Velma Walker Turegano, a retired bookkeeper, died Tuesday at Huntington Place Nursing Home. She was 86. Mrs. Turegano was born in Gray and lived in Poydras for the past 18 years. Survivors include two sons, Donald Joseph and John Eugene Turegano Jr.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis cemetery No. 3.

Mary Jane Blackwell Myres, a retired licensed practical nurse with Forest Manor, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at her home. She was 71. Mrs. Myres was born in Blond and lived in Covington. She graduated from Covington High School and had an associate's degree from Louisiana Technical College in Bogalusa. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include two brothers, Robert and Oscar Blackwell. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at Schoen Funeral Home of Covington, 1414 S. Tyler St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in New Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Gwendolyn Elizabeth Robinson Johnson Willis, a church musician, died Friday of complications from a stroke and diabetes at Meadowcrest Hospital. She was 56. Mrs. Willis was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from McDonogh No. 35 High School and attended Southern University at New Orleans. She worked as minister of music at Austerlitz Street Baptist Church, assistant minister of music for the Cornerstone General Baptist Association and music coordinator at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and its National Finance Committee. Survivors include a son, Edward C. Johnson; her mother, Anna B. Robinson; two brothers, Timothy M. Robinson and Hilliard Buckner; a sister, Marva D. LeBeau; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Austerlitz Street Baptist Church, 819 Austerlitz St. A musical tribute will be presented today at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Visitation is today from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 7 to 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Gaskin-Southhall Gordon & Gordon Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Joseph James Swanton, a retired maintenance supervisor for Otis Elevator Co., died Friday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Swanton was born in New Orleans and was a lifelong resident of Metairie. He had worked at Otis for 40 years and formerly worked as a counter clerk for Western Auto. He was a cardiac rehabilitation volunteer at East Jefferson General Hospital for the past 11 years and was named volunteer of the month in October 2001. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Voitier Swanton; a daughter, Jo Ann Swanton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A private service and burial were held Tuesday at Lake Lawn Park. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ann Cheever, a homemaker, died Wednesday at Belle Maison Nursing Home. She was 75. Ms. Cheever was born in Union Town, Ala., and lived in Ponchatoula. She worked for the Tangipahoa Parish Food Pantry. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Russo of Slidell, Jacqueline Mutz of Lacombe and Catherine Cheever of Denver; two brothers, Robert DeLoach of Anniston, Ala., and Donald DeLoach of Union Springs, Ala.; a sister, Cecil Ellen Etheridge of Attala, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Fern R. Traugott, a retired secretary for the University of New Orleans, died Nov. 12 at Health Care Center of Good Samaritan Campus in Hot Springs Village, Ark. She was 87. Mr. Traugott was born in Fairmont, Okla., and lived in New Orleans for 34 years and in Hot Springs Village for the past 19 years. Survivors include a son, Robert Traugott of Lafayette; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchilden. A funeral was held Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hot Springs Village. A graveside service was held Friday in Memorial Park cemetery in Enid, Okla. Memorial Park cemetery handled arrangements.

Guy "Zee" Lynn Buras, a commercial fisherman, died Monday at Plaquemines Parish Medical Center in Port Sulphur of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 44. Mr. Buras was a lifelong resident of Venice. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Dugar Buras; a son, Joshua Buras; two daughters, Trish and Zena Buras; his father, Elwood Buras Sr.; a sister, Priscilla B. Smith; and a grandchild. He was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and its deacon board, male chorus, Sick Committee and Pastor Support Club. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Mims was born in New Orleans and lived in Kenner for 24 years. He graduated from the University of New Orleans. He was a member of the St. Angela Merici Men's Association and former leader of Boy Scout Troop No. 45.
