A retired comptroller of Barber Bros. Contracting Co. Inc., he died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 78 and a native of West Plains, Mo. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bobbie Maupin Toney; a brother, Dr. William Toney of Farmington, N.M.; four sons, Mark Holmes Toney of Baton Rouge and wife, Daphne, Dr. Lee Egbert Toney, III of Knoxville, Tenn., and wife, Leslie, Gregory Ashby Toney of Baton Rouge and wife, Kelly, and Randall Pettit Toney of Baton Rouge and wife, Donna; a former daughter-in-law, Celeste Peak Toney; eight grandchildren, Melissa Toney Asevedo and husband, Kyle of Baton Rouge, Katherine Celeste Toney of Portland, Ore., Lauren Kay Toney of Ann Arbor, Mich., Diana Leigh Toney of Knoxville, Douglas Lee Toney of Knoxville, Matthew Hardin Toney of Baton Rouge, Colin Ashby Toney of Baton Rouge and Claire Elise Toney of Baton Rouge; a step-grandchild, Ashley Cowart of Baton Rouge; and a great-grandchild, Grace Katherine Asevedo. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Lee Egbert Toney, and mother, Jennie Holmes Toney; two sisters, Jeannette Toney File and Reba Toney Aid; and a brother, George Ashby Toney. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he attended the University of California at Los Angeles and Harvard Business School after being chosen for the Navy V-12 program and serving as the supply officer on the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. He was a loving member of the United Methodist Church and served in numerous leadership capacities, including chairman of the board and chairman of the council of ministries at Ingleside United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school for more than 30 years and also served as a lay preacher, having earned his preaching license in 196l. He was a member of University United Methodist Church, where he was active in the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class. He served as president of the Pollard Estates Civic Association. After retirement, he was an active United Way volunteer and volunteered for F.I.S.H. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of University United Methodist Church.

She was a member and secretary of St. Paul No. 1 Baptist Church, a 1962 graduate of West High School and she received her Bachelor and Master degrees from Southern University. She was a co-instructor of AARP 55 Alive safety class. She was a willing worker at St. Chapel Baptist Church in Tylertown, Miss., and was the founder and president of Crafts and Fellowship Club of Gloster.

He was the beloved husband of Mary Theo Webb Babin, whom he preceded in death by one day. He died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 80 years old, born on Jan. 28, 1922, a native of the Bluff Settlement near Dutchtown and a resident of Oak Grove community in Ascension Parish. Survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Mary Theo Webb Babin; three daughters, Judy Pauline Babin Cook, Agnes Vianne "Toni" Babin Haydel and Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Babin deVeer; two sons, Ira Paul Babin, II and Timothy Lee Babin; three sons-in-law, Leroy Cook, James "Nick" Haydel and Roy deVeer; grandsons, Bret Cook, Paul Cook, Dennis Cook, Kurt Cook, Murphy Haydel, Michael deVeer, David deVeer and Joey deVeer; granddaughters, Tathia Haydel Lambert, Danielle Haydel Twiner and Alisca Haydel; 15 great-grandchildren, Adam, Taylor, Andrew, Sean, Seth, Brennen and Blair Cook, Linsdé and Logan Lambert, Morgan Laiche, Yancy Hebert, Blake deVeer, Ty Smith and Katie and Kassie deVeer. He was of the Roman Catholic faith, attended Dutchtown High School and was retired from Borden Co. and the Ascension Parish School Board. He was also a cattleman and farmer. She was 78 years old, born on Aug. 19, 1924, and a lifelong resident of Oak Grove community in Ascension Parish. Survived by three daughters, Judy Pauline Babin Cook, Agnes Vianne "Toni" Babin Haydel and Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Babin deVeer; two sons, Ira Paul Babin, II and Timothy Lee Babin; three sons-in-law, Leroy Cook, James "Nick" Haydel and Roy deVeer; grandsons, Bret Cook, Paul Cook, Dennis Cook, Kurt Cook, Murphy Haydel, Michael deVeer, David deVeer and Joey deVeer; granddaughters, Tathia Haydel Lambert, Danielle Haydel Twiner and Alisca Haydel; and 15 great-grandchildren, Adam, Taylor, Andrew, Sean, Seth and Brennen and Blair Cook, Linsdé and Logan Lambert, Morgan Laiche, Yancy Hebert, Blake deVeer, Ty Smith and Katie and Kassie deVeer. BARBO, JAMES C.
In loving memory of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. Jim died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, peacefully at home surrounded by his family, friends and angels. He was born Aug. 6, 1920, and celebrated his 82nd birthday "camping out" with all of his family. He lived his life to the fullest up to the last moment; death never took him, when the time was right he gladly gave himself unto the Lord. The one thing Jim missed most was tending his garden.
