A secretary at Melville High School for more than 22 years, she died at 6:59 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Lafayette General Hospital. She was 78 and a resident of Melville. She and her husband owned and operated Buckhorn Cafe in Lottie for many years. Visiting at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home, Melville, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Religious service at St. John Catholic Church, Melville, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Joe Padinjarepeedika, the Rev. Mr. Carlo Cannatella and the Rev. Robert Courville. She is survived by a son, Marshall Savage, III of St. Francisville; four daughters, Cathie Savage and Christie Savage, both of Grand Coteau, Jennifer Ziegler of Lafayette and Dorothea Holley of Clinton; three brothers, Pete Cannatella of Melville, Frank Cannatella of Port Neches, Texas, and the Rev. Mr. Carlo A. Cannatella of Opelousas; four sisters, Katie Vachiere of Melville, Elizabeth Onnebane of Lafayette, Rosie Cannatella of Melville and Martha Burt of Marble Falls, Texas; nine grandchildren, Tony Kaiser, Shannon Lawton, Marsha Day, Tommy Savage, Kimberly Ziegler, Rachel Ziegler, Emma Holley, Brandon Achord and Kathryn Achord; and two great-grandchildren, Marshall Cole Lawton and Marsha Ann Savage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Savage, Jr.; a daughter, Kim Celeste Savage; a brother, Joseph Cannatella; a sister, Jennie Cannatella; and her parents, Charles Cannatella and Mathilde Gulino. The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association.

A retired welder at Avondale Shipyards and a resident of St. James, he died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday June 15, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans. He was 62 and a native of Vacherie. STRINGER, DR. L.E.
Coroner for St. Helena Parish for 36 years and a longtime resident of Greensburg, he died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at his home with his family by his side. He was 69 and a native of Bassfield, Miss. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a graduate of Bassfield High School and the University of Mississippi Medical School. He was a well-known fixture in St. Helena Parish and was best known for his medical practice. In 1966, he opened the newly built St. Helena Parish Hospital and served as chief of staff for 15 years. Aside from his thriving medical practice, he was also very passionate when it came to the humane and ethical treatment of animals, so he founded The Parish Animal Adoption Society, P.A.W.S. He was also the founder of St. Helena Citizens for Good Government Inc. A memorial service will be held at Greensburg First Baptist Church, Greensburg, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A self-employed carpenter and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, in Baton Rouge. He was 19 and a native of Lafayette. A priest in the Episcopal Church, the fourth rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, former rector of St. Columb's Episcopal Church in Jackson, Miss., and former rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Abbeville, he died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at his residence in Baton Rouge. He was 49. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a helicopter pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross first oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with the V device, Bronze Star, awarded the Purple Heart three times and the Honor Medal of the Republic of South Vietnam. Interment was in the Fort Towson, Okla., cemetery. A retired public and private school teacher, Bertha Wilson died at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, June 12, 2002. She was born Nov. 8, 1906, at Warner, Indian Territory, Okla. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, June and Gene Pizzolato and Mary and Cecil Bell of Baker; one sister, Ruby Vincent, Aragon, Ga.; and one brother, Earl Rogers, Hugo. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lynda Canezaro and Gina Milton, both of Baker, Lisa Schultz of Port Allen; 14 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Harlon Wilson; her father, Jess S. Rogers; her mother, Susan Elizabeth Rogers; a brother, Samuel J. Rogers; a granddaughter, Dianna Sue Bell Guidry; and a grandson, Kenneth Harlon Bell. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge.
