Gant; and many special nephews, nieces, and friends. John was a devoted husband and father, who had an enduring love for his family, but the great love of his life was music -- particularly band music. As a hobby and an avocation he performed in bands and orchestras during most of his life, and enjoyed listening to others perform. Many Shreveporters will remember him as a performer and announcer for the Centenary-Shreveport Summer Band concerts. He also enjoyed playing for a number of years in the Shreveport German Band. Additionally, he was one of the principal organizers and promoters of the Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band and continued to play baritone horn in that band until the onset of his final illness. He was educated in Shreveport public schools and at LSU in Baton Rouge, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946, a master of arts degree in 1950, and a juris doctor degree in 1951. He began the practice of law in Shreveport in 1951. Outstanding among his character traits was a strong commitment to honor, and he applied that commitment to both his personal and professional conduct. In his professional capacity as an attorney-at-law he had a profound sense of responsibility for the welfare of those persons whom he counseled and represented, and as his law practice developed and grew he had many friends who became his clients and many clients who became his friends. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pursuant to his wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial eulogy and Rite for the Burial of the Dead will be celebrated at The Church of the Holy Cross Episcopal, 875 Cotton Street, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, Shreveport, at 1 p.m., to be followed by a Service of Committal in Forest Park Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Avenue. Pallbearers will be Dan Sawyer, Edward O. Kernaghan, Gerald W. Hawkins, W.H. Causey, Jr., W. Joseph Allen and Paul D. Oberle, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band, 1910 Shady Grove Drive, Bossier City, LA 71112, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
