Charles Edward Ragus

DALLAS, TX - Charles Edward Ragus of Dallas, was called home by his Father on June 1, 2001. Born October 6, 1942 in Columbus, Miss., the only child of Lyman and Narvis Ragus spent his early years in Shreveport, where the family moved when he was a child. After graduating from Fair Park High School there in 1960, he went to Northwestern State University in Louisiana on an athletic scholarship. During his junior year, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Ursery, in 1962 and graduated with a business degree in 1965. After college, he played briefly for the Kansas City Chiefs, before beginning a career with Fidelity Union Insurance Company, where, by the age of 27, he had become a regional vice president. After a period of time in real estate and working with a family retail business, Charlie, as his friends and colleagues called him, found his true calling in direct sales. Joining Herbalife in 1983, he became one of the company's top distributors. In 1989, he founded a company called Omnitrition, but sold out a few years later to retire. It was like trying to "retire" a racehorse, and he was back in 1993 with a new idea: He was determined to set a new standard for professionalism in the direct-sales industry and offer leading-edge nutritional products. He created AdvoCare International, so named because, he told distributors, "I am an advocate who cares for you." Since the company's inception, it has grown from two products and one distributorship to some 75 products, 100,000 distributors from Hawaii to Maine, and a corporate staff of 125 in Carrollton, Texas. Four years in a row, Charlie's dream company has earned the coveted Dallas 100 Award, given by the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business Caruth Institute, to the 100 fastest-growing, privately held companies in North Texas. AdvoCare was a finalist for the Direct Selling Association's 2001 Education for Life Award for its innovative debt-reduction program. Charlie was a finalist for the regional Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000 and is a finalist again in 2001. Before he died, Charlie said, "I didn't get into this business to be a vitamin salesman. I got into this business to change lives." Toward that end, he brought a level of stewardship and integrity to his work that inspired the devotion of thousands. Truly, he touched and changed many lives.
He is preceded in death by his father-in-law, Thomas Ursery. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Peggy Ragus of Dallas; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Buddy Cook of Shreveport, LA, Stacey and Lt. Col. Andy Cernicky of Whiteman AFB in Missouri, and Jenni and Dalton McGaha of Plano, Texas; parents Lyman and Narvis Ragus of Shreveport,LA; mother-in-law Ione Ursery of Elm Grove, LA; and six grandchildren, Alex, Kelsey and Courtney Cook and Andrew, Caitlin and Nicholas Cernicky.
The family will receive family and friends between 5 and 9 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Sparkman/Dickey Funeral Home, 17501 Dallas Parkway, Dallas. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Prestonwood Baptist Church, 6801 W. Park Blvd., Plano, with Dr. Jack Graham and Rev. Neal Jeffrey officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport, LA, with Rev. Bill Crosby and Rev. Rick Loy officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Centuries Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road in Shreveport.
Memorial may be made to The Victory Juction Gang Camp in Honor of Adam Petty, mail gifts to Advocare International, 2727 Realty Road, #134, Carrollton, TX 75006, Attn: Memorials.
