Willson; six grandchildren, Jon Bryce Magendie, Joseph Silverman, Adrienne Leigh Magendie Zetty, Allison Kate Palmisano, Michael Aaron Palmisano and Ada Marie Palmisano; and five great-grandchildren, Amelia Leigh Zetty, Maxwell Silverman, Jon Nicholas Magendie, Alexander Silverman, and Ian Paul Magendie. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Q. and Alma Leigh Willson; five brothers, including Donald Ray Willson, Pete Willson, and Jim Willson; and by her beloved husband of 62 happy years, Willie B. Columbus Boyd. Visitation is at Charlet Funeral Home in Zachary, on Wednesday, Feb. 6th, from 5-8 p.m. and will continue on Thursday at 9 a.m. until a service at 10 a.m., conducted by Dr. Wayne Barnes. A graveside service will follow at noon at the Stewart Wall Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Ms. Many thanks to the dedicated nursing staff of Zachary Manor Nursing Home, Lane Regional Medical Center, and Baton Rouge General - Mid City, and to Dr. Stephen W. Speeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Baton Rouge, the Alzheimer's Association, or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

A resident of Slaughter, she died Sunday, October 14, 2012. She was 74 years old. Visiting will be at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc. in Zachary on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012 from 5pm until 8pm. On Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 at Slaughter First Baptist Church from 9am until service at 10am conducted by Rev. Basil Wicker. Burial will be in Resthaven Garden of Memories, Baton Rouge. She is survived by her children, Brenda W. Hewes and husband, Jeffrey; Willie J. Wisner, Jr and wife, Mary; Donna Gordy and husband Phillip and Dana Tucker. Sisters, Louise King; Edna Stewart; Ella Flowers, Jinnie Wells and husband, Mike; Brothers, Ishmal Smith, Jimmy Smith and wife Beverly; Bob Smith and wife Easter, Jack Wilson Smith and wife Ealine. Carpenter, Glancy "Judge" Lee, 95, died on Monday October 15, 2012 at his home in Central, LA. He was a retired pipefitter from Exxon Refinery. Visiting will all be at Blackwater United Methodist Church, Central, on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Friday from 12noon until service time at 1:30 pm. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his son, Tommy Lance Carpenter; sister, May Chemin; brother, Milton Carpenter; grandson, Edward Lee Carpenter; three great grandchildren, Tara Carpenter Sturgen and husband Daniel, Lesleigh Carpenter and Katie Carpenter and one great great grandchild, Ian Sturgen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Lizzie "Kit" Dyer Carpenter; one brother, Tomcat Carpenter and one sister, Aritta Carpenter Devall.
Miriam Joan Scales Garrett

Garrett, Miriam Scales, a Garrett, Miriam Scales, a resident of St. Francisville, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harvey Alfred Garrett, and parents Leola Goodman Scales and Walter Howard Scales. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Garrett Sins and husband George F. Sins, Jr., Betty Garrett Sessions and husband Charles Sessions, Lynn Garrett Zinn and husband Marshall Zinn, and Susan Garrett Davis and husband Donny Davis. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Stacy Sins Ingram and husband John Ingram, George Sins, III and wife Amy Sins, Katherine Sins Leblanc and husband Lauren Leblanc, Garrett Sessions and wife Angela Sessions, John King Sessions and wife Mollie Sessions, Robert Corban Sessions, Anna Addison Davis and Benjamin Garrett Davis, and by her great-grandchildren, Christopher, Caroline, Madeline, Miller, Sarah, Elizabeth and David. She was born in Buffalo, New York, and lived in Peoria, Illinois, Winter Park, Florida, and Dallas, Texas before moving to New Orleans at age 11. After graduating from high school in New Orleans, she attended Sophie Newcomb College and graduated from LSU with a Bachelors degree in Art. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and served on as Senior Warden and on the Altar Guild. She was a founding member of the West Feliciana Historical Society, an Audubon Pilgrimage Chairman, member of the Feliciana Gardeners, and a Girl Scout leader. Miriam relished living in the same community for most of her adult life, surrounded by family and friends with whom she shared her bountiful love of people and life. Visitation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 20, from 9:30 am until 11 am, with a service following. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandson-in-law. The family would like to thank Claudette Ashworth and Jeannie Buckles for their devoted care of our mother for the past two years. Beryl Lorraine Byers Benham born March 22, 1933 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She passed away October 16, 2012 at her home in Baker, LA. She was preceded in death by her father Art Byers, her mother Lyla Hanke Byers, and brother Keith Byers of Vancouver BC, Canada. Beryl is survived by her husband of 55 years Reid C. Benham and four children; James Benham, Bruce & wife Laura Benham, Christina & husband David Godso, and Gary Benham. Beryl had four grandchildren; Jason & wife Stacey Godso, Michelle & husband Tarlton Gleason, Cameron & John Benham. She also had a great grandchild Christian Gleason. During her life, Beryl was a parachute folder in the Royal Canadian Air Force, a west coast house wife, a southern realtor and northeast fan of the “loons”, but she was always the anchor of the family. She loved to travel, arranging cruises, and traveling to the northwest. We will all miss her love and guidance.

A resident of Jackson, he died Thursday, January 24, 2013 at LA War Vets Home. He was 92 years old and was retired from Villa Feliciana. Visiting will be at Bluff Creek Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 12pm until service at 2pm conducted by Rev. Harold Babin and Rev. Ron Lowery. Burial will be in Naul Family Cemetery, Clinton. He is survived by his children, Shelia S. Entremont; Franklin C. Smith and wife, Linda Diane; and George Michael "Mike" Smith and wife, Lisa. 4 grandchildren, Mauri Collier, Angela Entremont, Tara Smith DeLee, and Lydia Rose Smith. 3 great grandchildren, Gage Wilkinson, Courtney Taylor, and Gabriel Collier. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Florence Hard Smith; a grandson, Franklin Clay Smith, Jr.; a great grandchild, Christian Collier. 12 brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Lyman Fleniken, Jr., Maurice Entremont, Gage Wilkinson, Ronald Nelson, Chet DeLee, Bubba McCrory and Gabriel Collier. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Alvin Hall and Rev. Darwin Hall. He was a former deacon at Bluff Creek Baptist Church and a member of Carpenters Local 1098. He was a longtime member of Wilson Community Church.
